  • Western Sydney Wanderers Sold

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers & Football Federation Australia have confirmed the sale of the club to a consortium headed by Pirtek CEO Paul Lederer.

The club, which has been under the ownership of the FFA since it began, will be turned over to the consortium on the 30th of June.

The reported cost is $10 million, lower than the originally estimated 15 and then 12 million figures. This likely is a result of the consortium driving a hard bargain with the FFA, knowing the FFA had to get the asset off their hands to avoid long-term governments implications.

The other three members of the consortium are Jefferson Chang, Glenn Duncan & David Slade, each respected businessmen with an interest in the sport. Lederer has been a director of the club prior to the purchase, and he spoke about the acquisition.

“The spirit of this club comes from the members, fans and the people of Western Sydney. Nothing will change in that regard. I have been a director of the club for the past two years and I’ve had the privilege to play a part and see first-hand what makes this club so special. The consortium has responsibility to ensure the Wanderers have a sound financial base and a strong administration so the club can continue to grow and be successful on and off the field.â€

When Gorman was in charge NQF & GCU both failed.Compared to De Bohun though it's hard to be harsh on Gorman's tenure as A-League head.

    Gorman did well this CCM.

But how did he get it so right with Wanderers?

If the FFA approached West Sydney with the same attitude as CCM or NQF or GCU - the "franchise" give the fans a free clapper mentality it would not have worked.

    WS had established football communities.

    So why was he successful?

    * he is a talented businessman and like all business people you have successes and failures

    * the FFA could not afford not to listen to the people. 3 franchise failures, Tinkler pulling out, owner revolt, the A-league was on the edge.

    * dont underestimate the influence of one man at our club. Ill give you a clue. It rhymes with "cricket pitch"

We did it.... not the suits... the fans!

Success will only continue if they understand this.

WSWpostcode - I tend to agree with this but ultimately, they/he put the process in place firstly for it to happen.

I honestly think though, that without the RBB, the Wanderers wouldn't be who and what they are today.

    Thank you.

Without the RBB this club would be nothing.

    mickisnot,

It's quite obvious that the major reason why the Wanderers are so successful is due to the RBB.

The club has done things right, which is why I support what Lyall has done and am sad to see him leave.

On the other hand, the RBB is what I believe is why we are successful and as popular to this day as we are.

There has been many reasons why, but I think the  turning point was the first call and response at the game against Adelaide when we won 6-1,

in season 1. I wasn't able to be there that night, but watched on television. That night blew me away. There wasn't even a huge crowd.

It was then that I knew we had something special to offer as a club to the A-League.

Myself and my son, (now aged 11) had always followed the Parramatta Eels. I'd always taken him to as many Eels games as I could. He was (and still is) a big fan of the Eels. I've grown up on them myself. But when the Wanderers came along, and gave me my life long dream/fix of a proper sporting atmosphere, I changed boats.

We both cannot get enough of the Wanderers now, which is why we did 7 away trips this season.

The highlight was of course the grand final. I never planned to go to Brisbane, and wasn't going to, until I got an offer of free accommodation on the Gold Coast from an Eels supporting mate of mine, who also supports the Wanderers.

It was one of the best days of my life, and indeed, the greatest day of my sons life. He stood in the RBB, and sang for the full 120 minutes. Even I couldn't keep up.

We did the pub. We did the march.

We had a ball. It was all due to what the RBB are.

You guys have been the best thing for sporting support in this country for a long time. Victory FC and Bling FC have been pretty  good in the past, but we have raised the bar.

The RBB have made some mistakes along the way, but as long as you guys keep reinventing chants and involving us plebs in the outer, you'll always be the lifeblood of the club.

I can't wait for our next match, and even today, at a birthday party I attended (mine - lol) the kids were doing "who do we sing for chants". It was even commented upon by a member of my family who doesn't follow football, how many Wanderers stickers he see's on cars these days.

I LOVE THIS CLUB!!! AND THE RBB IS VERY MUCH REPONSIBLE.

