  • Wanderers Draw 1-1 In Fiesty Newcastle Encounter

    mack

Dino Kresinger got on the scoresheet again to grab a deserved share of the pre-season bragging rights in Newcastle.

Kresinger's equaliser midway through the second half cancelled out an early 35 yard thunderbolt from Jets fullback Neville which left Tyson stranded. Newcastle had the better of the first half creating several chances and taking advantage of poor Wanderers passing. The Wanderers were kept back in their own territory for much of the half but a solid defensive unit kept the Jets from doing further damage.

The second half was a complete turnaround. The Wanderers came out firing across the park, pressing and putting the Jets defenders under pressure. They created a number of chances and Kresinger got on the end of a good cross by D'Apuzzo and flicked it over Birghitti for the equaliser.

Moments after Labinot Haliti was injected into the match he had a great chance with a wide angled one on one after a through ball but he put his shot just wide. The 1-1 result was at the very least what the Wanderers players deserved and had Haliti been able to hit the net or the Wanderers were able to convert some of the later chances a win would have been a just result. If Popovic had played a full strength lineup with Elrich, Haliti, Mooy and Covic the Wanderers would surely have run out winners by several goals.

This effort was very much a team effort without their star midfielder Aaron Mooy, and with livewire winger Kubi left on the bench for the entire game there were no stellar stand out performances. Despite the good all around team performance, Tyson and Hersi will need to do better to threaten for starting positions.

Popovic was vocal and animated on the sidelines, shouting instruction after instruction to his team. It is clear to see he is aiming for a technical ground based structure with the football and I hope the club will persist with this strategy and bring it through from the youth ranks.

It was a great trip, a nice local ground filled with Jets members most of which were decked out in team colours. I hope that the Wanderers club will be getting a supporter day for our members organised. The amount of young kids there was staggering, and gaining that connection from a young age can make the club a fan for life. The Newcastle fans tolerated our rambunctious hollering with good spirit although I had to stop Abbadabba from causing an inter-club incident after he kept bagging Zadkovic for approximately 15 minutes non-stop.

The next scheduled match for the Wanderers is on Sunday the 23rd of September against the Wellington Phoenix in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Me. I lead the charge. Website Admin and backup Capo, I can do it all.

Abba followed. I pulled out the "We Are The Terrace" chant, and the "Western Sydney We Adore You", threw in a few "RBB!" chants. Decided not to go the "Westie Scum" as we had a dozen 6 year olds in the direct vicinity. Did the "Wanderers score a goal" too.

What's happened to Aaron Mooy the last two trials, is he injured?

Also what position did Hersi play, wouldn't mind seeing him on the left and Kubi is he left or right footed, looked good on the right in the trial against Parra.

Nice wrap up Mack, although you did fail to mention the sub standard performance of the referee Ben (wanker) Williams.

His performance was deplorable allowing multiple from behind or, through the back challengers to get unchecked.

Those amongst the travelling Wanderers Supporters become quite vocal at times even suggesting that Mr Williams voluntarily offer to sub himself out of the match, to be replaced by the ranga (4th official), who was maning the interchange area.

He nor the flag happy linesperson, couldn't have been any worst than Williams, who fully deserved the barrage of light hearted abuse he received from fans of both teams.

I spoke with Aaron (who sat in the stands) and he indicated that he had a little injury niggle.

No biggy just precautionary and he's hoping to play next week against the Kiwis.

Young Kwabs was itching to get on the park. Lucky for Newcastle Popa didn't unleash him on the hapless Jets defense in the 2nd half, instead deciding to inject Haliti on the right flank with 15 / 20 minutes to go. Popa's willingness to go for the juggular by switching to a 4 - 3 - 3 structure after Dino equalised, almost paid off immediately when Labs almost secured a well deserved lead for the travelling team. Some of the Wanderers supporters even went the early crow when Haliti decisively beat the keeper, only to be left wondering whether the ball had travelled through a whole in the net.

