Gorman Talks Wanderers & Del Piero

Recommended Posts

Didn't Lyall recently state, in response to allegations that WSW were waiting in the wings for ADP, that they wouldn't be signing a Marquee player, rather he wanted to stick to the community team schtick.

Let's look at this from the other side of the fence.

There is no doubt at all that the "Campbelltown incident" and SFC signing Del Piero has all but stalled and screwed with WSW's momentum. We hardly exist anymore in the public eye. WSW needs to get back into the media space and back into the thoughts of potential fans in the area. If signing an international marquee is the way to do it, then so be.

Before ADP was signed it could be argued we were winning the race and SFC had to play catchup. Now its no argument that SFC has soared ahead and we'll struggle to capture the hearts of those sitting on the fence with the team we currently have.

Maybe Taurus finally arranged that trial for flip flap man?

I got inside info that wanderers are in talks with an international marquee and the deal will potentially be completed at the end of the week. Not gonna tell you who but he is a quality player, better then heskey. Supposedly the international marquee isn't included in the 5 international visa spots.

Not so sure about this.

A) iv never heard of an Extra visa spot.

B) im not sure the FFA want to fork out For a marquee as it would show abit of favouritism towards us and cause conflict with other clubs.

Can someone please explain to me how we can sign a international player when we have filled all 5 VISA spots?

Impossible.

Unless we send out one of our Internationals on loan somewhere straight away, if so.. HELLOOO BALLACK!

As long as the FFA don't spend absurd money then I don't think it's favouritism, if anything having a no marquee policy would show favouritism to the other clubs by letting them sign marquee players but not us.

As for the visa spots, you're only allowed 5 players who aren't Australian but there are the following exemptions:

These players do not fill a Visa position:

1Those players who were born and started their professional career abroad but have since gained Australian Residency (and New Zealand Residency, in the case of Wellington Phoenix);

2Australian residents (and New Zealand residents, in the case of Wellington Phoenix) who have chosen to represent another national team;

3Injury Replacement Players;

4Guest Players (eligible to play a maximum of ten games).

So our options are either loaning out someone to make space, having the incoming player as injury cover (although that sounds dodgy) or the most likely for someone like Ballack would be the guest player role. Get him to play 10 matches up to the January transfer window where he can look for a new club overseas, plus having him short term would be more affordable.

Yeh I totally agree, all that bs really stunted our growth. Would love for us to stay away from all that star power crap but the reality is that we no longer exist.

Wow Ballack ay, still I didn't think we had the cash.

Can't tell if serious?

Most other clubs are paying for the marquee's themselves. (Traktovenko forked out alot for ADP) If Wanderer's want to sign marquees then do it WHEN THEY ARE PRIVATELY OWNED. The potential money the FFA could spend could go to many better places, all over Aus (grassroots etc)

When you think about the interest Del Piero has brought to the League the financial benefit will be enormous, especially when talking pending media rights. This could be the FFA's line of thinking, invest a small amount now for an extra 10mil or so for the media rights, besides we have spent sweet fa already.

That extra money could then be spread further amongst grass roots organisations, but that is the sort of forward thinking the FFA hasn't been known for in the past.

Either way some people have said this might have something to do with our sponsor NRMA much like Webjet had a lot to do with Del Piero.

Agree with all you said then. Except Webjet didn't really have alot to do with ADP (except booking his flight maybe), we don't even know if our deal has been improved with all this added exposure to their brand.

Afaik the Webjet deal was meant to increase substantially with the signing of Del Piero. Whatever they gave you earlier they should be paying you tenfold. The media exposure already has been unprecedented.
