  • Japanese Genius Shinji Ono Latest Superstar Linked To Wanderers

    mack

Overnight reports have linked Japanese superstar Shinji Ono to the inaugural Marquee player position for Western Sydney Wanderers.

The attacking playmaker would be a massive boon to the creative stocks of the new club, while enabling the Wanderers to tap into the potentially lucrative Asian market.

Ono has nearly 350 first team matches under his belt as well as 56 caps for the Samurai Blue. His gifted feet caused him to be nicknamed 'Genius' from early in his career, with outstanding vision and creativity with his defence splitting through balls.

The report in the Sydney Morning Herald states that Ono is preferred by Tony Popovic over Michael Ballack who has made approaches to the Wanderers officials. Such a signing would be a huge boon to the playing roster and would have the attacking stocks of the team salivating at the prospect of his creative playmaking.

man judging by that video, this guy could be to the wanderers what benji marshall is (was?) to the wests tigers in the NRL - flashy, not always rock solid, but capable of being a game winner with a simple flick of the wrist (or ankle, in Ono's case)

I think Ono is a great signing and will hopefully bring quality where it matters, on the pitch. Yes, he might not have the name recognition as someone like Ballack but like someone said somewhere, a week or so ago we didn't want/care if we had a marquee at all, and now we've got someone of real quality and people are complaining?

Now we just need some Japanese flute and drum experts so we can get some war music going :)

I think we need to be mindful of the criteria for a marquee.

Ono is quality no doubt. But will he put bums on seats. Will he draw thousands

To the game who otherwise wouldn't come. Will his addition lead to significant increases in revenue compared to his wage. If the answer is no, then one of the key

Criterias of a marquee is not met.

Jardel, Ricardinho, Moore, and you could even argue Thompson, Carle, SVD disagree with you ;)

FFS Ricardinho was Melbourne's marquee and they have the gall to have a go at us when we sign a player that people have at least actually heard of?

People who are talking about the relative "value" of a marquee player are always talking about selling jerseys and filling stadiums and TV rights etc etc..

There is one simple fact about sport supporters in Sydney - they will follow a winning team!! If the team wins and keeps winning then the interest from the populace will be there, the jerseys will be sold and the people will come through the gates. There will always be the diehard supporters (us), but getting long term support from the general public is also key.

I trust that the club and the coaching staff are looking for a player who is the best fit for the culture and playing style of the team and will hopefully generate on field success. I don't know if that is Ballack or Ono, but whoever they decide on, we need to support them and continue to build the supporter base of this club so that it is here is 10, 20 ,50, 200 years.

Yes some good points. But these are other boxes a marquee needs to tick. His ability to fit into a team and get results. But there'sis also the stand alone inherent value of the player which isjust as important.

That's fine if you want the whole club to live or die by the quality of your marquee. You may get lucky and get a couple of good ones in a row, but I'd rather have a strong club and team, with the marquee just adding to it...
