Personally I could never hate Youssouf, as every ex-Wanderers player who has come into our squad and then moved on (like Tarek or Rocky or especially Dino) have done what they thought best for their careers, and everyone does that in their own lives. I can however find an even deeper wellspring of hate and loathing for the self-entitled moneybag scum of ESFC who would take the corporate raider approach of buying whoever they can afford to hopefully make their own activities more profitable, but would in a second throw their acquisition in the shitter just to spite the previous club if Hersi didn't work out.

Love the player, hate the ESFC pudendas

Smithies yarn is one of the biggest 500 word dribbles Ive read in ages. Quotes the player from last month and nothing from the club. The reality is he’s off contract at the end of the season so being a player of quality I doubt there’d be a club in the A-league that wouldn’t be asking the question. Tom get off your arse and get a real story. In case you didn't realise tonight it's a top of the table clash, maybe you could have pumped that up instead of serving up the obvious rubbish that is in the Tele today.

Even if Smithies article is true I don't know how anyone can hate on Hersi. The guy obviously loves playing at WSW and he has made it clear he wants a 2 year deal. I cant see anything wrong with asking for a 2 year contract. I think we need to be asking the question, Why doesn't the club want to sign him for 2 more years? If any club offered him a 2 year deal I think he would be seriously looking into it. Whose fault is that?

^^^yes just sign him up already, give him 2 years we'll worth it despite his injury concerns. If he did leave because club didn't look after him that would be sickening to see him in sky blue or any other A-league club.

Yeah hes saying he wants a new deal but do you think he also doesnt want a pay rise? I'm sure if he was asking for the same wage they'd extend it right away.

Did not travel with team to wullingtun despite training all week.

Freak, it's been like 5 weeks for Heri's injury!

So Popa is hiding Hersi too?!  :ninja:

WTF is going on? I wanna believe all is compos mentis but it seems highly suss that a guy who is so crucial to our team is yet again being left out after what was supposed to be only a one or maybe two week injury.

The initial reports on the 2 week injury were mind games. Every week the opposition were hearing "he'll be fit to play" and expend energy on working out tactical options against him. Juric will probably get the same treatment for a couple weeks before he returns.

Popa might not play outright 'mind games' like Graham Arnold has (ie, crying in the media about other teams/ffa) but he definitely uses the media, the dissemination of false information and/or a lack of information on certain topics to improve his chances of winning.

Hersi update 29/11

http://www.goal.com/en-sg/news/3952/asia/2013/11/29/4441213/popovic-wanderers-plotting-instant-response

Finally, Popovic offered an update on Youssouf Hersi's foot problem, with the livewire winger's absence now stretching several weeks beyond his original expected return date.

"It's still a day-to-day proposition with Youssouf," he said.

"It's probably been frustrating for him and frustrating for us. He has a good day's training with the group and then he pulls up a bit sore. On Wednesday he trained well, today's a new day and we've got to see how he goes.

"And that's pretty much how we're playing it with him, just day by day. And go with how the player feels. If he feels he's ready to go, he's ready to go. And if not, we just leave him for another week."

Yeah my son was stoked he took time out legend as long as he doesn't sign for Esfc heard rumour from sh.it source he has officially agreed terms and have given wsw till end of year to match it

Link to comment

the trouble is, at what cost. we know he is vital for the team, but if the opposition are offering crazy money then you just have to let him go. No point in matching a crazy contract figure and then having no depth through the squad due to lack of funds.

Thinking about this a bit more, so what if they bid for him in January - he is contracted till end of the season.

So he may sign with them in Jan, but he will still be our player until the end of the season.

Only way he could be allowed to leave in Jan would be on the basis of a transfer fee.

Hopefully he stays as that Hersi & Polenz combo is the best right hand side in the league by a long mile.

Talk about being stuck on the horns of a dilemma, without having all the facts to give anyone an informed position to really comment with any accuracy.

Way I see it is assuming, and this is the big assumption, his manager and himself are not asking for such a contract that would require either a chunk being taken away from the overall squad's budget and/or commitments to a length of contract that would preclude either youth development in the same position and/or potential overseas acquisitions, then give him what he needs. We all know how good, nay vital the likes of Shinji, Jerome, Tomi, Nikolai and Ante are but if you were to find that one player who really gives us the spark we need week in and week out, it's Hersi. As has been said repeatedly the options he gives us in both attack and defence on the right flank are amazing and he also has an uncanny sense of when to come into the centre or even drift to the opposite flank. If he wasn;t prone to some stupid discipline issues he would be our no.1 player par excellence.

Of course all the assumptions about what a new contract will require have to be balanced against both re his positive influence on the team as well as the potential negatives. Throw in whatever contractual arrangements and how they may require some kind of verification/approval from any future buyer of the Wanderers it all gets murky. Then there is the tactical longevity of the squad...can Popa keep hersi as a fulcrum of both our attack and defence for yet another season without exposing us to more familiarity from the other teams? Since he came back from hbis foot injury there has been even more eager marking (dare I say hacking) of Youssouf, and if Popa retains him as a central player he runs the risk of limiting our options in the future. Throw in the cultivation of Appiah-Kubi as a mini-Hersi and perhaps the thinking may be 2014/15 might be a season too far for YH.

Bottom line, the fans would be pretty dirty if he is let go and goes to another club (particularly ESFC), however everyone has to understand that we can't stay static as a squad and as a club. If results continue to be good without him in the future then (and I hate to say this) all the Hersi love will lose some lustre.

You can only transfer between a league clubs if out of contract or released. No such thing as a transfer fee between the clubs. Although maybe we could trade them for Goodwin and someone else.

I reckon if he gets the security of a 2 year deal elsewhere, and we boys aren't willing to show him the same respect, I have no problem with him walking to give himself a more secure future. Would hate to see him go he's already a black and red legend but fairs fair he's got to think about his family and etcs.

Of course Youssouf has to think first about himself, his family and career but I don't get where this issue of equating an extended contract shows respect. The Wanderers and the club's devotees will only give respect and loyalty for what any player (no matter how good or famous they are) does on the pitch.Respect is not to be doled out as some kind of trade for a few added zeros on his paycheck or a year or two more on his contract.

In fact taking an honest and frank approach to the contract negotiations is the best way to show respect to Hersi; If the value of retaining him is less than that of finding a replacement isn't it better we let him go and move on? That's happened with the likes of Dino, Rocky, Joey and Tarek. If Hersi's prospective value demands the club to retain him at the affordable cost then yes, do it.

No way in hell Popa would let Hersi leave in January. End of the season it's out of our control if he wants to go, but Newcastle are dreaming if they think they could get that quality mid-season in the A-League. The only reasons people leave in January

1. They're crap enough to have a request to be released granted

2. Their contract runs out at the end of the season, so the club gets any transfer fee they can before they have to let them go on a free

3. The club is offered an astronomical amount of money

Seeing as a-League clubs aren't allowed to pay for transfers from other a-League clubs (and don't have the money too), 2 and 3 are ruled out. And Hersi clearly doesn't fit into option 1. Therefore Necastle are dreaming.

They only way I could even think of this happening was if Popa decided Hersi wasn't up to the rigours of the ACL and wanted to make squad room for someone that is. But seeing as we already have an unused foreigner spot still left there's not even that benefit to letting him go, and Popa would surely release someone who's not one of our best players.
