  • Western Sydney Wanderers Sold

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers & Football Federation Australia have confirmed the sale of the club to a consortium headed by Pirtek CEO Paul Lederer.

The club, which has been under the ownership of the FFA since it began, will be turned over to the consortium on the 30th of June.

The reported cost is $10 million, lower than the originally estimated 15 and then 12 million figures. This likely is a result of the consortium driving a hard bargain with the FFA, knowing the FFA had to get the asset off their hands to avoid long-term governments implications.

The other three members of the consortium are Jefferson Chang, Glenn Duncan & David Slade, each respected businessmen with an interest in the sport. Lederer has been a director of the club prior to the purchase, and he spoke about the acquisition.

“The spirit of this club comes from the members, fans and the people of Western Sydney. Nothing will change in that regard. I have been a director of the club for the past two years and I’ve had the privilege to play a part and see first-hand what makes this club so special. The consortium has responsibility to ensure the Wanderers have a sound financial base and a strong administration so the club can continue to grow and be successful on and off the field.â€

To renew? I'm happy to pay a reasonable amount, I saw the ESFC prices... yeah nah

Our merch sales are ridiculous in terms of volume moved. I think that well would dry up in a few years (if not for next season).

Would be interesting to see where the new owners take it. (i.e. do they try to jack up ticket prices or something)?

Also - with the board clear out, would be interesting to see if there is a fan representative. I want my foundation member vote!!

Everyone who's jerseys turned pink will be looking to upgrade, by the looks of it Nike have wisely manufactured these jerseys to have a two year life span. Also dyed them with ink that reacts violently with beer, clever f*****s

Hmm, my season 1 jersey is still fine... but I never dropped beer on it so... hmm.

Break even in 2014 is a brilliant result.

There are clubs that have been in the HAL for 10 years and have been in the red the entire time.

I don't think many people realise how massive this is.

In large parts will be down to the 16k members and the thousands of jerseys the club has sold. Probably also the good stadium deal that they negotiated and also the sponsorship $$ that was signed. Wasn't NRMA one of the biggest sponsorship deals ever in the HAL?

To be in the black after 2 years is insane.

We also (I believe) run and fully internally fund our W-League & Youth teams. Even some of the other clubs who have W-League teams don't actually have any connection at all to them, they are just run or paid for by the local federation.

I read somewhere that our ticket prices and memberships are amongst the lowest cost in the League.  If that is correct then it is quite astounding that we have reached profit in our second season.

2vtuwjt.jpg  this got us into profit :xnod:

But Flytox, if he has done such a great job (as we all know he has), why wouldn't the new owners want him kept on?

Salary? Were the FFA paying him too much? New Owners could find someone cheaper?

It just seems as though Lyall was mostly the brains behind our success.

    I'm disappointed he is leaving.

More so than Shinji or Polenz.

    Good players are replaceable.

Good management is harder to find.

Given Gorman had this clause in his contract for a portion of the deal, I'd say he was always leaving when the club was sold....regardless whether he was wanted or not by the new owners

    True Dalison,

But you know only too well how hard it is to find good management......(Eels).

Shame that someone so astute has to go. I don't blame him though with that payout.

**** Gorman. Typical suit. People here have a short memory. He stuffed up ccm support and was crap when he was at the FFA. People are talking like he is a god. Anyone who was at the fan forums know that there was a clear idea of this club, all Gorman had to do was listen to us and it would have been successful. And now he gets a massive payout cos of us fans. Typical suit. And he talks like a politican.

    **** him and de bohun

Nah, he gets a massive payout because that is what was agreed.  Just like our Ono got a shedload of money to play for us.  Why the hate for a guy who had the smarts to get what he had negotiated for?

You do realise that he is not taking anything from the Club, but rather that other institution you dislike.....the FFA..... and probably some other clubs you don't like.

Love him or hate him, he got what he was entitled to.  I just wish I had his job.

he was signed at short notice and could probably ask for anything. Having the majority of his package tied to the end result (from the FFAs perspective) was probably the best way to go at the time, did people really expect us to be so successful, so quick and have such a value.

He deserves his payout on the basis that it was included in his contract and is therefore legally entitled to this money.

What irks people is that it takes money out of the game (even if it's FFA) and goes into the pockets of someone who could well be working for the NRL/AFL next year. It doesn't help he halted some of the negotiations for the sale to put his financial interests ahead of the club.

He is a top businessman, who albeit had failed stints in a number of roles, played the lucky cards he was dealt with WSW. Many of us weren't conned by the letter whipped up by his PR manager, so we knew something like this was expected.

For those who are dumbfounded at why people dislike "suits"; this is it. They see the sport we breathe and bleed for as nothing more than a way to make money. They don't care about the fans (not matter how many nice letters they release).

And no, I still don't hate the bloke. He did mostly well for us, and we can only hope the next person who steps into the role isn't just in it for the money.

I'd rather a CEO who cares only about:

    1) Success on the field.

    2) Financial success off it.

I could care less how much the man is paid in performance bonuses as long as he gets the job done and those salary costs aren't so high as to prevent him from doing those two points. Running a football club, and running this football club, one with the potential of millions of supporters behind it, isn't for someone who does anything for any reason beyond cold hard logic.

