  • Will Wanderers Put FFA Cup Ahead Of All-Stars?

    mack

OPINION: The Western Sydney Wanderers should withdraw any players selected for the novelty A-League All Stars match.

Earlier today the first 6 players were announced for the FFA's money spinning novelty concept the A-League All Stars. The Western Sydney Wanderers were represented by striker Tomi Juric, who won the club golden boot after scoring 9 goals from 25 appearances in his first season at the club, and Australian national team defender Matthew Spiranovic, who guided the club to the Grand Final and ACL Qualification as well as playing all 3 matches for Australia at the World Cup.

The All Stars match this season takes place on Sunday the 10th of August. The Western Sydney Wanderers start their Football Federation Cup campaign only 2 days later, in Adelaide, on the 12th. The All Stars novelty is just that. A novelty. It is a concept designed to do nothing more than fill the coffers of the FFA. It cannot grow A-League clubs, because no A-League club is playing.

The FFA feel that the A-League clubs are a threat to this circus show, and as such have introduced a "fee" to be paid to the FFA in the amount of a quarter of a million dollars in the event one of the A-League clubs can bring a big European team to Australia on tour, such as the extremely successful match between Melbourne Victory & Liverpool FC of England. This is a pathetic attempt to crowd out A-League clubs from carving their own place in the sporting marketplace.

Instead of the Red Devils vs the Blue Randoms last season, I'd have much preferred to be chanting in the RBB for the Wanderers vs Manchester United, instead of sitting 5 rows from the top of ANZ stadium surrounded by people who wanted to know when Ronaldo was coming on.

The idea that the Wanderers could lose their top scorer and a current Australian international player for a real, competitive fixture so that they can play in what is effectively a testimonial match for a marquee player from our city rivals Sydney FC, is a disgrace.

The point of the FFA Cup, at least according to the FFA, is to 'reconnect the grassroots'. Will Adelaide City feel 'reconnected' or respected when the Wanderers show up without key players because they played in a match that means nothing, for a team that isn't the one they face on the 12th of August?

I call upon the Western Sydney Wanderers to immediately withdraw any selected player from the All Stars squad to completely avoid any chance of injury during the Del Piero Tribute match.

I have contacted the club and asked if the Wanderers are considering withdrawing players, and I hope they are.

Update: The Western Sydney Wanderers have responded to my enquiry. Their official statement follows:

The Club won't be making any statements on player withdrawals at this stage.

Even if the above is true, the club should put pressure on the FFA to let our star players (it's our best defender and best striker) play for our club in an important match.

The FFA have now classified their own ballyhooed Cup inferior to a flaccid who cares pre-season exhibition game. How can anyone take the FFA Cup seriously when the FFA doesn't. The guys running that organisation epitomise incompetent idiocy!

Yes, it sucks. Best though to cop it on the chin because the FFA have got control and the club's hands are tied. No disrespect to Adelaide City if we are missing a couple of our best players. It will still be a great game of football regardless (the FFA cup tie-not the all-stars shite.) The Wanderers should win this one. If not, we should offer whatever Adelaide players gave us grief a contract.

Not that big of a deal given that we are playing against a state side in the cup, but what if next year we draw a good A league team instead? I will be pretty peed off if we get knocked out of the cup in the first game due to key players missing.

I usually get a good laugh out of fools posting here how FFA did this or that and **** the FFA, but in this instance i agree that the all stars is a shite concept anyway you look at it and should be scrapped asap.

Do we get compensation from the FFA if one of our boys gets injured?

I hope they pick up minor injuries which prevent them from playing in the all stars only to make a last minute miraculous recovery for the Adelaide game.

Player availability is annoying, I'm sure FFA could have better in scheduling the FFA Cup matches - but for us with the ACL it's kind of tricky.

In terms of the All Stars match, I don't mind it. I would love for a big international team to play Wanderers as well, but why can't we have both?

Seriously, the All Stars match is like the ultimate fantasy football comp, any AL fan wants to see the best players all together in a team. I think it's a cool idea, and it's raising the profile of our sport and league, plus it's giving players international exposure and a great career experience.

This all assumes that we would roll out our top shelf to play Adelaide. Plenty of good quality squaddies could be used and then you don't risk your best players against a state side with ACL just around the corner.

So many choices to make. This is why they pay Popa the big bucks…

The players who will be playing ACL should feature significantly in any lead up matches otherwise they will be even more underdone than they already are i.e. coming from the off-season they all need lots of game time.

It's simple, if I was a player then I would just run around, pull out of all challenges and jut pass the ball around,

It's not the FFA cup that I'm that worried about, what about our champions league quarter finals??

Lobby Gombau to select a second string team so every starter in a HAL club would be available for the FFA Cup.

Also - what happens if there is a breach of contract to not play?

What if our players are injured on day and fine the next?

If you want to have an All-Stars game, at least get the scheduling right...

Yeah, I think this is the real issue for us. In future years it might not matter so much, as we would be unlikely to play our best side anyway. This year though, it is imperative we basically have our starting ACL line up out there in Adelaide.

There was all of the off season (outside of the WC) to schedule both the All Stars match and the FFA cup, and yet they are two days apart! How hard is it? I guess the original plan was for us to play on the 19th, but still, our ACL campaign should have been considered by the FFA. Clearly it wasn't.

this is cause last year lots of players pulled out and said they were not or could not play. I remember an ex player of ours quoting to me '' if i get injured i have to make my own way to the physio and then try to recover and gain my place back in my club team, and what for? just a glorified friendly which has no impact on my club or my contract obligations towards my club/team!

This. Players in all sports pull out of meaningless fixtures with "injuries" all the time. Look at the NRL with their meaningless City-Country clash. 30 pull out with injuries, and they are all back on the park for their clubs the next week. This is the easiest way around it. Spira and Juric should just say they have violent diaorrhea. No-one will check.

What we must do is ensure nobody we know goes anywhere near these stupid all stars games.

If you know anyone thinking about going you need to convince them this sucks balls

By the way, why is it that this game is, as so eloquently described by WSWBroro as:

    just an ESFC ADP wankfest

why then is it being hyped like some kind of amazing event when the host broadcaster (that freind of 'sokkah', the Seven Network) has consigned its broadcasting to the 7Mate channel?

Surely to **** if the FFA are going to invest all the PR and BS in such an 'ESFC ADP wankfest' they should get prime time free to air main channel broadcast slots, otherwise **** it off.

Oh wait, ADP is still seen by some of the doofuses in this country as some kind of messiah for the local game, even when the twat has been pissed off by the smurfs.

Meanwhile, Adelaide have Malaga and Wellington have got a round robin...please ***** explain?

Why wouldn't you use A-league clubs?

A-league All Stars is cringeworthy and it indicates to the rest of the world our own Governing body doesnt take our own league seriously.

You play the Wanderers, ESFC or whoever you will not only be showcasing the A-league, you will acually have a better atmosphere which will be a great advertisment to draw future fans to the game (more so then the current spectacle which just encourages one off fans) and you will have a more competitive team on the field.

But that probably makes too much sense of the FTFFA.

What worries me is that this is a MLS concept, why are we copying the Yanks in football????
