Tony Popovic has been announced as the inaugural coach of the Western Sydney team.

Having quit his role as Assistant of Crystal Palace, he has been in talks with both Sydney clubs in recent weeks. He has signed with the Western Sydney team to take the helm in it's first season.

Quite amazing that he was always mentioned at the fan forums and they've signed him up. Are they really listening then?

That's what I took out of it. That they actually went and got a coach that a lot of the fans wanted. Shows they are really listening and taking note of what the fans say, and bodes well for the future imo.

gutted if thats all the news they will be announcing today.

was there any mention of when the name and colours will be announced.

Nope. They'll milk the media space for the next few weeks, which is probably a wise strategy.

We'll probably get homeground and name/colours in the same presser. Announcement of name and colours and kit at the home ground (hopefully Parra)

Click on the sound slider at bottom right ... they are often at a default of zero volume, you have to slide it up to get volume.

Just watched ... great interview, popa had good things to say and I like his attitude already. he spoke of people wanting a team they can back, but also wanting a team that likes to win and does win - getting the balance right being the challenge. Roll on ...

It's good to finally have a coach.

I think we'll have the other information, like colours, name, and home grounds before June.

I agree. Fast forward 12 months and will we be regretting this decision or bathing in the glory? Some one out there can build this team and turn in a championship winning side, is it Big popa? time will tell.

Lyall Gorman will commence his role as Exceutive Chairman on Monday, May 21st, so expect to be drip feed the information that we seek from that date.

Overall, I was impressed that popa conveyed all the right messages that we, the tragics have espoused at the fan forums.

He was also able to maintain the corporate line (the odd smirk was evident) as well as playing his cards close to his chest. popa may be a handy poker player.

I'd expect that Fox Sports will have Bozza on tonight's News and Views program which airs @ 9pm, so expect him to have some further insights and or layout his inside info. in regard to the release of name, colours, signings etc.

Here's a little ditty I knocked up a few days ago and posted in the chant section in anticipation of popa's appointnent.

If we can improve on it great, otherwise, start learning the words fellas so we can provide our boss with the vocal support he deserves should he achieve our lofty expectations.

The ditty is based of the popular children's TV show theme song - Flipper. ie: insert popa wherever Flipper appears and vary the references to the sea to relate to our flat and sunburnt terrain

We know our popa, popa, knows every answer,

no-one can be, much smarter than he,

and we know popa, lives in a world full of wonder (possibly insert westies),

chilling there-under, under the poplar tree!

    • This we over achieved is bollocks. With that squad we didn't over achieve or under achieve we achieved. Ok it was un balanced, but it's a better squad than Adelaide, the bulls etc.
    • Should being the.word. Also it isn't just the time, it kills momentum.
    • Staj has a very underpowered squad who overachieved, he copped criticism the whole time whilst giving us entertaining football. Since we put that bloody star on our crest we have been abysmal as a club. Victory were always a good team but under performed anyone can see that looking at our teams on paper. Some of our superstar attackers didn't step up when we needed them to for more than bits and pieces of the match. Overall, from what this team looked like at the end of last season to now is chalk and cheese. Dont campare Rudans first year finals team which was stacked to this team, give that team to Staj and we would see a different outcome. Our club has been broken for a long time and it needed a massive reset to build a proper foundation on, not just base it on one man like we did with Popa. We saw how that ended when he left. Management to players the culture became horrific. The culture now and what was achieved is something to build on for next year which we have not had in a long time and its such a positive for us to look forward to. How have we not enjoyed the roller coaster of the undbeaten streak since Jan? 58 goals in the season? Entertaining games? Comebacks which we would never have even considered possible in the past? Yeah we bombed out and it sucks but far out, we should be looking forward to seeing what he has got in store next instead of bagging the guy.
