  • Should Harry Kewell Come Back to Western Sydney? [Opinion]

    mack

Speculation mounts that Western Sydney is going to be rushed into the A-League to replace Gold Coast United.

Harry Kewell has a release clause written into his Melbourne Victory contract that allows him to terminate the contract after 1 season.

Meetings are ongoing between the league, Kewell, his management and Melbourne Victory management.

A rushed launch for Western Sydney will likely create a situation where substandard marketing, promotion and organisation will take place before the launch.

Is Harry Kewell part of the answer to this issue if the FFA choose to press ahead with a rushed launch?

    I categorically say yes.

Harry Kewell was born and bred in Western Sydney. He played junior football in Fairfield. As we have seen with Melbourne Victory, Kewell provides a big publicity boost, his return was hailed by all codes and interested was widespread.

Having performed this role for the FFA in the AFL state, I believe it is time for Harry to come back and do the same for Western Sydney. He still has the ability on the pitch, being the bright light in a very mediocre Melbourne Victory lineup. His value to Football goes far beyond his ability on the pitch. Harry Kewell ranks with the greats of Australian sport. Playing for Western Sydney in the A-League would give the team an exceptional introduction that no player barring perhaps Tim Cahill could provide.

If the FFA are serious about Western Sydney they need to make this happen.

    What are your thoughts?

Seriously, I would be happy with either Harry, Timmy or Lucas. It ain't gonna happen though. We've got as much chance at being named West Sydney Unicorns as we do securing Timmy or Lucas. Harry, albeit a slight possibility, and one I think would work as our inaugural Captain, apparently is in negotiation with Victory for an upgraded deal.

As an ex Marrickville player like Tim, I would love him to be there. He is a players player as well he goes out of his way to help the youth and grass roots football. A great ambassdor for our game.

I can picture Tim running to the corner post and start boxing it after he has scored off one of his classic headers :)

not to be a weirdo/stalker but I would cherish that moment until the day I die if it came to fruition :)

I've ALWAYS wanted to see this live. Whether it was a socceroos or a WSFC jersey, I'd be stoked

After watching Cahill's interview on ESPN, I honestly think him coming home is sooner than what we think and he may actually play in the A-League, he kept talking about home life and how he missing home etc. But whatever is good for his career and I can't wait to see him play for the Socceroos again.

Harry has a chance to come to us this season although Kewell likes to honour his contracts so I doubt he will come to us tbh.

Neill will probably be playing for us 2013/14 I reckon.

If we could get Timmy that would be very significant as not only is he a real asset on teh field the bloke is liked by all and has star power.

    Cant see it happening though.

    Kewell??? Why not!

Another to look at is Scott Chipperfield. He appears to be leaving Europe from recent reports. He still has been playing at a high level with Basel but had a few injuries this season. He may be a good buy as a regular player off the bench and a great roll model and can be used in the Illawarra to drum up support. He is almost a local and I feel has a few seasons left. He can also be used down the track with player development and other non playing rolls after he retires.

However we still need the big name and I am not sure about Harry, injuries etc have played a great part in his lack of fitness over the last few years.

I mentioned Tim Cahill, a great personality and will do his best for the community which has always been part of his makeup. He has great knowledge and being part of a big club has a lot to pass onto youg players.

He is very well known and would be a huge bonus.

You know, there are SFC fans who live in Marickville who don't see Marickville as a Western Suburb at all ... but rather inner city these days. Claiming Timmy is therefore a tenuous one as far as Western Sydney is concerned. There are some very fluid idea's of what "West" is in Sydney - no clear definitions, since the City is right on the East Coast, everything West of that could be called the West.

Who said Marrickville is west ?

I played for Marrickville and he also was a Marrickville boy.

I live in the West, between Blacktown and Parramatta, but I am sure supporters will also come from many parts of Sydney. You don't have to live in a location to be a supporter of a particular club.

I was born and lived on the Far North Coast and Supported Sydney Olympic since 1977 when they were still Pan Hellanic. I also played for Italo Stars in Lismore and I am 100% Anglo. I still like Olympic and folow their State based comp like Blacktown Demons.

Tim is a great player and would as many of us would like to have him playing for the West Sydney side.

    So what.

SFC have Emerton so WS can have Cahill ;)

And Cahill has had his fair share of injuries also over the last couple of years. I'd still love for Harry to come home and captain the side. Once he got fit, he was a class above most in the A-League in the second half of the season.

Who said Marrickville is west ?

People have been speaking of claiming certain players based on being from "The West" etc ... since this new club has emerged as an idea. There has been plenty of discussion on forums about what exactly West means in a City like Sydney. My point was that claiming Cahill as a Western Suburbs product is contentious .... as many do not see Marickville as "West".

I feel the same way about my old club Balmain ... nothing West about Balmain Tigers at all ... now they are West Tigers.

Balmain is more or less due west of the CBD. Marrickville is south west of the CBD but I still classify it as west. Even if it's inner west, it's still west

    Just to get technical :)

Everything to the left of the coastline is West essentially ... but the issue has been, where does the line start and end as to what is and is not West? We have close family friends and known many who have been Balmain residents for more than 50 years ... I have close ties and associations to Balmain and none would say they see themselves as the West. There is the inner city in all directions - Inner East, North Sydney, Inner West, Inner South etc this is considered the City Hub ... then you have the Eastern, Western, suburbs, Northern Beaches and North Shore and Southern Shire districts spreading out from that.

Historically Balmain and the inner west was never classified as the Western Suburbs, and the people who live in those locales don't call themselves West either - they are inner city. Parramatta was always seen as the West in times gone by but It is a contentious question to be sure. There seems to be a lot of subjectivity appearing in all forums about where the West starts and ends in Sydney. I think the real question is, once you get beyond the Inner West of Sydney City hub, where is the demarcation line? ;)

West is anyone who wants to support the club. Not West is anyone who doesnt :)

Geographically, as far as I'm concerned, the point where directions change is the CBD. Kings Cross is East Sydney, Milsons Point is North Sydney, St Peters is South and Glebe is West. There aren't any 'inners' on a compass.

I always like saying that people who live in the lower blue mountains are 'so far west they're actually east'. They usually enjoy that because it breaks their ties with Penrith haha. Being from Lithgow RT, you'd be so far west that you're actually the Penrith of the Blue Mountains...

I agree ... I have no dog in it either way, I am merely pointing out that what passes for West in this City is usually anybody who lives to the west of where "you" are. It is a fluid and moveable concept that is vulnerable to subjective opinion. Anybody from anywhere in the world can claim West Sydney as a team no doubt, what I find funny is when people start marking out territiory, claiming players based on the suburb they grew up in ... that's a slippery slope right there.

And I think you'll find that if you research various Council or NSW government documents relating to urban planning/development surveys, the term "inner city" - "inner west" is very much alive and well. ;)
