  • New Parramatta Stadium Revealed

    mack

The winning design for the new Western Sydney Wanderers stadium at Parramatta was revealed today by the NSW Government.

As work begins on the demolition of the new stadium, the 2019 stadium design has been unveiled. With numerous bidders for the work, the Government selected a joint bid between builders Lend Lease, and designer Populous.

Populous are well known in Australia & Asia, having designed the Sydney Olympic Stadium that the Western Sydney Wanderers are currently playing in, as well as stadiums on the Gold Coast, in Melbourne & New Zealand.

Unlike many other stadiums built in Australia, this is a purpose built rectangular stadium, and will have the steepest viewing angles in the country. There will be a single tier home end, while the main grandstand will be built with premium corporate hospital suites.

The new stadium if completed as designed looks like it will be the premier medium sized stadium in the country, and leaving all but a handful of stadiums in the dust. It is expected to be finished in 2019.

Lend Lease has a good record at building things pretty quickly. So there will be no mucking around once construction starts.

Also, the current Baird Govt are really pushing hard all the infrastructure upgrades before the next state election.

They are actually going gangbusters atm.

I reckon they'll actually have this finished in the time frame.

There's info on LU that Lend Lease take over Pirtek on the 1st January.

If true, that's actually great news tbh.

    On LU?

    Rugby League forum.

Isn't that normal for the builder to temporarily own the site during construction?

^^^  I'm waiting for the comment from a person who will remain nameless at this time that the  artistic renderings are rubbish compared to photo-renderings.  ;)

It's amazing/sad/baffling to me how little people understand the importance of a locale on a sporting team. There is waaaay more to the identity of a team than the inside of a stadium. Sure that's important on many levels but the walk to the ground and what is encountered there is just as important. Wasteland stadia are shite.

It's because they are not football supporters. They think that we are like the fans of other codes...Go to the match and go home. For most of us match day is just that a DAY where you go meet up with fellow supporters eat/drink, go to the match support your team and show your local pride. Afterwards you go and have a feed/drinks. You take the before and after (as is the case at Homebush) and you're left with nothing.

Article about the landscape architecture firm that has been involved in the design of the outdoor areas of the new stadium at Parramatta.

A little more detail about project and what is proposed for the outdoor areas of the stadium from the company website.

Its funny. What resonates the most with me is when i sit in my usually White and Black section nowadays, i think to my self, "where are all our fans". There was identity in all sections of Pirtek stadium. But i felt the white and black section really bounced off with the RBB. We got involved as much as we could, we all sang, we all knew the songs. Now i look around myself and people dont know ****...

Its early days and time will tell.

But when we go back to Parra, its going to be a glorious day!

100%. Thing is I think we overestimate how many people think like this. Or, at least, realise this.

NRL & AFL used to be like that.

Then AFL decided to move everyone to the MCG & Etihad, and the NRL decided to move everyone to the SFS & ANZ, and do whatever they can to kill the suburban grounds the clubs used to play at.

Similar deal with Arsenal's move to Emirates stadium; the atmosphere wasn't good at Highbury either but it was home. I wonder what the long-term consequences will be, perhaps the casuals will keep coming as with the profits; this becomes the new football or football clubs lose their identity and eventually even the casuals become turned off.   While we wish the league was bigger, we mustn't go down the route of NRL/AFL even if it means the football stays smaller. As long as we have identity, culture and atmosphere.

I guess the main thing in the short-term is getting the club to fix the matchday experience at SOP. Long-term we will be fine, we move back to Parra and we get our home back bigger and better than ever but the current situation is harming us for the time-being.

Maybe in the future when they shove 250000 new people/units/studios/whatever in homebush, we might get more food and alcohol outlets. It may help.

By then we'll be back at Parra and all the variety we can handle anyway (like the good old days)

Even if ANZ gets redeveloped to an excellent high angle 75000 capacity roofed rectangular stadium, once you're outside in the open it's still a concrete wasteland

It will be a packed residential area without anywhere near enough commercial space.

23,500 residents in 10,700 dwellings by 2030 (up from 14,000 residents in 6,000 dwellings)

34,000 workers and 5,000 students by 2030 (up from 31,500 workers and 5,000 students)

Sounds like plenty of commercial space to me.

Besides, by just injecting 20000 residents into the precinct would liven the joint up. More restaurants/bars etc... Maybe even a nightlife! :)

Immediately over the road from the stadium is the Carter St Activation precinct that will include 11,000 population and a 12,000 sq m retail and services area as well as a large commercial area adjacent to the M4.  None of this is part of the SOP precinct.

SOP is just a huge, open space. It's a real-life Sim City. I can't see the situation improving significantly during our stay there.

    It won't.

These plans are long term up to 2030.

    But Mack is wrong.

There area WILL change and revitalise.

It just takes an injection of population and workers.

Currently, bugger all people live there, which is why the place was a ghost town on new years day. It made it worse being a public holiday.
