  • Tasmania To Host Wanderers vs Victory Pre-Season Match

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers will face Melbourne Victory in Kingston, Tasmania on Sunday, September 29.

The Wanderers are no strangers to long distance pre-season matches, having faced Wellington Phoenix in the previous pre-season, but this will be the first time they have visited Tasmania, they will fly into Hobart and take a short trip south to the Kingston Twin Ovals playing fields.

The match is part of a double header, with Melbourne Victory also playing a Tasmanian 11 prior to the A-League clash. Melbourne Victory have a noted presence on the island, with long-term sponsorship and community events taking place during the week long tour by the Melbournians.

The Wanderers major link to Tasmania is goalkeeper Jerrad Tyson who was born in Hobart.

Tickets are set to go on sale on Wednesday the 7th of August.

Are they seriously going to take a game there?

Yeah. It's a pre-season match. IIRC Victory sponsor their premier league.

In my view it is an insult to football fans to be playing this game at that venue.  When Victory played its pre-season games in Launceston at least the venue had grandstands and seats.  I don't mind Victory moving the game to Hobart but it should be played at a venue where you can book a seat and be under cover and also I'd rather it not be one recently developed at Government expense specifically for AFL.  I will still drive down for it if I can secure some of the almost non existent seating.

Walter Pless's site linked below shows images of the AFL ground to be used for the game.  The surface will be good if the weather is OK but the facilities for fans are virtually non existent.  The A-League deserves better than this even for a pre-season game.

One of the major issues to me is that in a state where spending on sporting facilities is very low a major justification for this development was that the other 3 AFL grounds in Hobart also hosted cricket so it was hard to find a venue available for AFL pre-season games.  I'm not sure why that gets a project funded above the many other worthy ones for other sports but thats the way it works.

It's a pre-season game which it's purpose is to prepare the players not guarantee lush seats.

No, its part of an ongoing push to lift the profile of the game down here.  The selection of this venue is an absolute joke.  Previous pre-season games here have drawn between 5 and 8k with everyone seated.  Why take the match day experience backwards?

why so butthurt about the venue? mutli-purpose venues are a part of sport, and its in a state that hardly has a professional sporting team.

just be happy that the wanderers are getting international exposure  :cheeky: , and be happy for Dougiejam - who no longer has to tweet the WSW and MVFC a thousand times a day to get a game down there :D

Melbourne Victory have been bringing a game down here since 2006 and one of the major purposes has been to lift the profile of our code in this football backwater.  They have been very successful, showcasing the game and the League here in Launceston at an oval venue but one with proper facilities for the fans and 5k to 8k of us have turned up.  Now they have taken their annual game to the capital to further impact the state but in doing so they have chosen the worst of the four venues available to them.  Why take the game day experience a huge step backwards when far better venues are available in Hobart?

Good luck to the Apple Isle.

I'd give my right testicle for a Wanderers v Riverina XI (or Heart, Victory, AU or whoever) pre-season friendly in Wagga Wagga.

This town needs a big game of real football to silence the AFL mafia.

We have some quality kids running around Wagga, Griffith, Temora, Junee, Cootamundra etc.

Please, please come to Wagga, Wanderers!

It's really about the Victory trying to build it's member base more than anything. Especially playing the "glamour club" Western Sydney (not my quote from article below). Be good to show them what a real football team is like.

Looks like they are acknowledging the lack of seating too:

The Twin Ovals do not have a grandstand, but Boulous said work with the council would see temporary seating and marquees set up around the ground.

"We'll configure the ground so that it is friendly to where people will be sitting along the major hill area so that it creates a decent atmosphere and a good vantage," he said.

WSW have indicated in the mail about seat allocation that the venue for the game against Victory, Kingston Twin Ovals, is in Launceston.  I've put a note on their Facebook page that this is an error.  The venue is 20 min south of Hobart.  Hopefully none of our fans turn up in the wrong city.

Yes.  Launceston is the right city.  Its where I live.  :)

In this case the "right" city is the wrong city.

I must've missed that. What did it say about allocation for the game?

Sorry.  My post wasn't well written.  The mail about seat allocation for the season included information about other issues including the game against Victory in Tasmania.  It is in this part of the email that they wrongly identified the location of the venue for the game.  Not to worry though.  They were only 3 hours drive out.  ;)