The home crowd were notably quiet in the latter stages and had the Wanderers converted the total dominance in field position into a scoreboard advantage, the Jets fans may have gone home feeling rather more despondent than they would already have been.

There was no sign of the Squadron or any form of active support at the ground. In fact the crowd of 4 - 5000, were very subdued and the small pocket of Wanderers fans had a greater level of engagement in the match than the home fans that were in attendance.

Our rejets did us proud peeps and on that performance, given our apparent superior fitness levels to the Jets, the Wanderers are definately top six candidates.

    Yahoo, good times ahead.

BTW what a performance from Specky.

After sitting a exam in the morning at Campbelltown, he then drove unaccompanied to Newy for the match.

We caught up with him at half tiime and he was notably relieved to find that others had shown similar dedication to our beloved Wanderers.

Hersi would be suited to the bench.

His touch is lacking although he may improve with time to acclimatise.

What a great result. Especially since the Jets squad has been in training together since May. They've beaten Wellington, and drawn with Sydney FC. And now a fortunate draw with WSW. So - WSW are certainly a competitive unit and not to be taken lightly by any opponents.

I hope that quietens all those people (fans??) who have been saying things like "It's going to be a looonnngg season" and "we're going to get smashed 5-0 each week" and all that rubbish. Let's give Popa some credibility and accept that he is structuring the team well and knows what he's doing. Don't worry about results and line-ups in pre-season friendlies and trials against local Sydney PL teams. He knows what he wants to achieve and has a plan to do it - and he needs to look at players he doesn't know so he can see what they can do. (He already knows who he knows, if you get what I mean.) And the young players will benefit from the experience of playing with the more experienced ones. There's some great youth coming through the club.

So - well done WSW. I'm so looking forward to the season start in a few weeks.

    Good write up Taurus, thanks.

Interesting that Popa changed to a 3-4-3 to get the win. It will be interesting to see how he adapts to changes in the game and how he reads it. A lot of the current and previous HAL coaches are very stubborn and don't change their shape mid game if things aren't working.

I don't care if we don't score 4 goals a game. I'd love to be that team that everyone finds extremely frustrating to score against and break down. (must be the Juve and Italian in me...) And then we can get them on the counter with our speed.

I have hopes that we will surprise a few people/teams, considering we have had so little time to prepare and get a team together.

The players WILL step up when they play at home with the RBB chanting non-stop. It will give them a boost, I have no doubt.

edit: just checked Centrebet. We are over $4 to beat CCM and the draw is paying $3.40 which is a damn good price. Future RBB funding through bets? ;)

edit2: we are favourites at $1.66 to finish last! WTF!!

That's what I love about betting in the A-league. There's always good odds as opposed to the EPL.

Kresinger is 21 Dollars to be top scorer as is Bridge. Del Piero is 10 dollars...

Keen on that Draw prices and the prices for a win...may put money on both

From what my Croatian friends have told me Kresinger should get golden boot just because of his quality.

Im skeptical. First Season. Second season he will go strong

Berisha didn't take long to settle in, don't see why Super Dino won't either!

Anyone interested in forming a small punters club. Each home match, at the Woolie, we take turns from our kitty laying a bet on the match at hand.

Maybe we chuck in $10 each, each home match and you can bet as you like if it's your turn.

Taurus I'm sure you'll be keen.

$21 for Kresinger? I think its worth putting $10 on him.

Im going to have money on Del Piero and Berisha

You'll have empty pockets at the end of the season. :sorry:

Forget the exotics, just load up on the Wanderers to finish top six. :good:

4-2-3-1 initially then 4-3-3 after we equalised.

Wanderers were totally dominant in last 30 minutes.

Local boyz who came on in the 2nd half were a class above the imports, other than Dino, who the more I see him reminds me of Viduka.

Just wish they'd give him the ball on the carpet more regularly.

Good to see Dino come over after the game and thank his small, but merry band of followers.
