Western Sydney Wanderers Vs Sydney United 22/08/2012 7:30Pm

For the record, before anyone else chimes in with thier "its just $15, cheapos, jews" comments.

 

The issue being brought up is WSW being a brand spankin new club is looking to grab more and more fans support> I would have thought being the first ever season, and pre-season we would want as many people to check out what the fuss is all about in all the regions of western sydney.

And here lies the issue that a $15 entry fee will deter some locals whom arnt already a WSW or Sydney United supporter. Comprende

 

You know what, it is a money grab. It will go to a football club with a big history and will be put toward football related things.

 

This is unlike all the other NSWPL clubs WSW have played so far. This club, will bring its own supporters in big numbers. That is why you expect a decent crowd.

 

Mate, I buy the beers for my friends. I don't like it !!!! That, and I can save the $6 by drinking water!

 

Being a Sydney United fan, I'm interested to know you point of view aswell as what others think with regards to supporting WSW? Are you against it? Only a Sydney United Fan, or looking for some convincing from the WSW?

 

Mate, I grew up as an Australian Croatian, so being a Sydney United was like going to church. It was part of my life for as long as I can remember and the club will always be the club I follow, although I am no longer an active supporter. I have made a few posts regarding this with the younger generation who still actively support SU (and participate in this forum) regarding the reasons why.

 

I guess the fact that I purchased a family membership should give you an idea on where I stand with WSW. I am truly excited about the potential of this club given that it cuts across so many barriers that stood in the way of club such as SU, Marconi and Olympic. There is no way I could support Marconi or Olympic if they were in the A-League and conversely I could not expect my Italian or Greek mates to support United. That is what holds back any of these clubs from truly appealing to the general public. Many of the "wogs" know Lowy's association with Sydney City "Hakoah" and still see Sydney FC (rightly or wrongly) as a reincarnation of that club. The fact that they rejected Parramatta Stadium as their home base strengthened that perception.

 

Just look at this forum and you get the idea of what is happening. We not only have the Cros, Greeks and Italians, we have them all, including the "skips" who have always loved the game. Tomorrow, I am going to KT's with a Skip, an Italian and a Maltese team mate (sounds like the start of a joke). All of us are going to see WSW play in what we hope will be a good atmosphere. All of us are interested in watching football played at the highest level. This team has united our interest.

 

So to answer your question directly. I love SU. I am excited about WSW and hope that it does everything I imagine that it can.

Sorry i just got the drift that you were coming to the match to see if WSW was the club for you, didn't realise you were a member already!

 

So do you think from your general Sydney United supporter whom wouldn't be supporting an a-league club or anything yet, they are open to do so. Or is Sydney united seen as their one and only club.

Boban, United's crowd sizes aren't exactly excellent. If they rock up to this game, why aren't they turning up to the season proper.

 

I also would say that comment is quite dismissive of Blacktown City in particular. They have a bloody long history in Football.

 

So, it comes back to the money grab.

 

I know that the crowds aren't excellent, and I reckon I've outlined why in another thread. It's pretty boring IMHO. The fan base however, still exists and still follows football even if they don't attend regularly.

 

I know Blacktown City pretty well, and while they have a long history, they have never had the numbers supporting their club, that the likes of the 3 big ethnic based clubs have had. Just look at the stats mate and then look at the crowd at last year's grand final between SU and Olympic. Blacktown City would not attract that crowd. It's just a fact. But that said, it is not meant to be a derogatory or dismissive remark.

 

 

It's a short term view by Sydney Utd, if someone new to the game turns up expecting to pay $5 and feels ripped off, they will be lost to the game. It's a wasted chance to expand the profile of the club and that of the beautiful game at large. Of course those of us on this forum are already hooked and will be there, unfortunately we alone are not enough to sustain and grow any club, let alone an entire league.

 

Mate, why would a newby expect to pay $5? Honestly, that I reckon it is a ridiculously low figure. I said it before, kids are free, so $15 is SFA for a night out for most people. A storm in a tea cup.

 

And just to make it perfectly clear, by agreeing that it is a "money grab", I don't reckon it's greedy. They just see it as a good opportunity to make some money for the club. Why do people begrudge them a profit?

Again, I can't speak for everyone, but I reckon the majority will be open to WSW being their club, even if some of them see it as being a distant second to Sydney United in terms of their loyalties. I personally don't see it a competition between the two clubs, nor any need for divided loyalties other than maybe on nights like tomorrow.

 

Once WSW is not owned by the FFA, then I reckon it will get even better. They love their football after all.

That being said, if the Wanderers draw old fans out of the woodwork, then that's a positive for football in general....

 

Which is exactly what they have done with me.

From a marketing perspective its a poor play thus why it hasn't been marketed. United are probably coming from the perspective, that the few thousand fans they might potentially alienate will be more than made up for in the price difference from say $5-$15. Attracting supporters unfortunately isn't their prerogative, its ours.

 

Fortunately kids are still free so it still represents a relative cheap night for families.

 

That being said I hope it doesn't affect the crowd and that SU makes a tidy sum. The game has a real buzz and I look forward to our boys getting a thorough hit out.

 

Thats great to hear Boban! Its that sort of spirit that will make this club a powerhouse, finally combining the Wests resources and support for the greater good. Like you I've brought Turk, African, Italian mates along to the trials, thats Western Sydney for you, our greatest asset.

Boban, the $5 is based on the previous trials, and in conjunction with the late advice on entry fee it would be reasonable for people to expect to pay about the same as the other trials. Of course I don't begrudge Sydney United a profit, I'm talking about Sydney United wasting the chance to attract repeat customers to their club and games, rather than limit it to one big night.
