Off-Season Rumour Mill

10/17/2016 0 Comments

The silly season is well and truly here and while it's unlikely we'll see much confirmation from clubs or Football NSW yet, that hasn't stopped rumours from cropping up all over social media and in the back channels where players and coaches talk.

Here are a selection of the best or most interesting doing the rounds.

Sutherland Plan Key Returns

The pair left under interesting circumstances, rocked up at Sydney United 58 with plenty of bluster and were key components in their trophy success last season, but it appears the lure of a return to playing football in the shire could see Panni Nikas and Nick Stavroulakis return to Seymour Shaw for the next campaign.

Reports suggest neither were keen to stick around following the departure of Mark Rudan and despite concerns about the coaching staff at the Sharks, the financial incentives, big enough to force some key existing pieces of the puzzle out, mean that the pair will be intent on making a successful return.

Marconi Investing Big Time

It's no secret the Stallions have the dollars to compete with the big boys, and they've certainly not hidden their desire to get back among them in 2017 after missing out on promotion to NPL new boys Sydney FC last time out.

Marconi have been linked with a host of players, including former Western Sydney Wanderers man Michael Beauchamp, who was a Stallions Junior, Peter Triantis and former Blacktown City gloveman Nenad Vekic. While confirmation from the club has not yet been forthcoming on any signings, it's safe to say the Stallions checkbook is running hot at the moment.

Saliadarre & de Haan Link Up Again, Sort Of

It's not quite like the past 8 years where the pair where Club Captain and Manager respectively, but the pair have both taken the local approach to their next gig following the shambolic end to proceedings this season at Blacktown Spartans.

Carlos Saliadarre has been confirmed as the first team keeper at Mt Druitt Town Rangers while fellow local Ben de Haan has taken up the role of Technical Director. It is thought the pair had offers on the table from NPL 1 clubs, but opted to stay local and minimise impact on their off-field lives.

Manly United Keen To Go Further In Finals Football

Following a season where they captured the Club Championship before being quickly and clinically dispatched in the finals, Manly United have reportedly secured the services of former Blacktown City man Sasa Macura, Hayden Morton who spent time with the Blacktown Spartans after his departure from the Central Coast Mariners and Nikola Taneski.

Hayden Morton denied the move when contacted earlier today.

Turnover At United Likely

Following another campaign of success, there is expected to be some movement at United after a disappointing Grand Final defeat at the resignation of Head Coach Mark Rudan, who leaves the club to link up with Ufuk Talay as his assistant at the Young Socceroos.

New gaffer Davor Bajsic, a former Croatia Under 21 star, will want to make his own mark on the first team playing squad and has reportedly targeted Petar & Ante Markovic, Ante Tomic, Nick Olsen and Corey Biczo to make that happen.

Nikola Taneski, Peter Triantis and Theo Kofinas are thought to be headed out the door to make room.

Sutherland Could Lose Figon

Sutherland have allegedly lost out in their bid to retain long-time enigmatic frontman to local rivals Rockdale City Suns. With reports Sutherland have thrown all their eggs in one or two very interesting baskets, they were bound to lose one or two of their existing crop, and the inconsistent Figon looks to be at least one casualty.

City Losing Key Contributors

They have been the benchmark of consistency in the league for some time now, but that, at the very least, appears under threat following the departure of a number of quality players from the club this off season.

The likes of Patrick Antelmi (Wollongong Wolves), Nenad Vekic (Marconi Stallions), Sasa Macura (Manly United), Jonathan Grozdanovski (Rockdale City Suns), Danny Choi (Adelaide United), Travis Major (Pegasus FC - Hong Kong) and at least one or two others moving on will mean a huge changing of the guard for Mark Crittenden's men and with little to no word on any incoming signings at this stage, the club are either operating swiftly and quietly on bringing in new talent, or may be struggling to fill too many vacancies.

First time I heard this on Rudan

Head Coach Mark Rudan, who leaves the club to link up with Ufuk Talay as his assistant at the Young Socceroos.

I can add a few things

Aram Tayebi and Blade Richards from Parramatta to Mt Druitt

What's also crazy is that of the 16 NPL 2 clubs only 5 did not change coaches either during or are after this season.

Also Ben Dehaan is not the TD at Mt Druitt. he is the SAP TD. As his son plays at our club and we are super happy to have him join us.

Ben Gough is YL TD and I am the Dircetor Of Football.

Football NSW have announced some changes to the format of NPL competitions in 2017 (predominately involving youth comps) & I will attempt to post copy of letter sent to clubs later.

