  • Western Sydney Wanderers Sold

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers & Football Federation Australia have confirmed the sale of the club to a consortium headed by Pirtek CEO Paul Lederer.

The club, which has been under the ownership of the FFA since it began, will be turned over to the consortium on the 30th of June.

The reported cost is $10 million, lower than the originally estimated 15 and then 12 million figures. This likely is a result of the consortium driving a hard bargain with the FFA, knowing the FFA had to get the asset off their hands to avoid long-term governments implications.

The other three members of the consortium are Jefferson Chang, Glenn Duncan & David Slade, each respected businessmen with an interest in the sport. Lederer has been a director of the club prior to the purchase, and he spoke about the acquisition.

“The spirit of this club comes from the members, fans and the people of Western Sydney. Nothing will change in that regard. I have been a director of the club for the past two years and I’ve had the privilege to play a part and see first-hand what makes this club so special. The consortium has responsibility to ensure the Wanderers have a sound financial base and a strong administration so the club can continue to grow and be successful on and off the field.â€

We got a Pirtek dude on the board. Some internal obstacles to overcome if we are to build our own stadium now.

Yeah that was my first thought, no chance of a new stadium.

But now we have people who could make upgrading Parramatta a fair bit easier, and perhaps would benefit more from it too

Yeah Gorman is a businessman. So are you. So am I. I wonder if someone offered you two million dollars and told you to forget about WSW for the next couple of years. What would your passion be then?

I swear it, and I'll happily sign any declaration and contract, but even if someone offered me $1 BILLION to stop supporting WSW, I would reject them.

I think for some of you, football is just a game. It's just this fun little thing you do on the weekend, and if you lose, you think nothing more of it. For some of us, it's our religion. It's in our blood. We don't just support a club, we live for it.

AND I'M GOING TO WRITE THIS IN CAPS LOCK FOR EVERYONE WHO INSISTS I HAVE IT IN FOR LYALL GORMAN. I DO NOT. I HAVE STATED REPEATEDLY HE HAS DONE A GOOD JOB AND I'M GRATEFUL FOR THAT. NONETHELESS, THAT DOESN'T CHANGE THE FACT HE IS A BUSINESSMAN FIRST AND FOREMOST. EVERYONE, JUST TAKE THE ROSE TINTED GLASSES OFF AND YOU'LL SEE THAT HIS NUMBER ONE PRIORITY IS NOT THE FANS OR PLAYERS; HIS COMMITMENT IS TO RUN THE CLUB AS BUSINESS. ALL HIS DECISIONS CIRCULATE AROUND HOW MUCH MONEY IT WILL MAKE, AND IF YOU ARE ALL BEING NAIVE TO THINK OTHERWISE, THEN THAT'S ON YOU. IT DOESN'T MEAN I HATE THE GUY ANYWAY WHATSOEVER.

You do realise that sporting clubs are run as businesses in this day and age. If the club becomes insolvent and isn't able to pay its debts then it folds. Therefore not wanting your club to be financially responsible and be able to generate enough income to survive is not exactly supporting it.

Aren't Jerome Polenz and Youssuf Hersi also businessmen. They left the club because they didn't get the money they wanted. Not much different to Lyall really in their outlook of wanting to achieve a certain financial target. Everything survives on money these days. That's what keeps it going. Religions take money of the masses so they can build large places of worship to remain relevant. Same as football clubs. Everybody wants to make money. Yes it's a shallow world we live in.

I admire your sentiment if you really say what you mean. But I'm just wondering why Lyall to you is so much different to any other individual who makes money out of the WSW organisation including investors, players or the coaches? Can you explain that one to me?

Stop making strawmen out everything I say.

Just because I point out that Lyall Gorman and is a businessman does NOT mean:

    1. I hate him
    2. I want the club to fold
    3. I want the club to go into debt
    4. Be financially irresponsible

You're attacking a position I have never stated nor agree with.

Hersi and Polenz are professional football players. Their job is to play football and last I checked, they didn't get a % of the sale of the club even though they made us successful. Same for coaches. I can be critical of them for chasing extra money in their limited careers, however, this isn't about them so you're just derailing.

Investors such as NRMA are businesses. Their job is to make more money for stakeholders. They care about their business and making money, first and foremost. Lyall Gorman falls under the category of businessman. He purposely held up the sale of the club solely for the purpose of filling up his bank account. He put his money ahead of the club and you're being naive to think he would otherwise.

