  • Positive Community Response Drives Membership Sales

    mack

A Lyall Gorman interview confirmed today that 400+ memberships have been sold in the last three days as public steels itself to support the Wanderers.

The interview contained several quotes from Lyall Gorman about the club membership drive in the wake of the Sydney United loss which included ugly scenes of police brutality against the Sydney United supporter section.

Gorman spoke on how the growth in sales has confirmed to the club that the events have not tarnished the Wanderers brand and that the public are on board the club as it moves towards the start of the A-League season.

"Most of those memberships came via our call centre, and overwhelmingly the message was that the fans have been galvanised to show that the Wanderers brand is one they're proud of and want to be part of," Gorman said.

The club has followed up on this interest by attending several community engagements over the weekend.

    Opinion:

I find it mildly ironic that the person giving the interview is Tom Smithies, a man who was part of, and some would say the centre of, the orchestrated media attack on Football in regards to the off-pitch events at the Sydney United match. In this article he states that sport faced 'accusations of shooting itself in the foot'. With himself being the first person to create an anti-supporter and anti-football article he should have the guts to admit that he himself was part of that attack instead of just referring to faceless 'accusations'.

Instead of talking about the 'accusations' he should be pointing his readers to the more accurate article by fellow reporter Rachel Olding. A report that spoke with witnesses and included confirmation of casual police brutality along with random assaults on spectators who had nothing to do with the incident.

Will Tom now do his actual job, as a sports reporter, by reporting on the matches he is there to cover. Rather than deliberately leaving the stadium in order to file his attack article on the clubs, supporters and the game as a whole.

Each member of the Wanderers 16-strong squad attended community events yesterday.

Good darts, can't asked for anymore than that.

Smithies you are a joke! Oh man football support is off its nut with that singular arrest this week. God forbid if the 'more popular' codes in this country actually expected a certain level of decorum from its supporters.

You are only in this for your own career, nothing more. tarnishing the name of our club and its supporters across the front page of this nations most popular nation will not be forgiven by your hidden puff pieces. You support football with about as much gusto as Andrew Demetriou and R Wilson. It is disgusting the amount of damage you and your colleagues are willing to do to a wonderful group of people.

Who cares, its the West ey? I wrote this whilst inebriated and it makes a whole lot more sense than the bs that you publish in the Terrograph. Heaven forbid you support the code that you write for, I am more than willing to support a journo who has the balls to stand up to the media interests of their employers and write a no bs football article.

Sorry Smithies, but everyone knows you would sell your brother down the river if it meant getting a story.

Perhaps one day you will grow some balls and actually try and grow a game that has unlimited potential in this country.

Pm me if you are actually interested in speaking to someone who has been to all the games? Or perhaps my 5ft tall girlfriend who was scared to her wits end whilst supporting the RBB last week might provide you with more suitable material lol. She found the few ignorants highly disturbing lol.

You know exactly what you are doing, as confirmed by your reports in reference to our criticisms. Perhaps try and take the hard road for once.

Thankyou for confirming my decision not to undertake a career in journalism. Thanks to you I might actually serve a purpose in my life besides serving my own interests.

on the membership sales its really nice to see that we got 400+ memberships in the past 3 days i wonder how much the amazing behaviour of the RBB has to do with that, i bet we can take quite a bit of credit

I think that has plenty to do with it, but I also think the social media response (where fans have rallied behind the code/team on FB, Twitter, online forums, media article comments) must have played a massive role... media bias only works where people are gullible, it appears a lot of people are either aware of football's progress in Australia AND/OR they're awake to the mainstream media agenda against football.

one thing that must prick DT ears is the increase in the number of comments its football stories are getting lately (the ones they publish anyway. anyone else leave a message for Wilson yesterday - mine was actually as nice as it cld've been)....

Article says the 400 was a 25% increase on the total which would mean they have sold 2000.

I left a comment on Rebecca Wilson's article, and ticked the 'email me if this is published' box - I'm yet to receive an email. The one positive that came from the article was that she actually said she would give football a chance, based on certain criteria. I'd love to get her on here to show her what the people who count actually think of her, rather than the suburban housewife dominant audience she preaches to on Sunrise and in the Tele (nothing against suburban housewives of course).

I left a measured response without hearing back too.

Sadly I know it's pretty much a waste of time. The Sunrise/Tele crowd lap it up, she just needs to keep feeding it and keeps her job as a result, she's not about to change her mind. Plus in her case she IS that demographic, she's not merely pandering to it.

It's pretty poor journalism, though, when you're only the publishing the reader feedback that suits your purpose... otherwise why have the comment option available at all...

So the comments can effectively only show "+1"s and thus the average indifferent Joe that stumbles across the article and reads those comments can be swayed to that way of thinking.

Precisely. To show how low News Ltd stoops distort public perception. Last year an article (don't even remember which one now) had a reader poll. I selected 'no', then selected 'submit vote' & the results that came up showed two (2) 'yes' votes and zero (0) 'no' votes - what?!? So they even rig their polls to persuade public sentiment.....

And they usually let you vote multiple times, so its all fake results anyway.

I don't read the tele online regularly but are the comments behind the paywall or something? There didn't appear to be any which i find hard to believe... i wouldn't be surprised if they just turn her comments off seeing as she sprouts such bollocks.

I love it when you talk to some nub whos like 'yeah I voted 20 times on that COS DATS WOT I BELEVE IN' with a smug look on their face. Usually these people are encountered at workplaces.
