  • New Parramatta Stadium Revealed

    mack

The winning design for the new Western Sydney Wanderers stadium at Parramatta was revealed today by the NSW Government.

As work begins on the demolition of the new stadium, the 2019 stadium design has been unveiled. With numerous bidders for the work, the Government selected a joint bid between builders Lend Lease, and designer Populous.

Populous are well known in Australia & Asia, having designed the Sydney Olympic Stadium that the Western Sydney Wanderers are currently playing in, as well as stadiums on the Gold Coast, in Melbourne & New Zealand.

Unlike many other stadiums built in Australia, this is a purpose built rectangular stadium, and will have the steepest viewing angles in the country. There will be a single tier home end, while the main grandstand will be built with premium corporate hospital suites.

The new stadium if completed as designed looks like it will be the premier medium sized stadium in the country, and leaving all but a handful of stadiums in the dust. It is expected to be finished in 2019.

Surely part of it has to be that its the government that is building these stadiums. Wouldn't that mean, as much as possible, they would try to keep as much of the building work as they can within Australia. High wages in this country means it will always cost a lot more.

Labour costs are a big factor from my understanding. I agree with Dan that the government factor plays a big role, not just in cost but timeframes as well cause they **** around so much with any infrastructure project in this country. They seem so much more efficient in general overseas.

Most of the stadiums we look at as comparisons/appreciation are private projects. I think our costs would still be higher but I think it would be a much different story if we actually had privately built stadia.

Don't forget either that our stadiums are multi use so there's so much bullshit that goes into them to appease the various stakeholders that adds cost and time.

The first point that Cockerill needs to know is that a stadium doesn't equal a stadium.  The second point he needs to know is that a stadium in one part of a country does not equal a stadium in another part of a country.  Thirdly he needs to know that a stadium in one country does not equal a stadium in another country.  Finally he needs to know that a stadium built in one year does not equal a stadium built in another year.  Once he understands all that and the myriad factors that interact within a stadium project he will understand why the differences in cost per seat exist and hopefully he will stop writing nonsense.

A mate of mine works for the council and he says a rare and endangered bird has been found nesting in the eaves of the stadium. The lesser spotted dustbin diver or similar Could hold up construction allegedly

Can someone explain to me why this would hold this up?

Can't it just be moved into the park? Now that Parramatta stadium hardly gets used, probably thought it was a great little place to set up shop!

I could be wrong but I'm fairly sure that was a joke...

Are you sure Dan Butler

How about we move the nest into a zoo type enclosure so we can get on the with the stadium? Yeh yeh endangered species I know but surely we aren't going to hold up a $300m stadium for this?

Before you know it, there will be around the clock bird watchers surveillance (probably cost a fortune too) to make sure the birds don't disappear :ninja:

I've got some stories about how my Nonno dealt with birds that went anywhere near his garden

Flytox, if you wouldn't mind could you elaborate? I understand your point above about inflation and differing costs depending on access to materials. But factoring all that in, doesn't Cockerill still have a point. Is there systemic problem within the Construction industry? I've often wondered if there was a cartel like behaviour between the big construction companies.

I would've thought stadium construction around the world would make a really good case study in benchmarking costs in a similar manner as The Economist magazine uses Big Mac burgers to measure purchasing power across countries

I too, also thought it was a joke.

Never mind, If somehow remotely true, I'm sure Hawks, clearly a bird lover due to his forum name, could solve this problem very quickly.

Nothing that an air rifle couldn't fix very quickly.

Mate works for a tier 1 builder. Said that profit margins on stadiums are much less than on most other large commercial builds.

Main reasons are that stadiums are all different and have site/project specific requirements, where's other builds are cookie cutter designs. Also longer DLP periods than standard build.
