  • Markus Babbel Is New Wanderers Coach

    mack

Western Sydney Wanderers have appointed Markus Babbel, confirming the new manager at a press conference this afternoon.

The former FC Luzern club manager will replace Josep Gombau, who was sacked by the club after finishing 7th in the 2017/18 A-League regular season.

Markus Babbel, 45, is one of the most high profile coaching appointments in the history of the A-League, having played 51 times for the German National team, with a glittering playing career that included winning the Bundesliga and UEFA Cup with Bayern Munich, the FA Cup & UEFA Cup again with Liverpool and the 1996 European Championship with Germany.

His coaching career took him to Stuttgart and then to Hertha Berlin, where he won the German 2nd Division title in 2010/11. His most recently appointment was at FC Luzern in Switzerland where he stablised the club back into the top half of the competition before leaving due mid-season after he decided to not renew his contract.

Babbel spoke at the press conference about wanting a new challenge at the club, "It wasn't a difficult decision to come to the Wanderers, I am looking forward to the challenge". Tomi Juric was mentioned as having sold the club to Babbel, comparing Wanderers supported with the much quieter people of Switzerland. Babell will return to Europe for a brief holiday with his family, before returning to take on the role heading into the pre-season.

And as I said they are all playing in Europe now they were so good

there is an abundance of talented youngsters across world football and only a small amount mature into regular first teamers

the way you should look at this is how many of the young players left our club have excelled and kicked on? I ask because I really can’t say any...

i know if you look at our neighbour in the east over the years players like Djite, Burns, Arzani were in esfc youth teams and weren’t given a chance and went on and had careers or in arzani look destined to do so

there were big wraps on banderia and shadow for example time will tell if letting them guy will bite us

taurus is probably best placed to comment if any players we don’t know has kicked on elsewhere

You must remember when popa was here there wasn't an academy it just started just before he left. What he had was a few young players from that state leagues. Gombau and Babbel have the youth academy so they have to use it. Baccus, Grozos, Tockich are the first ones

    Erebus, stop upsetting people :-)

Team PopaOut had been demanding Popa's head for at least a year, and consequently they had to turn into GombauIn as soon as Popa was out of the door. Gombau had to be successful so their PopaOut mantra would be substantiated. But alas! Gombau didn't turn out to be the manager the club thought they'd signed. GombauIn never saw him as the fraud he is, or looked at him as part (or the root) of the problem. Instead: It's not his team, he didn't have a pre season, individual players are crap, the whole team is crap, the club is crap etc.

They now hope for two things: that the Babbel boys don't make the top six, and that Popa's Glory ends up behind the Wanderers = told you so! = Popa is crap + Gombau >> Babbel. Something like that.

They totally ignore that there is a revolution on the way at WSW. We've seen the first glimpse of it in Wellington: a BL1 grade training regime with high fitness level promoting youth players that translates into purposeful possession and passing, physical presence, a variable game plan, young players starting to make an impact, less stupid errors at the back, more clinical up front.

What GombauIn is also ignoring is that our new coach is a pro. He showed his emotions during the derby, demonstrated to both team and supporters who he is and what he stands for. Then he accepted his red card. He defended both his opinion and the refs and VAR. Going by FFA's reaction, and Gillet's performance in Wellington, his critique was heard. His voice has weight.

I said it in May when he was announced: he will transform our club.

Markus shouldn't you be preparing for our game this afternoon? :P

you think every player playing in europe is good? did you craft this theory of yours when you were a diehard sydney fc fan?

also for the record i was never team popa out, he made a lot of **** signings but he usually made them work

No but I’m still yet to hear you convince of players that were so good that didn’t get a chance under popa because I don’t agree with you opinion doesn’t make either of us right or wrong

and now you are talking about being a die hard esfc fan so I don’t know if for some reason because I opened debate with you for some reason your stress levels have raised

In summary relax your flaps and if you don’t want to discuss things then maybe think before you post

Video interview of Babbel with kicker sports mag. The gist:

Q: how did you end up in Sydney?

