Italy great Fabio Cannavaro will be visiting Sydney for a short time in May and will be presented to football fans in Italy's spiritual hub of Sydney, Norton Street, Leichhardt on Saturday May 4.

The FIFA World Cup-winning defender who enjoyed a stellar club career which included a stint alongside Sydney FC's Alessandro del Piero at Juventus is Italy's most capped player and won two Coppa Italia's as well as two La Liga titles to go with his World Cup; however it is his list of honours as an individual though which is truly astonishing.

A brilliant defender, Cannavaro had a stellar career, but 2006, which coincided with Italy lifting the World Cup was truly his year, and in it he won the Ballon d'Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year.

Leichhardt Council is helping to bring Cannavaro to Leichhardt to meet his local fans, with a ceremony expected at 12pm, fans are advised to arrive by 11:30am.

Mayor of Leichhardt Cr Darcy Byrne said that Council was proud to offer the soccer giant honorary citizenship of Leichhardt.

"Leichhardt is famous internationally as Australia's Little Italy so it is only right that we are bringing the icon of Italian football here,†he said.

"This is a unique opportunity for local families, the football community and the Italian diaspora to witness a sporting superstar in action. Making Fabio an honorary citizen of Leichhardt will strengthen the bonds of friendship between our community and the people of Italy."
