WestSydneyFootball.Com Round 3 Review

Melbourne Victory posted a come from behind victory over their South Australian rivals. Marcos Flores in his first game against his old club was given a yellow card for diving in the box early on in the match, in a moment very reminiscent of the dive that Del Piero took in the Sydney Derby. The first half was mostly devoid of chances but with 3 minutes to go Jeronimo Neumann was put clear through on goal but pushed his shot wide.
Mere minutes into the second half Billy Celeski had a complete brain fade. He was chasing down a clearance from a corner when he stuck his arm out and made contact with the ball. It was inside the box and Adelaide were awarded a penalty. Dario Vidosic hammered home the penalty for the lead. The lead only lasted minutes with Mark Milligan scoring from a towering header at a corner. Boogard had a curling effort that hit the crossbar. Archie Thompson was put through on goal but missed. Victory took the lead on 66 minutes when a Thompson cross was met by Rojas who needed three attempts to score. Adelaide had nothing left in the tank and couldn't pull back level.

The F3 Derby was a battle in every sense of the word. 20 seconds in Ruben Zadkovic was lucky to escape without a red card for a woeful studs up lunge. A controversial penalty was awarded to Newcastle when Heskey was brought. Ryan Griffths slotted the penalty home to take the lead. Tom Rogic had the best chance for the Mariners, with a mazy run from halfway but he failed to beat Jets keeper Mark Birghitti.
James Virgili beat several players with an incisive run along the byline before cutting it back for Heskey to tap it in for a 2-0 lead. Bernie Ibini converted a scrappy chance off a long throw. In the dying moments of the game Patrick Zwaanswijk appeared to score a dramatic equaliser bit it was disallowed for a questionable offside call.

A full report is listed here. The inaugural Sydney Derby ended in a 0-1 result to Sydney FC, with Del Piero making the most of some very questionable contact in the 54th minute to win a penalty. Sydney FC were disgraceful with their persistent fouling and timewasting, but the Wanderers have no-one to blame but themselves for being unable to hit the back of the net for a 3rd game running.
The key moment was when Aaron Mooy was adjudged to have clipped the Italian, who was already on his way down before contact was made. The first penalty was ordered to be retaken. The second was saved by Covic but it rebounded back to the marquee player who was able to finish at the second attempt. Wanderers had numerous shots at goal but only put four on target the entire night and will need to do better.

Wellington had 7 players back from international duty but were missing their captain Durante. Berisha had a good chance early but was too greedy and his shot was blocked. Bertos delivered a cross that went across everyone in the box. Stein Huysegems opned the scored with a nice finish near the penalty spot. Roar wasted several chances until Berisha was put through on goal and chipped Paston to equalise on 39 minutes.
Berisha was unlucky as a richochet just trickled wide. Paul Ifill clipped Hingert from behind in the box but the referee waved it away. A penalty claim for handball up the other end was also dismissed and the game fell away with both sides happy to earn a point.

Perth played a relatively simply victory over Heart, even without star striker Shane Smeltz. Clint Bolton made a miracle double save from Dean Heffernan with 10 minutes gone. Williams badly hit free kick went across the goal with Fred sliding in but not being able to stretch and score. A huge mixup at a corner resulted in Heffernan being awarded the goal.
Perth attacked the shed end in the second half but took until the 85th minute to put the game to bed. Billy Mehment flicking on a corner to complete a comfortable victory.