Friday 21 October 2016

Dear NPL Clubs,

The Football NSW Board met to review a series of proposals presented by the NPL 1 Standing Committee. These proposals were subsequently shared with the NPL2 clubs and they were requested to provide their response to this submission. The submission has been separated into relevant topics under Senior, Youth and SAP League Football.

The Board considered response to each submission is as follows:

SENIOR FOOTBALL AGE GRADE U19, U21 and 1ST to be the senior age grades for the 2017 NPL and State League season. The U17 age grade to be added for the 2017 NPL and State League Season The Board has considered the recommendations of NPL 1 Standing Committee and has resolved to change Under 20 age group to Under 21 age group, Under 18 age group to Under 19 age group in 2018 and for the introduction of Under 17 age group for the 2018 Season.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS As per the request of the NPL 1 Standing Committee the Board instructed management to conduct a review of the Club Championship points system, and based on the outcomes of that review, the feedback of clubs in NPL 1 and NPL 2, and a lack of consensus amongst the relevant stakeholders have resolved to maintain the current Club Championship weighting system for 2017.

CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES NPL 1, NPL 2, NPL 3, NPL 4 Senior League to comprise a top 5 finals format The Board considered the recommendation of the NPL 1 Standing Committee and has resolved to remain with a top 5 finals (12 team competition) for NPL 1, 6 team finals format for NPL 2 and 3 (14 team competition), and a top 4 finals for State League (10 team competition).

PLAYER POINTS SYSTEM (PPS) Player points system to be scrapped due to being a restraint of trade and third line forcing which is a breach of the trade practice act. NPL Clubs to be allowed three (3) visa players per season. The Board considered the resolution and understood the concerns being expressed but the Board did not feel free to operate outside of the constraints of the National Competition Framework. Additionally, Troy McColl will manage a discussion paper on Visa players outlining their rationale for 2017 Season. This paper to be provided to the November Board meeting.

YOUTH & SAP FOOTBALL YOUTH STRUCTURE NPL – 12 teams Seniors and 14 team’s youth NPL 2 – 14 teams NPL 3 – 14 teams (clubs to be consistent of pre flat line clubs including A-League Youth league) All NPL, NPL 2, NPL 3 and NPL 4 Competitions to have a youth league 13s -17s The Board has considered the recommendation thoroughly for 2017 and has resolved to maintain the current youth structure for the 2017 season. The Board has also resolved to continue dialogue and discussion with clubs in respect to Youth Structures for the 2018 Season and beyond, with a view to formalising the 2018 Structure by the end of April 2017.

CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES Youth League Championship Series to be reintroduced and to be a tiered system

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Youth League Club Championship Points to have the weighting amended as follows:

HAL CLUBS HAL Clubs can - not play up a year in their age group HAL Clubs can - not have feeder Clubs (i.e - North Shore Mariners FC, Western NSW Mariners FC)

The Board resolved to make no changes to the application of regulations to HAL Clubs with respect to player eligibility. PPS is still in and won't go anywhere. FNSW will only change if FFA changes.

For WSW NPL it makes it a bit different. As the Trev Morgan team are 20s. This doesn't really make a diff for 1st but will for the under 20 who even though we're mainly 18s themselves will now play 21 year olds every week. And the 18 s will play 19s even though most are 16s. This happens in 2018.

Will the NPL1 & 2 rules be amended to allow AL clubs to play u21 year olds in lieu of u20's?

This will depend on what other NPL states have. If FFA make a change it will have to be across the entire NPL. It make sense as will align with NYL so NPL clubs could in fact be playing more mature WSW teams in seniors. But at moment no change for this season coming

Hawkesbury Radio to stream live PS4 NPL matches weekly

In the continual drive for more promotion of elite football in NSW, Hawkesbury Radio are set to broadcast various PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues NSW Men matches from the three elite Men’s competitions every weekend in 2017.

The station will feature matches from the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s competition as well as Western Sydney Wanderers matches in PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues 2 NSW Men’s and for the first time Hawkesbury City Hawks FC games in PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues 3 NSW Men’s.

Hawkesbury Radio’s Western Sydney Wanderers coverage has been well received amongst football fans this season with the station providing live radio coverage of all A-League games as well as W-League, FFA Cup and National Youth League games.

The station is now doubling down on its live football content by providing extensive live coverage of the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s competition with every club to be featured at least once throughout the season and every ground to be visited at least once.

Executive Producer of Live Sport Julian Daw was delighted with the outcome and could not wait for the new season to kick off.
