  • Western Sydney Wanderers Secure Top 4 Finish + Home Final!

    mack

Western Sydney Wanderers have secured a top 4 finish and a home final in their inaugural A-League Season.

With only 5 rounds to play and a maximum of 15 points available, Heart, Newcastle and Sydney FC are all on 27 points. Even with winning all 5 matches and Western Sydney losing all 5, it would leave the chasing pack 2 points short of Western Sydney's current total of 44 points.

The new A-League finals format for this season will see the teams that finishes 3rd hosting 6th place, and 4th place hosting 5th place in the first week elimination finals, with the winner of those clashes being hosted by the teams that finish 2nd and 1st place respectively in the Semi-Finals.

This ensures a home final for Western Sydney, although a drop into 3rd or 4th would mean that winning the opening round of the finals would lead to an away match in the Semi-Final.

Should Western Sydney and Central Coast secure 1st and 2nd place between them, it would guarantee the Grand Final would be played in Sydney unless both lost their Semi-Final fixtures..

To secure a top 2 position, Western Sydney need to pick-up a minimum of 7 points in their last 5 matches, or 6 points should they retain their existing superior goal difference to Adelaide & Melbourne Victory.

The home final is widely tipped to be played at Parramatta Stadium however a Sydney Grand looks to be played at the Sydney Football Stadium due to a fixture clash with a music concert at Homebush's Stadium Australia.

This is a massive achievement for a team who were tipped by many to take the wooden spoon, but the board and CEO Lyall Gorman are sure to keep celebrations to a minimum and keep the squad focused on other objectives.

So imagine we have top spot sewn up by the last game against Newie, who are in direct competition with the Smurfs for 6th spot.  Just thinkin' aloud...

I know popa is strictly professional and wouldn't allow it... But by god if this happens I think we'd celebrate a Newy win in the same raucous style we'd celebrate our own ;)

    LOL.

We will finish on the table above the Smurfs in our first season, with a rookie coach, with a squad of rejected players, with a club not even 1 year old, with a team that couldn't score until round 4, without a $2m marquee player, with a fanbase that was created from nothing and is now best in the country, with the media all too keen to kick us when we're down, with Parramatta Stadium instead of ANZ. So many great memories in our 1st season.

    I love this club.

they'll do what theyve been saying all along - take it one game at a time. Their ability to put top spot, the amazing year, etc. out of their minds and keep focused completely bewilders me. I'd have the biggest boner if I played for them

Only 7 points required to secure a top 2? Don't get me wrong, I've got as big a theoretical boner as JAR mentioned above just about the thought of the chance of finishing premiers, I just didn't realise how mathematically close we were to guaranteeing a week off!

Although only a small chance, what if we had a home semifinal against Esfc . How likely is it that the FFA would move it to anz to allow more people to see it ( and collect the extra cash ) .

What a great effort... full credit to EVERYONE, from the coaching staff, players, media (for the most part) and ourselves.

    Great Story !!

Home final at Parra would be freakin epic.

If we were to finish first, to play against ESFC, they would have to finish in 3rd, 4th or 5th and win (obviously) their first semi, and a team below them would have to win. If we finished second, ESFC would have to finish 4th, 5th o 6th and a team above them would have to win. That's in order to get a sydney derby in the finals

Would be epic if somehow there was a sydney derby and a melbourne derby in the same weekend of the finals but I don't think this is possible unless WSW and MVFC somehow finish top 2. CCM would have to fail miserably over the coming weeks for this to happen though I think.

Victory could play heart in week 1 of the finals if MV is 3rd and Heart is 6th or MV is 4th and Heart is 5th.

Can't see it happening in week 2 of the finals though.

nah thats what I mean, victory would have to finish 2nd and us 1st (or vice versa). Sydney and Heart would have to win their ties in week one, and their placings on the table would have to coincide with the positioning of us and victory on the table.

This would also mean that sydney or heart will have kicked out mariners in that first week. Extremely unlikely situation haha
