Messinese Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 I'm a huge F1 fan and I usually make the trip down to Melbourne for the race. I'm a big Ferrari fan so I'm hoping Alonso can hang on for the title although I think McLaren and Lotus are coming on strong and Red Bull were always quick so it'll be tight. On the one hand they'll be taking points off each other which is good considering the lead in the Championship Alonso has but on the other hand if the Ferrari is slightly off the pace he could end up behind 6 cars and scoring bugger all points. It should be exciting. I don't think Kimi has it to win another championship so we can rule them out. We have to watch out for Vettel, he has cut into Alonso's lead...and bloody LEWIS HAMILTON!!!
Davo Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 That crash pissed me right off. Alonso had absolutely nothing to do with the initial incident and gets his race destroyed before turn 1. Considering the pace Massa managed toward the end of the race you'd have to assume Alonso was looking good for a podium. Also Messinese, I agree the Kimi probably won't win the championship but he's in a car that quick enough to finish near the front so if any of the front runners have a bad weekend then he'll finish ahead of them and take some points. Button was pretty dominant and I was surprised to hear that it's the first race of the season where a driver has lead from lights to flag. Also I just read that Grosjean got a one race ban for causing the crash, which he has accepted and decided not to contest and Maldonado got a 5 place grid drop for his ridiculous jump start and another 5 places for his crash with Glock which ended his race. That adds to the 3 place grid drop he picked up in this race for blocking in qualifying so he managed to pick up 13 places worth of grid slots in a 24 hour period.
Sime11 Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Bathurst is a highlight on my calendar at my house, family/cousins over for a big p!$$ up and bbq runnin all day, really into WSBK at the moment, last weeks race's were unbelievable
Benched Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Goat, don't know if you'd call Webber a choker. He has a lot of shenanigans to put up with at RedBull. Yesterday was another example. Outqualies his team mate but cops another grid penalty. Leads his team mate in the c'ship and finds himself given the 2 stop strategy and Vettel 1. Has his car geared so he can't overtake anyone and even has to put up with his team mate pulling off an aggressive overtake. If that overtake was the other way around the petulance would've been flying. Mind you, I thought Captain Chaos (Schuey) was going to do us all a favour and take Vet Vet out with his pit lane entry. What a laugh. As for Maldonado, he's just extreme that fella. Almost as bad as Karthekian, the mobile chicane.

There's some pretty poor opinions of Webber out there without realising the car yard politics behind the garage door. Insane, & yet he's still in there with a shot! Remarkable. A couple of years ago I spent a couple of days in Monaco. Went out of town & along the coast the first day. Cld've gone into the famous casino the second day but instead chose to walk the entire grand prix circuit... pretty funny trying to take the racing line as much as possible, but made watching this year's race a lot more enjoyable. Have no idea why I brought this up, but after that experience, for some reason I have an urge to walk all the tracks.... so there you go, lol
StillWandering Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 (edited) +1 for some Webber defence. Now that Webber has re-signed with Red Bull its been all the same crap from Red Bull. Make way for the WunderKund! I stopped taking notice last night as soon as I realised Webber had been geared out of the race. Its really boring watching someone as talented as Webber, get held up all race whilst everyone else can engage their push to pass button. Fortunately the WunderKund escaped such issues, he seemed to have straight line speed to match the Mercs lol. Now that Vettel is back in front of Webber for the Championship we should probably only have to wait for him to have a few more wins before Webber is again allowed to compete. Neverbloom Posted September 3, 2012 Author Posted September 3, 2012 i was only attacking webber because of the first korea race where he just lost it, just wonder how different that championship would have been if he didnt make that one mistake he was in a decent position i didnt mean too much of that anyways just was angry about power
Benched Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Disco, I bet it gave you a new appreciation of how intimidating that circuit is.

There is some horrible/ignorant stuff said about MW.... & I get the shits at him too sometimes. Bloody talented driver (even just going off the number of pole positions he's had, & has thrown it away a couple of times), just needs a better team around him...
DiscoD Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Disco, I bet it gave you a new appreciation of how intimidating that circuit is. Mate, it really was amazing, especially walking down that massive 'hook' hairpin corner - it's ridiculous!! A much bigger appreciation of the track layout (especially when you watch live & realise how tight some sections are) & a much better perspective of the racing.... which is why I now want to walk 'em all.... It took well over an hour to get around the full circuit, how long do you reckon it would take to walk Bathurst?

Benched - thats cool as jealous now We have a good setup for Bathurst it takes up 4 sites in a row and has everything from pot belly stove with rotisserie to a portaloo. 3 sites are taken up by the marque which is almost 3 metres tall, 7 metres wide and a bit over 20 metres long.

Davo Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 For those that are interested in the more technical side of motorsport, did anyone see Lewis Hamilton's tweet where he posted a pic of McLaren telemetry data? He removed it pretty much as soon as the team found out but it's been posted on a few websites and according to Autosport, "One rival team boss told Autosport that it had been 'gold dust' for his engineers in understanding the performance of the MP4-27". I'm not a Hamilton fan at all so I'm a bit biased but it seems like a pretty dumb thing to do, especially when he's still negotiating his contract. It kind of looks like he's having a tantrum because he went the wrong way with car set up and Button ended up with the right set up. The pic can be found here.
Benched Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Davo, that looks like a copy of my cardiogram during our WC qualifier against Uruguay.

And speaking of negotiating his new contract, I could of sworn I heard that he wants out of McLaren and wants to join Red Bull (think I heard it earlier on in the season).
Davo Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 Yeah he was keeping his options open but now that Webber and Vettel have contracts for next season I'm not sure where else he can go. A lot of people are saying that the Sauber is actually one of the quickest cars this season (Helmut Marko was one) but they have two inexperienced drivers slightly holding them back and I've heard that they're an option for Hamilton but it's a massive risk. Plus he's all upset because his current McLaren contract doesn't allow him to keep any trophies and I can't see them changing that policy.
DiscoD Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 Plus he's all upset because his current McLaren contract doesn't allow him to keep any trophies and I can't see them changing that policy. I didn't know this. Wow. That's a tough company policy....

It wasn't even part of my plans, didn't think much of the decision at the time (had the day to spend & thought, oh well, seen it enough times on TV, may as well leg it) & 500m into it just got overwhelmed by the experience. Just so funny, pretending to be behind the wheel & taking all the racing lines (at breathtakingly slow speeds). Must have been ridiculous to watch me as a few times along the way I crouched down to see what sort of view the drivers had - doesn't matter that it's a seaside circuit, they can't see any boats at all from their position, lol. So, yeah, it was a throwaway last-minute decision that actually did turn into Awesome.

There's an interesting article here which talks about it and an incident where Prost defied the policy.

julyaugustreno Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 man I don't get motorsports at all, I don't understand how people can be that passionate about it, etc. However... - I can watch Bathurst 1000 nowadays because I married a Greek, so it's generally a day for a greek feast and a bunch of beers and sitting on the couch, which I'm always up for. - A few years back I was lucky enough to have been on Contiki tour which went through Monaco less than a week before the GP there. The race was actually on tele a few nights after I got back home from overseas (Monaco was about our second last stop, and it was awesome). Every year I try and watch the Monaco race because it just reminds me of being there. I went around a lot of the actual track in the tour bus, which was pretty cool. I'd never heard of 'that' hairpin turn before then, but recognise it every time I see it now, and I took a sweet photo from the rumble strip too. Hope you can see these cos they're on my facebook:
Benched Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 JAR, a non motorsport fan who got to check out Monaco. FFS!

Benched Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 For those interested in the V8's, Mercedes is joining the series next season as well.