Was looking for a challenge, for something different
Fantastic challenge as manager, but also as a person
It couldn’t be better, having unbelievable fun
Have a top job, live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world
Living a dream right now, family loves it

    Q: what’s different down under?
Australian have a different approach to life
Unbelievable multiculturalism, live and let live attitude which he loves
Club wants to get back on top and is juggling a number of big projects
With opening of training facility in two months there will be a European standard
In six months new stadium with European quality will be open
Singing the high praises of coaching group, both professionally and personally competent; loves the multicultural makeup (goalkeeper coach is Italian, assistant coach born in Mauritius, conditioning coach from Brazil, U23 coach with Greek roots, only video analysts is a true blue Aussie)

Q: how is the professionalism compared with Europe?
Like Europe, but the most modern he’s experienced so far
A big focus on high tech, the technology that is part of his job at WSW (video analysis, statistics) is of a quality that he hasn’t experienced before as a coach
Is here at WSW to correct things that didn’t go right
Wants to be in a position next year to attack and have a realistic chance to win the title

Q: what is the standing of football in society
AFL is top, then rugby league (even though they have less spectators than football)
10,000 of our fans were missing at the derby because they are saying “we don’t give our money to the cross town rival”

Q: what is the quality of HAL?
    Can’t compare HAL with BL
Our five imports have good quality and could play in BL
Behind them is a gap of sorts, makes reference to 12 senior and 11 junior players
His task is to bring the young players to the next level which "unfortunately" won’t happen from one day to the next
Club needs to be patient, coaches need to be patient
Compares HAL with Swiss Super League

They then were half-jokingly talking about Bayern’s current problems, and if Babbel could be the solution.
He said: “I can’t imagine what would need to happen for me to leave Sydney right now. I am staying here.”

I hope he doesn't get too bloody comfortable.

MB is quite clear about what the challenges are as far as youth development (18:00-19:00) is concerned, and what skill level he inherited (21:00-22:00).

    https://player.whooshkaa.com/episode?id=287433

He was signed to do a job, to win games from the first match with the squad he inherited. Not to make excuses about the quality of kids who are outside the first 11. It's not like the other clubs in the A-League have magical teams full of kids.

Gombau was already being called "a fraud" after 5 games, here we have Babbel after 9 games (with one clean sheet, an inability to control games against inferior opposition and inconsistent shooting) and we seem to be getting excuses about what he (or his supporters) promised we would get, which is winning games with the squad we had from day one.

Very fair assessment Mack and I don’t disagree

but I would rather have the problems we have now than last years problems

this year and particularly of Friday night I saw a team united and given their hearts trying to get a goal

last season I saw in the 2nd half the of the season more or less disinterest

If we keep piling up losses and mediocre draws, players will turn on each other & politck with the staff as they fight for new contracts. We don't have a huge amount of players on long contracts.

Football is a results driven business. Perform or perish

Whilst this is true, smart owners can see if a squad is making progress behind the scenes. We should NEVER become one of those clubs that sacks a guy for just one season of dodgy results. Arnie missed the finals on his second year at Sydney!

However, if the results aren’t good AND the owners see no progress behind the scenes, then, sure, fire away.

There have been many times I’ve questioned them, but I’d say Babbel instead of Gombau is a smart move.

Babbel can't make them hit the woodwork instead of into the net.

Babbel didn't expect have Baccus Snr to have a hissy fit. And we don't have a quality DM/CM that is on the same level as our European imports.

He hasn't had Ziegler for the opening 5 rounds. I don't understand how Martin Boyle got his passport so quickly but Ziegler hasn't.

Baumjohann I don't think is fully fit.

Boyle applied for his citizenship confirmation papers in March, and once he had them the passport would only take ~3 weeks. Ziggy signed for WSW in late June, even if he applied immediately he's still not waited as long as Boyle has.
