Western Sydney Wanderers v Marconi Stallions, 3pm, Sunday 25 June, Marconi Stadium

Western Sydney Wanderers host Marconi Stallions at Marconi Stadium this Sunday in a clash between two sides that were earlier this season considered certainties to contest the Grand Final.

But so much has changed since then. Marconi has opened up a handy seven-point lead at the top of the table, while the young Wanderers have taken home the spoils just once in their last seven matches.

The Wanderers still play a scintillating brand of football and they almost always dominate possession and chances created. But they're struggling where it counts the most - on the scoreboard.

Granted, like fellow A-League academy side Central Coast Mariners, Western Sydney's motivation isn't purely results-based; it's based on development and performance. Development of young players with ambitions of playing professional football and performance within a framework imposed by the club's head coach Tony Popovic.

There's no doubt that they're succeeding in these areas, with the likes of Keanu Baccus, Abraham Majok and Nicholas Suman recently signing first grade contracts, while Mario Shabow, Liam Youlley and Jackson Bandiera have moved on, seeking their fame and fortune elsewhere.

Coach Trevor Morgan is renowned for turning young talent into gold and he's not afraid to give 15 and 16-year-olds an opportunity to experience the harsh realities of a senior men’s' league that can be both physical and uncompromising. On many occasions this season Morgan's charges have left the field battered and bruised, courtesy of opponents willing to do anything to stop the youngsters from playing to their full potential. And while this approach has worked on occasion, fourth-placed Western Sydney remain a threat to the new order. They're just too talented and too professional not to.

Meanwhile, new Marconi coach Peter Tsekenis seems to have found the answer to making the Stallions a more determined, selfless bunch; with consistency and renewed confidence responsible for the Stallions' recent run of good form.

Despite losing to Central Coast a few weeks ago, Marconi have since been humming a winning tune, watching from their lofty perch as those below them battle one another for a place in the top four.

The likes of Michael Beauchamp, Sean Rooney, Mirjan Pavlovic and Marko Jesic look satisfied and content. They look energetic, focused and happy, which wasn't always the case during the first round. These guys have the ability to blow away anyone without a second glance and when they're hot, they're irresistible.

This will be an intriguing clash between two talented sides whose goals and aspirations are poles apart. Both obviously have a desire to win, that's fundamental to competitive sport, but regardless of the result, the Wanderers will continue to develop while Marconi will continue on their single-minded pursuit of Premiership honours and promotion. May the best team win.

NPL Preview: Wanderers vs Marconi

Friday, 23 June 2017 -

The Western Sydney Wanderers will be hoping to build on their solid performance last round this Sunday afternoon when they take on Marconi Stallions at Marconi Stadium.

The Stallions are currently leading the NPL 2 and are seven points clear of second-placed Northern Tigers.

Meanwhile, the Wanderers will start the weekend in fifth position and are ten points behind Sunday's opponent.

The Marconi squad features eight players with Hyundai A-League experience, most notably inaugural Wanderers captain Michael Beauchamp.

Marconi forward Sean Rooney is currently the top scorer in the NPL 2 with 16 goals to his name. The Stallions have plenty of attacking firepower with Mirjan Pavlovic and Marko Jesic also contributing this season with six goals each.

Jordan Hall joined the Wanderers last week after previously playing for Melbourne City. The defender was named in the starting side in his first match for the club and put in an impressive performance at centre-back.

Despite spending the last couple of seasons interstate, Hall is a Western Sydney local, having played his junior football at Blacktown City.

Mathieu Cordier also put in another impressive effort in last week's clash. After suffering ten months on the sidelines due to injury last year, Cordier has regained his spot in the team, starting regularly at left-back.

When these two teams met back in Round 4 they played out a very entertaining game with the score settling at 2-2. Emmanuel Gonzalez and Oliver Puflett got onto the scoresheet for the Red & Black that night.

Entry into the match is FREE for all Wanderers Members. Tickets for non-Members are $10 for Adults and $5 for concession card holders.

NPL Wrap: Wanderers go down to Marconi

Monday, 26 June 2017 -

The Western Sydney Wanderers have lost 3-0 in the NPL 2 to league leaders Marconi Stallions on Sunday afternoon at Marconi Stadium.

Goals from Judah Cleur, Sean Rooney and Mirjan Pavlovic secured the win for the former National Soccer League giants with the result seeing the Wanderers remain fifth on the NPL 2 table.

The match began at a frantic pace with Marconi's experienced outfit putting plenty of pressure on the young Wanderers defenders.

The Wanderers slowly began to assert themselves after a dangerous cross from Mohamed Najjar saw Kyle Cimenti almost get on the end of it before Marconi keeper Nenand Vekic was able to palm the ball to safety.

Matthew Lecce went on a fantastic run that saw him beat two defenders only for his shot to roll wide of the goal.

However, Marconi were able to withstand the pressure and opened the scoring just before the half-hour with a close range header from Cleur.

Soon it would be 2-0 to Marconi with former Newcastle forward Sean Rooney scoring with a shot from inside the box.

The Wanderers responded and Lecce got into the Marconi box after another mazy run that saw him crowded out by the defenders.

It was end-to-end play at this stage and Wanderers goalkeeper Mackenzie Syron made a good one-on-one save just before the interval to keep the score at 2-0.

The second half saw Marconi throw everything at the Red & Black to try and kill the game off. But the Wanderers defence stood tall by blocking multiple shots.

Jordan Hall made a notable save in the box to prevent Marko Jesic from having a goalscoring opportunity.

The onslaught from Marconi continued but the Wanderers backline did well to prevent former Wellington Phoenix player Troy Danaskos from getting a shot away in the six-yard box.

Syron also made a couple of good saves to prevent Marconi from extending their lead.

With under 15 minutes left in the clash, Tariq Maia went agonisingly close to pulling a goal back for the Wanderers, but his free kick was cleared off the line.

Another goal line clearance followed after Emmanuel Gonzalez set up Cimenti with another good chance.

It was not to be the Wanderers day and two minutes before full time Pavlovic made it 3-0 to Marconi.

After a draw in U18s and a loss in U20s, the Red & Black have dropped to third in the NPL 2 Club Championship.

Next weekend the Wanderers will play against Blacktown Spartans at Blacktown Football Park on Sunday 2 July. Kick-off is at 3pm.
