  • Wanderers Draw Guizhou Renhe, Ulsan & TBD of Japan

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have been drawn in Group H alongside Guizhou Renhe of China, Ulsan Hyundai of South Korea & a team from the Japanese J-League that is yet to be determined. The Wanderers will kick off their inaugural AFC Champions League campaign against Ulsan Hyundai on Wednesday the 26th of February at Parramatta Stadium.

The draw took place in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon. Preceding the draw was a new initiative called "60 Minutes" designed to reduce time wasting during AFC Champions League matches. Statistics showed that because of time wasting most matches only included 53 minutes of game time, in comparison to many other leagues and FIFA competitions where 60 minutes is the norm. 60 minutes is the new target, and the AFC believe this will improve the spectacle of the football on offer.

Guizhou Renhe qualified as the 2013 Chinese FA Cup winners. Guizhou finished 4th in the 2013 Chinese Super League. The club has an Australian connection through Jonas Salley, who played for the New Zealand Knights, Sydney FC, Adelaide United & Gold Coast United.

Ulsan Hyundai of South Korea qualified as the Runner Up of the 2013 K-League. Ulsan won the 2012 edition of the AFC Champions League, defeating Al-Ahli 3-0.

The Japanese team in the group is yet to be confirmed. While Yokohama F. Marinos finished 2nd in the 2013 J.League, the position may be impacted by the Emperor's Cup. If Sanfrecce Hiroshima win the Emperor's Cup then the beaten Emperor's Cup finalist will take the Group H position. If Yokohama or Kawasaki win the Emperor's Cup then Cerezo Osaka will take the Group H position. If one of the other teams wins the Emperor's Cup then Yokohama will take the position.

If Melbourne Victory progress to the Group Stage their opponents will be defending AFC Champions League winners Guangzhou Evergrande of China, Jeonbuk Motors of Korea & the Japanese Emperor's Cup winner. The Central Coast Mariners are up against Sanfrecce Hiroshima, FC Seoul & the winner of the other qualification play-off.

Every Asian Champions League group stage is tough and the Wanderers have received a draw that reflects this. While none of the other teams in group are the Premiers of their respective leagues, both Ulsan & Yokohama (if they qualify) finished 1 point from the top of their leagues and will provide an imposing challenge.

    Fixtures:

Wanderers vs Ulsan - 26th February

Guizhou Renhe vs Wanderers - 12th March

Wanderers vs TBD Japan - 19th March

Japan TBD vs Wanderers - 1st April

Ulsan vs Wanderers - 15th April

Wanderers vs Guizhou Renhe - 22nd April

Games are tough and mistakes are often punished. You have to put away your limited chances.

The individual players in the East Asian leagues are far superior to our own players'

Where HAL teams can win is being compact and taking their chances. If you play an open expansive game (like Brisbane tried to), you'll get destroyed because one on one, all their players are better.

I think the Japanese are technically far too good for us.

Still I am sure Popa will set up accordingly. We have a few Australian players with Asian experience and this will come in handy.

And we have Ono O no no no!

Wouldn't recommend Ulsan unless you're planning to do some travel, K-league attendances are pretty low.. more so for ACL games. I'd say if we plan to do a tour as a big group.. needs to be Guiyang or Japan. We want to make an impact both locally & abroad. Guiyang should be a serious consideration because it's probably cheaper than Japan & they get OK crowds.

Anyone know's the visa requirements for China, Japan and Korea.

Do you need to apply or just get stamp at the gate.

    I'm jealous of the Mariners.

Got any more videos of our opponents? Would love to see what we're up against (and yes, so jealous of the Mariners lol)

Yoko look great but Guizhou seem to go all out active as well... Crucial point is, its pretty impractical for us to travel in numbers to the Guizhou game, because the Derby is 4 days before it, and Adelaide at home is 3 days after it... Not a lot of leeway.... The Japanese date is definitely best fit for travelling.

for Oz passport holders it's visa issued on arrival for both Japan and Korea

not sure about China - it used to require you get visa approved before arrival which took a few days via one of their Embassies in Oz

As far as I am aware, if you are travelling on an Australian passport you don't need a visa to Japan & Korea. Visa required for China - $60 I think.

That still applies. Could be quicker to do it online, then you drop off your passport at the visa application centre on Elizabeth St in the city.

Club confirms Japanese opponent will be either Yokohama F. Marinos or Kawasaki Frontale, so Tokyo here we come!

By New Year’s Day we will know our Japanese opponents following the conclusion of Japan’s Emperor’s Cup tournament. What we do know is that we will face either Yokohama F. Marinos or Kawasaki Frontale.

Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Yokohama F. Marinos finished first and second in the J-League respectively, therefore if either of those two teams win the Emperor’s Cup, Yokohama will take the Emperor’s Cup Champions League slot. This will mean we will play Kawasaki Frontale, who finished third in the J-league, as they will move into the slot reserved for the J-League runners-up.

If any club apart from Hiroshima or Yokohama wins then we will be joined by Yokohama F. Marinos.

    Hi,

This may not be the right thread for this post ( didn't know where else to put it )

Does anyone else think we might have a home game advantage due to the length of our nets? This is something were used to, but is the opposition?

I'd love to hear Jamcals position on this?

That's an interesting thought... I haven't been able to study the goal nets of East Asia as much as I would have liked, my areas off expertise are largely Oceanic/European goal nets, so I can't provide a conclusive opinion on this. However I can only imagine that the nets in Japan are far shallower than that which we see at Wanderland... Therefore whilst we would get a home advantage, intimidating the opposition with our nets of sizeable girth, the nets we encounter on our travels will pose a difficult task as it may be tough for the players to get their eyes used to such petit nets.

I can only imagine the governing body of the ACL would have to step in and propose a competition wide standard for the size of the goal nets. Not to do so would simply be irresponsible. However I must wonder if it would be possible to apply this standard to the West Asian clubs... A sizeable challenge, no doubt, but one of upmost importance.

Jamcal here are video's of both the Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium (home of Ulsan Hyundai) and Guiyang Olympic Centre (home of Guizhou Renhe) goal nets in action. As I'm sure is immediately apparent, both sets of goal nets are of at least an equivalent size to Wanderland, if not larger. This disproves your supposition that East Asia would have shallower goal nets, and I hope lays to rest any fears you have about the fairness of the competition

The final of the emperors cup is going to be between Yokohama Marinos and Sanfreece Hiroshima.

So depending on who wins, who will we play in ACL?

    We get Kawasaki Frontale.

Their Active support.. (video 3 weeks old)

They look to have the largest active support group in our group.

We are clearly better then all of them.

    They're okay, lullaby chants.
