Tomi Juric has destroyed Adelaide United in a second blitz to propel the Wanderers into first place on the A-League ladder.
The Wanderers were being broadcast on free to air television for the first time in their history and they and Adelaide United produced a cracking second game well worth the occasion.
Western Sydney went into the match with star players Mateo Poljak who suffered a quad strain on the morning of the match, and Youssouf Hersi as a result of foot bruising sustained as a result of a Sydney FC stomp on him during the 2-0 win in the Sydney Derby. Adelaide United welcomed back Jeronimo Neumann from a short injury layoff.
After a bruising but score-less first half it was Neumann who started the attack that broke the deadlock. Cutting in from the left hand side he took a shot that deflected off a Wanderers defender. It fell into the path of Marcelo Carrusca, his run frozen Covic on the spot. Even though it was likely that Neumann's shot was heading goal ward, Carrusca touched it with his leg and made sure of the goal. Western Sydney appealed in vain for what would have been an incorrect penalty shout.
Going behind lifted Western Sydney and it was Tomi Juric who responded. After Adelaide lost possession deep in the Wanderers half Aaron Mooy started a counter that went through Bridge, Ono and Bridge again. Releasing Juric, the young striker cut inside ex-Wanderer Tarek Elrich before unleashing a rocket that had Eugene Galekovic beaten all ends up. It nestled into the top corner and from there it looked like the match would only have one winner, and it was the team who had Black alongside the colour Red.
With 11 minutes in regulation time to play, Jerome Polenz cut back onto his unfavoured left foot and delivered a glorious cross to the back post. Juric had made a brilliantly timed run that left Elrich for dead and the Socceroo striker slammed it into the bottom left corner. Juric jumped the advertising hoardings in front of the RBB and celebrated with the rest of the team.
Adelaide weren't able to generate a comeback of their own. The Wanderers winning 2-1, their first ever victory after conceding the first goal of the game, and their first ever win without Youssouf Hersi in the team.
The next Wanderers match is against Melbourne Heart on Friday the 9th of November at AAMI Park. Kick-off is 7:30PM.
