    Brisbane Roar

Brisbane Roar are the second in the Season 2012/13 A-League team preview series.

Pre-season ownership speculation was resolved with the takeover of the Indonesian Bakrie group. The Champions of 2011-12 were unbeaten for the first 8 games of the season which gave them a record breaking 36 game unbeaten run. Berisha was the A-League Golden Boot Winner with 19 goals. For the majority of last season the Roar were the team to beat. Their attractive possession based mixed with high pressing, ruthlessness in front of goal and a culture of winning instilled by manager Ange Postecoglou to propel the team to their second A-League championship in a row.

Postecoglou has not remained to attempt a third title win, leaving for Melbourne Victory mere days after the Grand Final triumph. In his place Assistant Manager Rado Vidošić was promoted to the top job. Their first foray into the Asian Champions League ended without the Roar picking up a single victory. They drew 3 and lost 3 to crash out in the Group Stage.

Backup keeper Redmayne, out of favour foreigner Nakajima-Farran and Matt Mundy were released. Sayed Mohamed Adnan declined to renew his contract and moved to Bahrain to re-unite with his family. Kofi Danning was transferred to C.S. Vise who are one of the Bakrie stable of clubs.

Ben Halloran joined the club from the ruins of Gold Coast United, Matt Acton was promoted to the first team to replace Redmayne as the backup keeper, Do Dong-Hyan of South Korea and Yuji Takahashi of Japan filled the foreign slots left open by the loss of Adnan and Farran.

More important than these signings was key playmaker Thomas Broich, exciting winger Henrique, Michael 'Theo', Matt Smith, Shane Stefanutto and Ivan Franjic all re-signing new contracts. Broich is the conductor of the Brisbane attack, a creative outlet that can turn a game on it's head with one pass. Berisha is called a goal poacher but that does not pay him enough tribute for his tireless work rate, his passion for football and his darting intelligent runs off the ball that let him score seemingly simple tap-ins. If Rado as a manager can keep up with the level of talent his players have then the Roar could go back to back to back and win a record third A-League championship.

The Roar face a tough start to their A-League campaign as they take on Perth Glory in what is sure to be an intense atmosphere in Perth. They follow that match by hosting the Postecoglou managed Melbourne Victory. The difficult Wellington away fixture will provide a measuring stick. The form and results taken from those three matches will impact on the home matches against Wanderers and Adelaide.

The big question is can Rado Vidošić keep the so called 'Roarcelona' playing style going? Will he be able to stamp his own personality onto the squad? What will that personality be? Postecoglou drove a never say die mentality in the soul of his football team, does Rado Vidošić have the same strength of will?

This season for the Roar will hinge on the success of their new manager. The Bakrie group will not tolerate failure for very long, Rado is my tip for being the first managerial casualty this season.

I predict that Brisbane will finish the season in 3rd position.

    1. Perth Glory
    2. Central Coast Mariners
    3. Brisbane Roar
    4. Melbourne Victory
    5. Wellington Phoenix

    7. Western Sydney Wanderers
    8. Newcastle Jets

    Adelaide United

Adelaide United is the first in the WestSydneyFootball.Com Season 2012/13 A-League team preview series.

Last year was an abysmal showing for a team that many predicted to go all the way to the Grand Final. They sold key attacking midfielder Marcos Flores to Henan Jianye for a reported fee of $500,000 but added Dario Vidosic as their Australian Marquee and declared the squad had been strengthened across the board. What followed were mixed results from their first 3 matches before a 7-1 thrashing at the hands of the 31 game unbeaten Brisbane Roar team set the tone for their campaign.

Wins were few and far between. The lack of success cost Rini Coolen his job as Manager after losing a home match against the lowly Gold Coast. Under newly appointed ex-manager John Kosmina the Reds threatened a brief revival during the holiday season but that soon faded away, taking only one victory from their last thirteen matches to finish 9th only 4 points ahead of now defunct Gold Coast United.

One major positive was their continued good form in the Asian Champions League, where they progressed from group E on top, and despatched Nagoya Grampus 1-0 at home.

    cassio1.jpg
Usucar, Ricardo and Levchenko all left the club giving Adelaide their foreign positions back. Mark Birighitti quit the club for Newcastle Jets after suffering from a lack of game time. The club sold two players to China. Milan Susak was sold to Tianjin Teda for an estimated fee of $200,000. Daniel Mullen moved to Dalian Aerbin for $240,000.

To replace those losses Iain Fyfe moved in from South Korea, Daniel Bowles and Barker-Daish rose from the ashes of Gold Coast United. Teeboy Kamara was promoted to the full squad but has subsequently suffered a mysterious illness that will stop him playing indefinitely. Foreign spots were taken by the introductions of 29 year old Marcelo Carrusca and 26 year old Jerónimo Morales, both from Argentina. The final position was filled by 23 year old Portuguese ex-Chelsea youth product Fabio Ferreira.

    svd1.jpg
Sergio van Dijk has reportedly been unsettled at the club but will need to be utilised effectively by Kosmina if the club is going to win matches. Bruce Djite could be preferred up front and at 25 years old this is his time to make a mark on the competition. Vidosic, Ramsay and Cassio will spearhead the transition and midfield zones and if they can stay fit the club will present a clear and present danger on the counter-attack. With defensive stocks not improved Galekovic has to lead from the back.

Adelaide are a club that have kept a stable first choice line-up for some time now but are still suspect defensively. John Kosmina will keep his players motivated, which is something that will help in their ACL campaign. There are questions on his ability to gain tactical advantage over rival coaches and with his squad management over the entire season. I believe they will rely too heavily on their midfield for goals and their defense will continue to leak goals.

The season proper for Adelaide kicks off earlier than the other teams as they face a home/away Asian Champions League Quarter-Final tie against Bunyodkor of Uzbekistan.

The fixture list for Adelaide gives them a mixed bag of difficulty in their opening matches. An away trip to Newcastle is first, followed by their home debut against the Wanderers. The Melbourne Victory grudge match will be one of the travelling highlights of the season for their fans. Wellington at home and Roar away will seriously test their finals credentials. Adelaide will need to convert more draws into 3 points to stand a chance of finals contention and the club, players and supporters will expect nothing less a finals appearance. I do not share that optimism. The club is treading water and will need a cleaning out at the end of the season.

I predict that Adelaide United will again finish the season in 9th position.

    1. Perth Glory
    2. Central Coast Mariners
    3. Brisbane Roar
    4. Melbourne Victory
    5. Wellington Phoenix
    6. Sydney FC
    7. Western Sydney Wanderers
    8. Newcastle Jets
    9. Adelaide United
    10. Melbourne Heart
