  • Western Sydney Wanderers Sold

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers & Football Federation Australia have confirmed the sale of the club to a consortium headed by Pirtek CEO Paul Lederer.

The club, which has been under the ownership of the FFA since it began, will be turned over to the consortium on the 30th of June.

The reported cost is $10 million, lower than the originally estimated 15 and then 12 million figures. This likely is a result of the consortium driving a hard bargain with the FFA, knowing the FFA had to get the asset off their hands to avoid long-term governments implications.

The other three members of the consortium are Jefferson Chang, Glenn Duncan & David Slade, each respected businessmen with an interest in the sport. Lederer has been a director of the club prior to the purchase, and he spoke about the acquisition.

“The spirit of this club comes from the members, fans and the people of Western Sydney. Nothing will change in that regard. I have been a director of the club for the past two years and I’ve had the privilege to play a part and see first-hand what makes this club so special. The consortium has responsibility to ensure the Wanderers have a sound financial base and a strong administration so the club can continue to grow and be successful on and off the field.â€

If true this just reinforces the fact that the AFL simply has no clue about Western Sydney.

I feel sick with rage , gutless wonderers over at afl hq and if gorman takes this its a stab and the back no matter how you look at it.

Gorman chaired the Central Coast Mariners before taking charge at the fledgling Wanderers, who have reached the A-League grand final in successive seasons, achieved close to 17,000 members with a waiting list, and now boast the second highest revenue in the competition behind Melbourne Victory.

    Fledgling just means new.

I don't think it's a stab in the back, it's a #SmellTheFear moment, where instead of hacks like Ben Buckley and Damien De Bohun coming from other sports and doing a **** job, we have a guy like Gorman coming from football over to eggball, signalling that the afl hasn't got anyone better.

How have we caused headaches for GWS? (According to article). AFL paranoia.

They should be confident enough in their own "brand" to just focus on its postives rather then having to bring football doen and seeing it as a threat.

Its like the article says it sets about trying to remove the head ache for the afl , lowy is power insecure thats why he insists on surronding himself with idiots, the least he could of done was retain gorman. We get left with de bohn whoisunder the assumption we are all criminals

Not directly (ie we didn't go sabotage their playing facility or anything like that), we've simply shown them how Western Sydney can support a team in a sport it loves, instead of a sport it doesn't love, created by Victorians who lose loads of games by blowout margins.

Gorman was generally considered to be a failure as the Head of the A-League so no one would want him back in FFA head office.

He should of circulated touching emails around FFA head office that listed, in dot format, all the positive attributes of his coworkers.

I'm still confused as to how and why Gorman is leaving the Wanderers.

Did the new owners consider him surplus to requirements?

I wonder why this is the first we're hearing of the Lyall clause.

Likely only the highest of the high ranking officials knew it. Lyall, Buckley, Gorman, Lowy, then as the club was appointed to be sold, likely a few of the UBS people, and then the new owners. It's likely not even De Bohun knew about it.

I was gonna say... Does De Bohun know anything?

He was appointed to the position of Executive Chairman of Wanderers by the FFA and the new owners will want their own Chairman.  Effectively his position doesn't exist in the new organisation.  They will need a CEO to look after the day to day operation of the business but they would normally want their "own man" in the job.

But Flytox, if he has done such a great job (as we all know he has), why wouldn't the new owners want him kept on?

Salary? Were the FFA paying him too much? New Owners could find someone cheaper?

It just seems as though Lyall was mostly the brains behind our success.

    I'm disappointed he is leaving.

More so than Shinji or Polenz.

    Good players are replaceable.

Good management is harder to find.

The new owners will do the exact same job Gorman was doing

IMO Gorman was always a short term guy. He said from the outset (at the fan forums) that he wouldn't be around forever. He seems to me to be more of a hired gun for FFA: Come in, set it up so it is stable and move on.

He did a great job whilst he was here, but all things must come to an end.

I see the new owners wanting their own man running the show. Someone who they've chosen and appointed.

And regarding Gorman's cut from the sale: he's just being a shrewd businessman. People don't get to his position without being a bit ruthless and cunning. There aren't many completely honest and straightforward people in the upper echelons of business. If they were too honest they wouldn't be in the position they are.

I'm not sure he would want the reduction in role and commensurate reduction in salary.

I'm not at all disappointed he is leaving.  He has done his job and having taken a cut from the sale I'm not sure he would be in a position to manage the staff, and relate to the fans, he has used to line his pockets.

    mmmm, Flytox.

There are so many assumptions in your reply, yet so few facts to back them up.

I'll just have to assume you have ALL the inside information.

I'd rather Lyall to have stayed. But anyhow.

(And I've never met the bloke).

