  • Good Friday Draw In The Darkness And The Gloom

    mack

An otherwise dreary match both weather and football wise was lit up by two pieces of individual brilliance, with Yojiro Takahagi's stunning free kick & Melbourne City winger Harry Novillo's solo effort seeing the two bottom half teams share the points.

Nikita Rukavytsya took advantage of a poor pass from Novillo to run at goal, only to be cut down by the big haired City central defender Kew Jaliens. The referee showed him a well deserved yellow card, and there was a line of enquiry that suggested there should have been a harsher punishment. As it stood, City were punished in a different fashion, as Takahagi took a two step run-up before curling a delightful shot into the top corner.

Novillo struck back with 5 minutes to play in the first half. He took possession on halfway, he cut inside with far too much pace for right fullback Sam Gallaway. A neat run across the path of the winger by Jack Clisby saw Mateo Poljak fail to defend against the man with the ball, and before Takahagi or Aspro could close him down he unleashed a drive of such venom and swerve that it deceived Dean Bouzanis and left the keeper clutching at thin air.

Tomi Juric should have put the Wanderers back in front before half-time, as Tando Velaphi made one of his trademark errors to hand the national team striker an open goal, only for Juric to somehow manage to miss wide right.

The second half was a dank affair to match the inclement weather, neither side being able to penetrate, and after 3 minutes of injury time the referee mercifully brought the match to a close. The draw, combined with Brisbane's 6-1 trashing of the Central Coast Mariners, saw the faint glimmer of hope for a finals spot should Perth Glory get stripped of their points for an alleged salary cap breach wiped out almost as soon as it had begun.

The Wanderers next match is against FC Seoul in the Asian Champions League on Tuesday the 7th of April at Parramatta Stadium.

juric over bulut any day. Bulut is nothing special

If you take your red and white goggles off you can see how much work Bulut does compared to the most over rated striker in HAL.... His current form did not warrant a Socceroos call up and a lot of people were suprised by his selection, not due to his injury but why he was picked at all.
Yeah, it wasn't like Tomi played really well against Asian opponents in the ACL to get the national team call up was it? And it's not like he set up the goal that won us the th either, right? #shortmemories
yes he dived his way to win us the Asian cup, first dive failed, so he went for another dive and then just gave up and decided to try to play football and he actually did something positive to win us a match, maybe if his brain decides that instead of falling over like a drunk Irishman he could actually try to play football because when he actually tries to play football he can do great stuff, there is no doubt he is talented but his brain just doesnt work

bulut comes in and plays 6 matches and more than doubles the amount of goals our supposed main threat to goal has scored all season, statistically bulut is better, much much better

I agree with you Goat, that Bulut has been an absolute amazing find for us. It's great to have him back home and in a Wanderers Jersey.

But 'statistically' Bulut hasn't yet traveled 200,000+ kms for this team, nor been part of the record-setting Most number of matches played in a Calendar year, either.

I don't think that professional athletes need to be wrapped in cotton wool, but the Wanderers have been pushed harder than any team in Australian history, and we're seeing the results of that, now.

Juric has been Fantastic for this club. Scoring for fun in our 2nd season when others weren't. Not to mention scoring the winning goal in the ACL Final.

It hurts so much not to see him score at Wanderland this time. But I know that the pain will be washed away by the Euphoria I will feel when he does.

Agree - Bulut is refreshing, young and enthusiastic.  He tries to be everywhere and do everything and needs maturing - a good find and will be good for us.  I thought Tomi had a good game.  He didn't score but he was strong at holding the ball, causing a few good defenders (eg Kisnorbo) a lot of problems.  He is a very strong player when he holds the ball but we don't have the combinations running off him perhaps.  Thought he played hard - especially coming off lack of game fitness.  Tomi has had a long, long season with well over 300,000 km travel and no break for Asian Cup.  Sure he has a lot of maturing but he is quality.

I enjoyed Friday's game - disappointed we didn't win as we deserved but we played confidently and came up against a keeper in the right place at a few critical moments - and another goal of the season type shot (that's at least 3-4 we've had against us).

A very good interview on the world game between popa and Zdrilla - explains a bit.

"Rukavytsya took advantage of a poor pass from Novillo to run at goal, only to be cut down by the big haired City central defender Kew Jaliens" When Mack writes 'big haired' etc is that bordering on racist or just a bad haired day comment.

Kew Jaliens does look remarkably similar to a stuffed toy I had as a child.