I SHOULD WRITE IN CAPS AND BOLD BECAUSE YOU'RE STRUGGLING TO GRASP THE NOTION THAT I CAN BE OBSERVANT OF SOMEONE'S BEHAVIOUR AND NOT WANT THEM OR THE CLUB TO SUFFER. I DON'T HATE LYALL GORMAN AND I DON'T WANT THE CLUB TO FOLD.

Full stadium + no money= good business (eg: Wanderers, Man City, PSG, Man UTD...).

Empty stadium + lots of money= bad business (eg: Smurfs, Gold Coast, GWS...).

Lyall signed up for a cruisey job and got a golden handshake, when we needed help he wisely kept his distance. F*** him.

I did a 10 minute google on the new guys.

Lederer we kind of know a bit about. Big football fan, been on our board from the start so he should know what he's doing. From western Sydney too which makes me more confident he'll get along with the fans.

Don't really know what Jefferson Cheng's into, some sort of airline business. But sounds like he's a football man too so that's got to be a positive I guess. (On a sidenote, he was also kidnapped and held to ransom in 2009)

Glenn Duncan was head of Pirtek and was on the board of the Eels but quit after a sh*tfight with the CEO (or something like that). Might be the wrong code but he has experience in sport in the area which is important.

David Slade is a partner in some British fashion shop. He worked with Lowy for 30 years and they're best mates so draw your own conclusions from that. Not sure of what he might actually bring except for some more dollars (Lowy conspiracy theories aside).

Sounds like not a bad mix to me if I'm honest

I think Pirtek owner Duncan had the shites cause Eels wanted to charge more for Pirtek to become sponsors on the eels jersey. Pirtek said no and then lost the contract. Duncan being the smart businessman instead decided to bid for the stadium name rights of Parra stadium and therefore his company now receives much more publicity. Eels now play at his stadium (Pirtek stadium) rather than Pirtek sponsor the eels.

A smart astute businessman like that on board for WSW is what we need.

Duncan as sponsor also pushed the eels board to sack Daniel Anderson in 2010.

They then appointed Duncan's mate who was also NZ coach (pirtek sponsored the kiwis) and under Kearney the eels crashed to the bottom.

Anything related to the Parea board is bad news. Hopefully nothing like that happens to us.

Running the club to ensure it prospers is/was Lyall's job description... He has to run the club as a business in order for it to stay in good shape, we aren't a charity. If Good Samaritans ran football clubs then there'd be none. He carried out his duties with great passion and I don't begrudge him getting a small reward for all his efforts. Good on him

Agree, but what Lyall doesn't yet realise is that in very small text at the bottom of the contract it states -

Any severance bonus paid from the proceeds of the sale of WSW can only be used for the purpose of reinvesting back in to WSW

Therefore there will be a cheque handed over that he has to hand straight back  :good:

That is how it works isn't it?

No.  Pushing up the price means more money for the FFA and more money for Gorman and less money that the new owners have to spend on running the club.

I think Lyall has done a great job. Part of his strength was that "he got it." He understood what needed to be done amd how to engage the community.

Let us not underestimate also Popas influence on the club.

Anyway, I'm more interested in seeing what the new owners do.

It's expensive to own a football club and I hope they are willing to stump up the cash when needed.

It was interesting to read in one of the articles on the signing of the documents for the transfer of the licence that the $4m seed funding from the Government was largely untouched.  In our first season this was dipped into to the tune of $1m+ so hopefully the comment means the club has made a good profit in its second season.  If this is so we could expect the same level of expenditure on a marquee and if the profit is repeated the owners could start setting it aside to put towards our own training facilities.

That's amazing really about the seed funding.

So sick of reading comments about how we've only done so well because we have unfettered access to the FFAs bank account.

I say mostly used to prop up the jets in a few months when tinkler chucks it in

I think that the Newcastle Jets will be okay compared to the Newcastle Knights,

The main problem with the Knights is that Tinkler has to guarantee $10.5m per year for the Knights and he could come up with the money,

I doubt that the Jets require such a large investment from Tinkler to keep them afloat.

I doubt that Tinkler has spent a lot of money on the Jets anyway, he only bought them to show that he could run a sporting club for a year so then he could by the Knights
