  • Popovic In

    mack

Tony Popovic has been announced as the inaugural coach of the Western Sydney team.

Having quit his role as Assistant of Crystal Palace, he has been in talks with both Sydney clubs in recent weeks. He has signed with the Western Sydney team to take the helm in it's first season.

Half the teams next season will have new coaches and are re-assembling their squads. This could work in Popa's favour...hopefully. He won't be playing too much catchup because half the league is in the same boat essentially.

I was thinking this the other day. Granted they all have squads at the moments, but it's not like we're a new team thats coming into a comp full of teams with mad chemistry between them and stuff.

Brisbane and CCM yup, not many changes. Perth seem to be rather stable and are adding to their squad. Adelaide appears same.

But both Melbournes and Sydneys are all over the place haha

Time for a rumour. Popovic to be croatias new national coach

Rubbish, we will never do better.

As far as I'm concerned, he's the one that will keep our club in good stead. The minute he's gone, we become like every other club

I'm divided on popovic, he's building an empire in an salary capped league he has high turn over of players because there greedy little arseholes so thank god for the santalabs,Coles, topar, and fat heads who care about the fans, yes it does frustrate the hell out of me the ins and outs, but a good bean counter manager is hard to find

If you say his name too many times he appears :P

I don't know if I agree with everything you say:

    - I don't call culling half of your squad year in year out building an empire (look at what victory have done over the past 3 years)

    - Players trying to earn as much money as possible in a short time frame shouldn't be called greedy

    - Some players were let go, some were told they weren't wanted & others were not good enough so I don't know if you say they don't care about the fans

    - The players you mentioned that "care about the fans" might not be here if they didn't have a contract till next season

    - Bean counter manager? As in a manager who ensures that they keep 24/26 players under the cap? That should be the prerequisite of every manager.

They don't care about the fans, its moreso they aren't really good enough to get a gig outside of the A-league

Haha ouch nice what's your view

    Popa in!!

Okay how he got rid of some of our favourite players in the past few years wasn't good but when you're successful then nobody has any validity when they criticise him. For example when Megsy got forced out it was hard to watch but when NTS & Spira do so well you can't complain. When he didn't replace Mooy or Ono everyone was critical but then a few months later he delivers an ACL tittle. Then at the end of last season he gets rid of a large percentage of the squad, it will be interesting to see what happens in May next year & what narrative klaxon we will be able tell about this season. You can see we have recruited very well but it all depends on how well we go in S4 to see how people will judge him.

We didn't have a large turn over of players because the players weren't loyal but more due to each players individual situation. Some players just weren't good enough, some players Popa felt were at the end of the usefulness, some players wanted to move on, some players were never getting a contract for the 15/16 season, some players didn't fit the style/type of football wants the club to play etc. Using 38-39 players last season meant that at least 10-13 players couldn't get a contract because squad sizes are limited to 26.

Popa is a ruthless manager who needs to work on his man management of players that are not in the core of his squad but you can't argue with the way he sets them up, the way he prepares them & the belief he instils in his teams. Yes he is tactically rigid but for a young coach this is not surprising. Hopefully this season with the experience that he has brought into the coaching staff & the squad, we will start to see a change on the pitch. At this stage of the season, it is too early to make a call (hello the season hasn't started yet).

Shinji Ono no one can replace him. the only players that come close, wouldn't even look at a football for the cash we paid Ono, I'm spewing that Mooy learnt of shinji and not me
