  • Ron Corry SMH Interview

He may be a legend, but Corry prefers to let his boots do the talking. By: Michael Cockerill

RON CORRY has spent a lifetime proving people wrong, and here he is again, defying convention, defying perception, and signing on as the inaugural goalkeeping coach for Western Sydney Wanderers at 70.

Quite right the guy is a legend. He's still got it as well. When I lobbed up to the inaugural Western Sydney Wanderers training session, I watched him go around with Covic and a trial player, when he hit a shot from outside the area that smacked into the top corner. Covic dived full stretch but didn't have a chance.

When I was working with the Wolves, Ron had taken over from Nick Theo, so I got to meet him many times. Ronnie is as straight talking as they come. The bloke will have the utmost respect from the players not just because of his pedigree, however more so the type of man he is. We are lucky to have him on board.

Give Ron 2 or 3 years to work with the junior goalkeeping talent within our nursery and we'll have plenty of good custodians to choose from.

I expect Spider Kalic will also come on board as a keeper coach at the Wanderers next year.

Even in the article photo he likes amazingly fit for being 70, looks more like late 50's.

Yeah, he signed a short term deal at Bling FC before popa committed to the Wanderer's job.

The thing with that deal though is that he signed it after the popa rumours were in full swing, he would've known there was a likely opportunity at wsw. Maybe he just wanted the security for the extra year but I found it curious at the time

    Matty,

Kalac had lunch with popa in the week leading up to him deciding to accept the head coaches role at WSW.

    • The guy is a professional footballer, even playing on a different side to his preferred, the concept of defending doesn’t change. He hardly looked like he was giving it a go. I think all too often we can be so lenient on mistakes made by players across the league. Let’s not forget that they are professionals, they get paid (a bloody decent amount) and should have the skillset required to atleast be able to do a job in a different to preferred position. It’s not like all age, where one week they are banging then in as a striker and then next they’ve got the gloves on as the regular keeper is away with the missus.
    • More like Neverlosin' the way they're going.