We got a Pirtek dude on the board. Some internal obstacles to overcome if we are to build our own stadium now.

We can always name the new stadium pirtek as well ;)

I just hope they fix the issue of too many members and not enough spare seats.

I also want them to ramp up the advertising, we all saw 2 weeks of constant in your face news about the state of origin - I want the same for WSW.

Comparing origin to random A-League matches? We'll never get the same news level as state of origin. That's the centrepiece of a billion dollar set of investments and self-interest from multiple companies.

SMH says "outgoing chairman Lyall Gorman..."[/size]

I hadn't heard of this before but disappointing.

As I'll say below, there was a news article that Melbourne victory in November stating that they were looking at pinching Lyall at the end of the season so I was waiting for news to come out about this

It is understood much of the hold-up in the sale has arisen from the final fee paid to outgoing executive chairman Lyall Gorman.Upon taking his role in 2012, Gorman inserted a clause – ratified by then-FFA chief executive Ben Buckley – that allowed him to take a percentage of the final sale of the club, in addition to his salary.Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/western-sydney-wanderers-sold-20140529-zrrmx.html#ixzz334Q9X1a7

No wonder he has been talking up the business for the last 18 months.
Lyall has made it pretty clear from the beginning that he wasn't planning on hanging around and by entering this clause into his contract almost confirms that he was planning on walking out of the Wanderers once the sale was complete. It is a bit harsh on the average supporter when Lyall says all these amazing things about the club and western Sydney but didn't make it clear that the better he made the Wanderers, the more successful they became, the more that he was going to financially benefit from the sale. In saying that it was a smart move by the FFA and lowy because it made Lyall more determined and work hard to make sure that the club succeeded. As all have mentioned, suits will come and go but the fans won't abandon the club, so nobody should be surprised that Lyall was after the best deal for himself as he is just an administrator but just like the foundation players that we applaud and thank for there love passion and commitment to the cause, I say the same thing to Lyall! Thanks for all your hard work and blood sweat and tears that went into the making of this very great club!

"The consortium has responsibility to ensure the Wanderers have a sound financial base". Is that code for we aren't coughing up big to bring in top level marquees and retain Popa? The likes of Chelsea and Manchester City didn't climb from relative obscurity to the summit of the EPL by being financially prudent.

I don't think so, I think it means that we can't turn into a ESFC blowing money just like the way labour likes to run a government which can be likened to just throwing money at a board and hoping it sticks. Money will be spent in a way that gets maximum benefit for each dollar spent, but not blowing things out so our expenses outweigh our revenue so the new owners are making massive losses each year.

I like how your new owner sponsors Hakoah FC in East Sydney by majority of everyone's account that's the same as Sydney FC

    http://www.maccabi.com.au/NSW/HakoahSydneyCityEastFC/Sponsors.cfm

Excuse me whilst I put on my tin hat, but isn't it bloody amazing that a workd wide search for investors into WSW finds three out of four of lowy's buddy's from hakoah? Bloody interesting coincidence that!

I'm hearing reports that Lyall is going to the Brisbane Lions (AFL)!

Apparently the AFL are throwing lots of coin his way and want him out of Western sydney because he is fu€king over GWS

Smart move by the AFL, probably trying to emulate the successes on and off the field brought to WSW by Lyall, being the astute business man he is and the amount of money available in the AwFuL in an article a while ago about Lyall and WSW, he was talking up his relationship he had with the GWS boss which may explain how this opportunity came around for him.

The rumours I had heard were Gorman was going to Melbourne Victory. So who knows what is going to happen.

It was listed in a news article prior to the new year, that's where I read it but I guess so much time has passed things must have changed

Gorman was generally considered to be a failure as the Head of the A-League so no one would want him back in FFA head office.

Forgive me Flytox, but my knowledge of the aleague is next to zero prior to the Wanderers, how was he a failure? How would he be considered failure when we have had Buckley and de bouhn which I would regard as worse than what I have seen from Lyall. Also if he was considered such a failure why would lowy place so much trust in him in charge of a fledging club as we were called?

This is too true, sure the new owners would want their own man but why not offer it to Lyall and make it clear that he didn't want the job going forward. Just because there would be a restructure and a change in the organisational structure doesn't mean he wouldn't be a good CEO. Also this own man theory, yes it could be true but generally if the existing boss was a loose cannon or incompetent (de bouhn) they would want to bring in someone new who would be generally brought in as someone who will follow the the ideas of the owners or would be more easily mouldable.

The new owners will do the exact same job Gorman was doing

That's a big call mick, Lyall has left big shoes to fill for someone who was a proper footballing person and shrewd businessman/operator

When Gorman was in charge NQF & GCU both failed.

Compared to De Bohun though it's hard to be harsh on Gorman's tenure as A-League head.