He wasn't in charge of those clubs or the day to day running of the club, if anything they were a great template for everything they did wrong so the Wanderers could do something entirely different. However to say that him being in charge led to the downfall of those clubs, as much as I would say despite everything that de bouhn does to ruin the aleague and the Wanderers we some how seem to get better on and off the field instead of being worse off!

not sure i agree with the without the RBB this club would be nothing sentiment. RBB is about 3 thousand if they all turn up so that makes about 13 thousand other members.

yes the RBB adds atmosphere and passion and all that, but the local area really needed a football team to bring the various football communities together and the wanderers did this, and its now sold for what 10 or 12 mil on the back of 16 thousand members not just 3000

Lol you forgot the Sydney Rovers failure as well. True that Ian Rowden farked it up, but also blame Gorman/FFA for giving Rowden the go ahead in the first place.

Also don't forget that Gorman handed the Jets license to Tinkler too. Look how that's ended up in the NRL :(

There were always gonna be die hards who would follow a western Sydney team in relatively decent numbers. The RBB though created an atmosphere that has enticed and drawn the people in who wouldn't necessarily have supported the club so religiously. A lot of females and sceptics of football as well as euro snobs were dragged along to a game and immediately loved the party atmosphere, change their opinion and want to come back regularly

The club sold because it was able to make an imprint in the community. The RBB have given us the chants we love to enjoy, la banda we love hearing, the marches we love to walk in .. etc

Without these fantastic additions we would be like any other franchise within the A-league.

Did you go to the Australia vs South Africa game Leslie? If no. Go to the Socceroos thread on this forum and scroll through the comments on how the passion was.

Break even in 2014 is a brilliant result.

Definitely, makes you wonder though, the prize money for the ACL games, did all that go to the wsw club?

Or since we are under the FFA, the FFA take the money and split it to other A-League clubs?

There are clubs that have been in the HAL for 10 years and have been in the red the entire time.

I don't think many people realise how massive this is.

In large parts will be down to the 16k members and the thousands of jerseys the club has sold. Probably also the good stadium deal that they negotiated and also the sponsorship $$ that was signed. Wasn't NRMA one of the biggest sponsorship deals ever in the HAL?

To be in the black after 2 years is insane.

    Link to comment

NRMA is the biggest single company major sponsorship. Victory had a bigger combined major sponsorship there was a season (maybe three seasons ago?) they had a sponsor for the home & away shirts separately.

It's responsible management, sponsorship, fans etc. Great result.

Compare this with ESFC, whose owners pockets are so deep it leads to complacency and inefficiencies. They rack up the biggest debt in the A-league yet their owners drop a few million and wipe it out.

I read somewhere that our ticket prices and memberships are amongst the lowest cost in the League.  If that is correct then it is quite astounding that we have reached profit in our second season.

Our merch sales are ridiculous in terms of volume moved. I think that well would dry up in a few years (if not for next season).

Would be interesting to see where the new owners take it. (i.e. do they try to jack up ticket prices or something)?

Also - with the board clear out, would be interesting to see if there is a fan representative. I want my foundation member vote!!

It's reported that we sold 37,000 WSW jerseys in our first season.

It's quite possibly we've hit over 100k just in jersey sales at the end of season 2.

If the club support the fantastic terrace culture we have I wouldn't expect a big drop off at all. At the moment buying a jersey makes you feel like you're part of a great community, I have no problem with wanting to show that off. Also most shirts cost $50, may as well buy a great quality one for $90 or $65 when on special. The jersey reminds me of the great times we've had. I alone have spent over $400 on merchandise. Zero regrets.

If the club erode at the community, fail to support the RBB, jack up ticket prices etc. I would expect a big drop off. Ill start coming in casual wear. You wont see me at away games either.

I'm a big believer that won't happen though up in Western Sydney. Melbourne Victory supporters are in a tricky situation, but those poor souls live in AFL land.

Everyone who's jerseys turned pink will be looking to upgrade, by the looks of it Nike have wisely manufactured these jerseys to have a two year life span. Also dyed them with ink that reacts violently with beer, clever f*****s

This happened in Brisbane a number of years ago and only now are Brisbane slowly recovering from the massive backlash they received. ie they alienated their entire fan base by almost doubling their ticket prices and everyone just said "**** this" and left.

scouse_roar could probably offer a better insight.

Prices for the Roar cheap seats went from $176 for 10 matches ($17.60 per match) to $345 for 14 ($24.64 per match). Platinum went from $300 ($30 per match) to $450 ($32 per match, which isn't that much of a price rise per game).

I wouldn't be surprised if there are some minor price rises this season. If we get the same "blockbuster season" draw that we had last year, it would be justified if we have 2 Sydney Derbies.
