I like goal against ESFC better, clearly shows them how much of a fool they are. 2 tall defender couldn't even stop a floating ball against someone small in both height and physique.

I like the ESFC goal. I mean... the guy bounces it off his knee/thigh and it magically sits up so he could volley home.

But then again, it is Shinji so it's not magic. That's just skill.

Although he's had many moments of brilliance, it's quite evident that his body just can't keep up anymore. Paying all that money for a player that can't play for 90 minutes and gets injured so often just doesn't seem to be worth it anymore.

I think one of the main reasons we originally bought him was to bring in the fans, but we don't a marquee for that anymore.

If Tim Cahill is dead serious about buying into the wanderers and becoming a part of us, then I say that we go get him, and keep Shinji as a backup option

lol..it's more about his body not being able to keep up with the intense training that Popa reinforces on the team, rather then ability. 

Yeah one game coming off early is a bit soon to call it in on this guy

He won a few games last year with his brilliance and I am sure he will do so Again this season

He is what 34? And given his past he spend many seasons with unfortunate injuries i'd say he has a fair bit left in the tank

Happy to keep Shinji as long as he wants to be under the cap, and not on marquee wages, so we can use that money to lure in another big name ideally.

Saw him stretch for a ball in the warmup and immediately grab his groin. Knew it was fairly serious immediately and then when he spent the next 5 minutes stretching it... What's the deal with injuries in warmup? Are we allowed to change the tea sheet or do we need to lose a sub? Or use a sub before the match?

I think if you do that, it counts as a substitution.

Also I dunno... Shinji is very good - but I don't think he's as injury prone as zelge makes him out to be. He's all class. Will we have to manage him better? Perhaps - but... he's still very, very good.

Popa will probably move Mooy up into Ono's position at 10 and play Poljak and La Rocca as holding midfielders so we should be ok there.

We definitely need to manage him better. He is an awesome fit for our team but our high octane and high work rate approach is always going to have an effect on more senior players, no matter who they are. If we can manage Shinji for 60-70 mins a match I would be happy with that for the next couple of years.

I was thinking Popa was managing him fine. Okay, so he has a groin strain that is a 50/50 for recovery by this weekend, but Popa is holding him back. He didn't start in our opener against the Mariners (which we all recall was a bloody hot day) and as far as I can recall has not completed a full 90+ minutes in any game between then and now. Having said that I agree 100% with the need to have him available for 60-70 minutes as often as possible.

Sorry Manfred poor choice of words on my part. Popa is doing a fine job of managing him and his minutes. Anyone can pick up a knock at any point in a game. I think people just need to expect this pretty much every game, Shinji coming off at the 60-70th minute. I think if we want Shinji at his best and most productive for a few more years this is the way it has to be. There is always the temptation to play him for longer periods and this is when you can get yourself in trouble.

That's fine, but you will find that more than likely him and his agent wont be able to come to terms when they look at securing his next contract. I am sure they can come to some sort of arrangement but there are plenty of clubs especially in China who would pay double what he is on currently. That's just the reality of the player market.

Intriguing point (though I disagree with it)...the value of a marquee in terms of actual playing time is always going to be a concern when they get to the age of someone like Shinji with the vulnerability to injuries increasing (or as has been shown this season alone with ADP, Gallas, Heskey, Ongelaar and arguably Berisha). However if you contrast those 5-10 minutes spurts of pure genius someone like Shinji can and does inject into games versus the far more workmanlike and less expensive efforts of say a Mark Bridge or an Aaron Mooy, then the o/s older marquee concept still has great value.

Ultimately like any part of a squad's make-up the o/s marquee has to demonstrate their worth not just on but also off the pitch. Of the big three I'd argue Ono has been the most worthy,with ADP behind him and Heskey still under-value. 

I thought I heard shinji say he wants to end his career with us. Let's show him the same level of respect. Especially after all he did for us last season.
