  • Lyall Gorman appointed CEO

    mack

Lyall Gorman has been appointed full-time CEO of the Western Sydney Club.

The full-time role will encompass leadership of the Board and Management across all facets of the operation from football to finance.

Football Federation Australia CEO Ben Buckley congratulated Gorman on his appointment.

“The establishment of the A-League club in western Sydney at this time is the most important project in the context of building a sustainable A-League. I believe the club will have an impact on the A-League well beyond the region of western Sydney,†Buckley said.

“For that reason there is no one better qualified in Australian sport than Lyall Gorman for the job of kick starting the new club.

“His experience with the Mariners and his time as Head of the Hyundai A-League provide Lyall with a unique insight into the challenges ahead and as a Bankstown boy he has a huge passion for the region.

“On behalf of FFA, I wish to thank Lyall for his enormous professional contribution to the organisation over the past two years. His drive, business acumen and love of the game have made a huge impact on the A-League.

“The big upswing in attendances, TV audiences and club memberships in Season 7 are testament to Lyall’s strategic planning, relentless drive and meticulous implementation.

“These are qualities that will be vital to the establishment of the New Sydney Club. I personally wish Lyall all the best in this exciting challenge.â€

Gorman will commence his new role from Monday 21 May. The appointment is the first step in a process that will see the appointment of an independent board of directors and dedicated executive and management team at the new club.

“I see the role of Executive Chairman as being about much more than building a club on behalf of members and fans. It’s about being entrusted by the football community with a mandate to deliver on the enormous potential of western Sydney,†Gorman said.

“Over the past month I have participated in seven fan forums across the region attended by passionate and committed football people. I have come away energised and emboldened by the endless possibilities in football’s heartland.

“At the outset, the promise was made to put community engagement at the core of the club. That will be the strength of this new club and how it can set new benchmarks in football.â€

He should do a good job as he did with CCM and has at least that under his belt.

By lurking around I am seeing comments that he doesnt like active support and had clashed with the marinators to a point that he cannibalised their home end support. I hope I can find some comments from the Marinators to see whether this is founded as that would be a big concern. West Sydney home end support needs to be given as much freedom as legaly possible. Understandably no ripping flares etc. but flags, banners, drums, whatever to make that end lively needs to be fully backed.

If he does not like active support he should not be ceo of a football club.

He said at the parramatta forum that he'd have no problems with drums specifically.

This was the forum he made the comment about not taking his kids (to be in the active support at SOME grounds). He said fans would be given all the freedom possible to support the club (banners, tifos, chants, etc). These would slowly be taken away if the fans abused those freedoms. he was specific about that. Generally said he loves active support.

I don't know much about him apart from what I've seen at the fan forums, but he doesnt seem like the kind of guy that will beat around the bush. I think we need to give all new staff the benefit of the doubt, whether they've got a sketchy history or not. Not saying Lyall does, but there's a bit of skepticism already in this thread, so there's bound to be some haters out there.

When the rumours first started circling that he might get the job (many weeks ago), i wasnt happy, didnt have a good impression of the guy.

After hearing him at the forums and in the media since, i cant think of anyone anywhere near as suited to the job as he. The only slight negative i see is his previous role as head of HAL. Even then, practically speaking, that will be a positive too imo.

The big positive is that he has been at the forums and seen the passion first hand which re-energised him.

He knows what we as fans expect from the club and as an extension of him, he knows that a new owner will come onboard eventually and his future at the club will rest on his achievements.

I'm willing to give the guy a go, let's see what he has to offer and his level of engagement with us. And let's remember he will be measuring us as supporters the same way.

Good luck Lyall the sleeping giant is stirring and it's you who needs to make sure it wakes up kicking!

I liked Lyall and what he had to say on TWG last week or so ... I have no issues with his appointment.

He has $400,000 to perform and he's aware that he no longer works in a sheltered environment.

I'm sure he's also aware that we the fans of WSFC will be his harshest critics, if he happens to stuff it up.

Lyall will do a great job. He is not just a suit, he has a long history with football as a player and administrator. With popa announced now you need a club, schools and media-friendly football operations manager to foster the integration of the club into the community.

yeah seems like the right bloke for the job.

however if he has issues with the supporters group this could change very quickly.

has the experience of starting a new club, my concern is that he knows how the FFA runs, maybe he may make decisions to please the FFA rather than please Western Sydney, the actual football club.

I don't think he had any real problem with the Marinators - they just had their own internal schisms and then a couple of other rival groups formed.

I would like to see what some Mariners fans think of him, he will be in for a rude shock if he doesn't like active support.

I never heard anyone experience any problems with him. The Marinators had drums, bagpipes, banners, tifo's, flags, you name it. What happened with the Marinators was the clowns started to run the circus.

I would add though, he's anti flare.

Thats right. Not hard to wrap your head around that one. He admitted (parra forum) the league/ffa had trouble coming to terms with active support but was very supportive of it
