  • Wanderers Chasing Ballack

Not to be outdone by A-League rival Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers is chasing the signature of off-contract Germany star Michael Ballack, The World Game can reveal.

    ][/b]

With the Sky Blues basking in the glory of landing Italian star Alessandro Del Piero on a two-year deal, it has emerged Wanderers has launched an audacious bid of its own for one of Germany's greatest ever players, who's contract at Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen is up.

It is believed representatives of Wanderers have been talking to Ballack's representatives over the past week, with a view to sealing a $1.6 million one-season deal.

Wanderers has filled its five Visa allocations already, but Ballack would still be able to qualify as a non-visa foreign player, eligible by residency in Australia.

In a mouth-watering sub-plot to the A-League's first Sydney derby, Ballack and Del Piero would face off when the two clubs meet for the first time on Saturday 20 October at Parramatta Stadium, should the deal happen.

Ballack is a veteran of 98 appearances for Germany, which he also captained. The 35-year-old midfielder was one of Roman Abramovich's first high profile recruitment coups joining Chelsea from Bayern Munich in 2006, before returning to Bayer Leverkusen in 2010.

The news comes in a ground-breaking week of high profile signings for the A-League, with reports on Wednesday linking Newcastle Jets with the $1 million signing of English striker Emile Heskey on a one-year deal.

Regardless whether we sign MB or not, I'd like to make a point.

Sydney FC have moved the goalpost in the Sydney market, in reaction to WSWFC coming in. Norwester and those others who may think we are forgetting our ethos. Welcome to the derby. This is what it's all about. Oneupmanship. Our clubs will push each other.

    To whose benefit? Ours.

    Bring it on.

This! I was just about to write something similar but you beat me to it. Ever since Sydney signed Del Piero, football in Australia has changed. As little as 2 months ago I don't think anybody would have even dreamed of football being on the front AND back pages of the paper during the NRL and AFL finals. It would have been completely unthinkable. Now more people than ever people are talking about our sport and sponsors are seeing this a great value option.

Anyone who has a crack at Gorman for changing his philosophy with the club surely has to realise that our sport has changed quite a bit in a very short period of time. He'd be crazy not to change with the times, especially considering the good it could do for the sport and by extension, all the other clubs.

Wow the momentum of this is really speeding up! Man i hope it comes off! This is so huuuuge!!

And not only is he a big name star, he really is the type of player that would round off our team. Play him at number 10 (in #13 offcourse), this will allow him to use his attacking ability, and he would attract so much attention from opposition players it will leave holes for Mooy to be more influencial aswell.

And regarding the whole Gorman lieing to fans about our proposed philosophy, it still stands, we have done so much community work, where -"a team for the community, potentialy with a super star in ballack!!! Yew!

    Wanderers reject Ballack

Western Sydney Wanderers have turned down an offer for former Germany captain Michael Ballack's services. It is believed the Wanderers rejected the approach from Ballack's Australian-based representatives because they were not convinced of Ballack's condition and commitment.

As I said Ballack seems to have chased the club not the other way around

How does it go from a 90% done deal to us rejecting any approach?

I wish it dragged on a lil longer for the sake of coverage. Pretty **** result in every perspective.

I hope keep thinking, because we need abit of the limelight back.

You wouldn't feel disappointment if you didn't believe it in the first place. Was never going to happen.

Never said i was dissapointed. And was always sceptical.

Just opportunity lost. With the a-league ball well and truly rolling, its undoubtly very wise and healthy to keep pushing it!

Given the circumstances of be it a reliable or unreliable articles we should have milked it abit.

Hopefully we see positive articles surface of the club we are and our ambitions etc etc.

if he isnt fit and wont benefit the team then its good that we rejected the contract.

we dont want to loose our identity for the sake of a big name player who wont be playing except for a game every 2 months and be on alot of money.

anyway this got us back in the papers, so it served a purpose

Disappointing, not so much that we didn't get him, but far more so that we had the chance to get him but rejected it.

He would be a class addition in many aspects.

Exactly. Popa is still sticking to his philosophies regarding player recruitment which is good to see.

I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of other big names pop up in the next week or two re coming to the A-league. Whether they happen or not - who knows.

Kewell is an utter kent of a human being and would bleed the club dry, do not want at all.

We're talking about professional footballers here. Most of them would bleed the club dry if they could.

The club was obviously in negotiations with his manager. If he is not worth it, then he is not worth it. The guys negotiating on our side aren't stupid, and would know what Ballack could bring to the table. However players ask for ridicilous demands these days. Look at the Melbourne Victory and Harry Kewell saga last year. Ballack is turning 36 this year (and also injury prone). It is a huge risk, especially if he gets injured.
