  • Wanderers Win 1-0 In Newcastle

    mack

Mark Bridge looped the ball over the head of Mark Birighitti to give the Wanderers all three points in their away trip to Newcastle overnight.

In front of a crowd of 16,634 that included a large contingent of away supporters it was Newcastle captain Ruben Zadkovich who had the first chance of the game. A flick-on from Adam Taggart broke the Wanderers central defensive line, Zadkovich shot past the diving Nikolai Topor-Stanley, but his shot was weak and Wanderers keeper Ante Covic turned the ball away with his left foot.

The Jets were on top for the opening half-hour but couldn't get their dominance to pay dividends. Like so many times before in football, it was the team who could withstand pressure who took the lead.

Newcastle failed to clear their lines, Aaron Mooy spread the ball wide to Shinji Ono. The Japanese international delivered a perfect cross over to the far post toward Labinot Haliti who took advantage of his opposing number misreading the flight of the ball to nod it back across the face of goal to the back post. Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti looked to come and claim the ball but he faltered and baulked, allowing Mark Bridge the easiest of headed tap-ins into a gaping net. Newcastle appealed in vain for both a foul from Haliti & an offside from Mark Bridge, neither were warranted or forthcoming.

Western Sydney held the lead until half-time and for the rest of the match. Newcastle applied pressure late on but weren't able to force a clear opening, while the Wanderers were unable to land a knockout 2nd goal.

Jaushua Sotirio was named in the match day squad for Western Sydney and he made his debut coming on for Youssouf Hersi in the 77th minute.

The win put the Wanderers 4 points clear of the chasing pack comprised of Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory & Newcastle, although Sydney FC defeated Melbourne Heart on Sunday to bridge the gap between the two Sydney sides to 1 point. Brisbane remain firmly ensconced in 1st place with a 5 point lead.

The Wanderers next match is on Monday the 23rd of December, 7:00PM against the Central Coast Mariners at Parramatta Stadium.

had a busy week this week but really wanted to share this story from the game last week......

I went along with a couple of cousins and an uncle as a big part of my extended family are newy based and jets fans. We were joined by a bunch of their mates so it was about 10 jets fans to me, my 8 year old and my old man in our group. the plan was to all sit together somewhere in the jets general support. hilariously, my uncle accidentally bought tickets in the Away non active section!

Anyway we all file in to our seats with the cousins and friends getting strange looks and a few comments (all in fun nothing nasty) from our fans as a few had jets gear on. The game kicks on and we go ahead. My young bloke starts giving it to my cousin after the goal which was all good until the whole section we are in realises what he is doing and starts cheering him on a breaking out in laughter every time he yells at my cousin - it was like he was doing a stand up show with every line getting louder and louder approval from the gallery!

By the end of the game my little bloke was running across the concourse bit in front of our seats, shirt off and heckling my cousin and all of his mates. At the final whistle they couldn't get out fast enough as my son soaked up the applause and high-fives from an appreciative gallery. brilliant stuff!

was a big one mate - train from gunnedah but was worth it. funny story from the train too was that a couple of the state rail blokes on there were big wanderers fans and just took a seat next to us and talked for about 15 minutes on all things wanderers much to the bemusement of the country folk on the train who must have been very worried that 4 wanderers fans together must surely lead to a sokkah riot!
