Western Sydney Wanderers have secured a top 4 finish and a home final in their inaugural A-League Season.
With only 5 rounds to play and a maximum of 15 points available, Heart, Newcastle and Sydney FC are all on 27 points. Even with winning all 5 matches and Western Sydney losing all 5, it would leave the chasing pack 2 points short of Western Sydney's current total of 44 points.
The new A-League finals format for this season will see the teams that finishes 3rd hosting 6th place, and 4th place hosting 5th place in the first week elimination finals, with the winner of those clashes being hosted by the teams that finish 2nd and 1st place respectively in the Semi-Finals.
This ensures a home final for Western Sydney, although a drop into 3rd or 4th would mean that winning the opening round of the finals would lead to an away match in the Semi-Final.
Should Western Sydney and Central Coast secure 1st and 2nd place between them, it would guarantee the Grand Final would be played in Sydney unless both lost their Semi-Final fixtures..
To secure a top 2 position, Western Sydney need to pick-up a minimum of 7 points in their last 5 matches, or 6 points should they retain their existing superior goal difference to Adelaide & Melbourne Victory.
The home final is widely tipped to be played at Parramatta Stadium however a Sydney Grand looks to be played at the Sydney Football Stadium due to a fixture clash with a music concert at Homebush's Stadium Australia.
This is a massive achievement for a team who were tipped by many to take the wooden spoon, but the board and CEO Lyall Gorman are sure to keep celebrations to a minimum and keep the squad focused on other objectives.