Popa doesn't run the football team on emotion, we've seen ample evidence of that. Yet no-one is saying he doesn't care about the fans. Why is Popa different to Gorman? Popa is going to leave at some point, maybe even before his 4 years is up if he has another successful season. And it's not like Popa has done the job for free, he's getting something like $400k a year to run the team and probably has a bunch of bonuses as well.

Tony Sage runs the Glory in a manner "not just for the money" (in fact, he runs the club for love despite his personal monetary losses as owner), and look where that's got him, and Perth as a club post-NSL. Con Constantine did the same in Newcastle, did that get him loved by the fans? Nope, they **** on him constantly while he was still owner of the club, until he went broke. I'm sure he would have loved the money he had poured into the Jets when that happened.

Where has "love for the club" from the ownership got Perth Glory since the A-League began?

    Nowhere.

Where has "love for the club" got Wellington? Go tell me if the Wellington Phoenix wikipedia page as a section for "Honours".

Where did it get North Queensland? Where did it get New Zealand Knights?

Meanwhile WSW have started from scratch, built a Premiership winning club in one season, made the Grand Final in two season, are in the Quarter Finals of the ACL, and are expected to have broken even in just two seasons, when other clubs lose millions every year, without things like having a W-League or Youth league squad or having to sell out to anti-supporter stadiums like Victory do with Etihad.

Gorman might be a suit and he might have screwed up while in charge of other clubs or the league itself, but he's done as good a job as any suit in the history of the A-League has done in running this club in such a good manner that it got sold to a set of new owners and leaves them with a club that is breaking even.

Asking anything from the person who runs the business side of the club other than financial success and setting the club up for as much on-field success as possible is simply a waste of energy at best, and a misguided emotive plea that will distract from the reality of their job at worst.

I understand what angle you're coming from Mack, and for the most part I agree, but I can't help but feel that's quite a leap with those examples you've posted. You've also largely drawn upon one sentence and expanded an entire argument from it, which has taken a lot of what Rodz7 has said well out of context.

What if we could get a great manager whose just doing it for love? That would satisfy both extreme view points. Almost totally unrealistic though lol.

FWIW I refuse to place any money grubbing CEO on some elevated pedestal. Especially when I'd love to see the majority control of the company in the hands of the fans. The elevated pedastal is reserved for the likes of Spiranovic and, yes, Popovic who have the brains to try to control and persuade the spherical ball that pings around the field.

Despite they're suits just like Gorman.

Contracts are confidential, we dont know what players and coaches get as bonuses until they're done and passed either.

Gorman is a suit but he did a good job for what he was hired for. He wasnt hired to be the emotional crutch of WSW, or get players motivated, organise tifos and sell merchandise.

As soon as you get suits involved in that **** goes haywire. Lyall did his mainly boring background business well here. I dont know why people need to bring up past jobs as a sign he is bad at this job, the past few years has proven he did it well.

Yes he moves on with money, but you also get what you pay for. Its how the business market works.

Football clubs have two sides, business and the passion. Its a fact of life now. WSW have solid foundations in both

Telegraph also said Lederer is taking over from Lyall, so hopefully he can continue the good work

A couple points to be made.

    * firstly Football is different form a standard business because there is a high emotional content and attachment from fans.

Treating it as a cold hard business or a franchise will not work. You need to play to the fans emotions to be successful.

Get the fan model right and you get the club model right. The money will come.

    * one of the great falacies in busineas is that to run a business you need logic amd no emotion. All head no heart.

Been what is called a transformational leader (someone who can inspire and create an emotional attachment) has been shown (on average) to be far more affective then been a transactional (goal and procedures) based leader.

Now that ia not to say you dont need clear goals, skills, procedures etc. Offcourse you do. But there is something to be said about having an emotionally engaged leader.

Finally Sage in Perth. Too much on the other extreme as Mack said.

Loves the club but has no expertise and has not surrounded himself with the right people.

He may have authoritative power but he does not have "expert" power and he has not recruited to cater for this weakness.

It's a huge ******* gray area when it comes to Ibrahimovic...

In regards to Perth, Wellington, Newcastle etc, the failure falls on the fans. When we started we had 7000 maybe 7500 averages, when things started ticking a long we had sell out crowds. Merch however was hotter than Bieber tickets, fans splashed the cash and supported a second team in the city in various ways. Perth has one team but they are AFL mad, Wellington has one team but they are Rugby mad, don't get me started on Joeyland. Sydney had every f***ing sport you could name whoring themselves at our back pockets but we were unfazed. As soon as they gave us football back we dove in feet first, with a lot of people putting their GWS membership in the draw

    • The guy is a professional footballer, even playing on a different side to his preferred, the concept of defending doesn’t change. He hardly looked like he was giving it a go. I think all too often we can be so lenient on mistakes made by players across the league. Let’s not forget that they are professionals, they get paid (a bloody decent amount) and should have the skillset required to atleast be able to do a job in a different to preferred position. It’s not like all age, where one week they are banging then in as a striker and then next they’ve got the gloves on as the regular keeper is away with the missus.
