WestSydneyFootball.Com Round 7 Review
This battle of two cellar dwellers went to the home side as Brisbane Roar put on a team play masterclass, while Del Piero put on a finishing one. After forcing mistakes with high pressing, Berisha missed a glorious chance from point blank range. Broich opened the scoring with a long range cross from a free kick that sailed over everyone and found the back of the net. Partaluu extended the lead with his second effort after hitting the keeper with a header.
Del Piero FC pulled a goal back when Del Piero got sick of his incompetent team-mates, teeing himself up from 25 yards and cracking it past Roar keeper Theo. Just as it looked like Del Piero FC would go into the break with momentum the ball fell to Ben Halloran who side footed a shot from outside the area that crept in at the far post.
Del Piero FC again pulled a goal back when Del Piero strode through the Roar central defence before putting a move on that left Theo stranded. Berisha closed out the game with a stunning run, beating three Del Piero FC defenders before his powerful finish rippled the net.
Melbourne Heart would be disappointed with their 1-0 loss in Adelaide when they looked to be the better team for the early parts of both halves. Early in the match Simon Colosimo spent a long time off the pitch when he bled for the cause after a corner kick scramble where several players collided and went down. Thompson had a good chance 10 minutes in with a nice one-two play but skied his chance. Another corner for the Reds resulted in poor clearance being returned with interest, but the shot was straight at Clint Bolton. Colosimo gifted Adelaide a chance but Jeronimo couldn't get it past Bolton.
Dario Vidosic went close with a long range free kick. Jeronimo finally broke the deadlock as the Heart backed off. On the edge of the Penalty D he unleashed a shot, Colosimo got a foot to the ball and the deflection completely wrong footed Bolton and sailed gently over the line. Heart couldn't find an equaliser and are now in 9th position.
A tremendous game that had everything a football match could ask for. Great goals, red cards all over the place, youth making an impression and a tactical battle fit for any league in the world. Archie Thompson was absent for the Victory due to a virus. The Mariners came into the game with 3 wins in a row, Victory off the back of their 3-2 triumph over Del Piero FC. Daniel McBreen drew first blood for the visiting Mariners, Sterjovski breaking down the left before finding McBreen with the first touch, McBreen finished the difficult chance excellently.
Andrew Nabbout quickly hit back for Melbourne, Rojas who was dangerous all night, provided a cross that Nabbout headed home. With 20 minutes on the clock the Mariners took the lead, that man McBreen again, running onto a long-ball before turning Franjic inside out and finishing with aplomb. 5 minutes before half-time Mark Milligan had the Victory level after being left completely unmarked by the Mariners defence at a free kick.
Patrick Zwaanswijk was handed a second yellow card followed by a red after he lead with the elbow. Victory piled pressure onto the Mariners but found no way through the massed ranks of yellow shirts. With time ebbing away Victory talisman Marcos Flores also received his marching orders for a stupid challenge which earned him a second yellow and then the red. The Mariners will be the happier of the two teams and the Victory will be without Flores for their clash against Western Sydney.
What started out as a dour, boring game where commentator Mike Cockerill's raspy voice was the main draw eventually evolved into a surprise win for Wellington. 30 minutes of boredom and fouling was broken by a chance to Wellington then Neville working Phoenix keeper Mark Paston. Emile Heskey couldn't navigated the ball through the ranks of the Wellington defence. Just minutes before half-time ex-Jets player Jeremy Brockie chested a cross from Ifill down and side footed for his goal, with no offside flag to rescue the Jets from going behind.
Mark Birighitti had his jaw smashed by Brockie after making a brave save in a one on one situation. He was substituted and will have surgery later this week. Brockie took his brace well, bad defending by the Jets allowed him to loop a header over the keeper for 2-0. Late in the match Wellington had Ifill scoring a penalty that really should have also been punished with a straight red card, and Totori had the miss of the season thus far, making a wonderful run that tore apart the Jets defence only to miss the open but slightly narrow goalmouth or an unmarked team-mate waiting in the centre.
A full report is listed here. Western Sydney pulled off a heroic 1-0 ten-man victory against grand finalists Perth Glory in Perth. Shane Smeltz was absent from the Glory lineup due to a personal issue. The Wanderers opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Aaron Mooy retrieved a wayward corner before lofting it back into the centre. Defensive Midfielder Iacopo La Rocca rose ahead of the pack, attacking the ball and planting it past Glory keeper Vukovic. The red card was received by Youssouf Hersi after he lashed out at Scott Jamieson in retaliation to having his ankles targeted by a very poor challenge. The referee appeared to view a replay on the big screen at the ground against FIFA regulations before giving out the red.
At half-time Popovic reshuffled his lineup by replacing Trifiro with Shannon Cole, moving to a 4-4-1 Formation. Perth Glory laid siege to the Wanderers goal but were unable to get past goalkeeping colossus Ante Covic who made several full stretch diving saves to pick up Man of the Match honours. The Glory hit the post from McGarry and the crossbar. The final moments had Adrian Zahra make what would have been the miss of the season from 3 yards out, saved only by being a mile offside. The Wanderers holding out for a heroic victory.
