First half was very poor and second half was back to form, at least for the Bombers anyway!

GWS played well but for any young team, it's the 4 quarter effort that's tough. Some good signs though!

Next Friday night will be awesome, Bombers v Cats... with four players to come back into the squad hopefully our start will be better next week.

You'll see the Bombers run come to an end next week. The Cats will absolutely tear them apart.

Tonight will be an interesting test... recent record suggests that we (Bombers) have only won once and the average losing margin is 10 goals... so as long as we put in a spirited performance, I'll be happy... BUT records are meant to be broken... hopefully tonight's the night!

Hopefully any spirits your boys play with tonight will be pre-approved by the relevant bodies. ;)

I don't know what you need to take to be more accurate as the Bombers were missing that tonight.

The Cats were able to score whereas the Bombers couldn't...and there you have the game.

The stats said the Bombers were the better team but if you could swap the numbers between "goals" and "points" then there you have it!

Stats shmats, Essendon never "looked like" the better team.

Geelong's efficient attack style is a joy to watch. Bombers need to have played more finals to compete with the likes of Geelong, Sydney, Hawthorn. Their time will come in a year of two. Problem is how patient will everyone be with Hird by the end of 2013?

lol the swans

i know the AFL said they let the community have a say on the giants colours and name but i will never believe that the majority of people wanted orange white and puke black as their colours or the giants as their name

i have been to one pre season match swans vs calton or something, dont remember much about it apart from it was at blacktown, they are great athletes even if they take performance enhancing drugs but i really cant stand the administration of the afl and some of the pro afl media, get rid of the administration and the pro afl media then its something i can enjoy occasionally

also went to a match between the kangaroos and someone else when i was about 8 or 10....dont remember much of that either :P and i met the swans when i was very young i remember seeing tony lockett but not much else so i have done a few afl things when i was very very young but its all a blur

All of that playing in Canberra has really paid dividends, the expectation about the first home game has gone through the roof...

It's empty. As I posted in another thread the commentator actually said "people have turned up in their droves" - it is amazing the urge they have to spew out propaganda even in the face of an empty stadium. Just like that officer in charge f propaganda in Saddams Hussins regime who was saying "we are winnin the war" even as US tanks were rolling into the city

Some questions...

Would the Skoda Fails have done any better crowd-wise if it wasn't Mother's Day/Adelaide?

Would the Skoda Fails have done any better crowd-wise if they'd developed their Blacktown base into a proper oval?

What does it say about their idiot administration that they have split their loyalists amongst way too many interests (i.e. Canberra, Sydney, south and western NSW and Melbourne)

How does broadcasting a game on 7Mate help the game and the club's profile in Sydney?

Are the hundred of millions of dollars invested in this joke of a Potemkin franchise going to need topping up for years just to sustain the farce?

Where are the thousands of members and juniors that have supposedly got on board the Orange and Black Clowns membership drive?

In years gone by there would've been all manner of jokes made about old soccer and the small crowds at places like Pratten Park in the NSL era etc...it was supposedly a sign of the sport's unattractiveness to Australians. Well what the **** does the sham at Homebush look like to those aerial ping pongers?!

All afl in Sydney is now on 7mate... And every swans and every gws match goes out every week.

Who played at pratten park manfred?

Sydney Olympic had it as their home ground back in the 80s.

If the deal for AFL broadcasting in Sydney is that it's shown on 7Mate well that again reflects the main concern of the powers that be...it's all about maximising interest in the areas where ASL is already strong (i.e. Victoria, SA, WA, Tas) and paying lip service where it isn't.

Of course... Just assumed it was always belmore I guess.

I guess it's a trade off, it's not the main station but guarantees them the ability to broadcast 4 live afl matches including both Sydney games every weekend. Before 7 were rarely willing to broadcast it live.

Well considering 7 in Sydney are broadcasting a repeat of their new Aussie drama from last Sunday it seems a little piss-weak to not want to put the Orange & Black Clowns on their main station...or perhaps the programmers know that more people would want to sit back and watch something from last week instead of a live Skoda Fail game.

Actually I just had a geek at the Melbourne TV programming and the game today isn't even being shown on their 7 network channels. Guess that demonstrates how important the Clowns and the Crows are in the largest AFL market when a Victorian team isn't involved...

i love GWS failing they are a plastic piece of **** team

Please - we'll see who's laughing in 2-3 seasons time.

Have you conveniently forgotten about the Sydney Swans' dark times, in the late 80s - early 90s??

The same issues that GWS has now, the Swannies had then. Attendances below 10,000 AND multiple wooden spoons.

And now look where they are!

Sorry but there is a world of difference between where the Swans were and where the O&B Clowns are.

First off the Swans were coming from an existing club base with tradition and history, transplanted to Sydney where the market was an unknown quantity.

Secondly there was a push very early in the piece to weld the Swans into a greater Sydney landscape partly as seen by the importance based upon private owners and investors who were part of the Sydney social elites (i.e. Mike Willesee, Geoffrey Edelstein, and based on a strict geographical and demographic focus on the SCG.

Thirdly during the Swans so-called dark days whilst there were numerous concessions made to the Swans they were never ever funded in a way that the Skoda Fails have been.

Fourthly even during the worst years of the Swans early history in Sydney then never were too far off getting it right on and off the field, particularly with the likes of Tom Hafey as coach and even though he was a joke personality Warwick Capper as a player.

Come forward 25-30 years and the Clowns have pulled all the wrong levers that the Swans have pulled right. The litmus test can be defined by these visual cues:

SWANS_2013_400original-jersey.jpghome-guernsey_large.jpg?552

Even without a club name or badge you know where the Swans come from. The O&B Clowns on the other hand...well WTF?

The Clowns have virtually no identity (like Melbourne Heart) and are defined more by not what they are than who they are supposed to be. Right now they are not winners, not truly of western Sydney, not of Canberra, not profitable and not doing anything to grow the game. The Swans on the other hand have used their struggle years and the years before that to build up a franchise that anyone can respect.

Just in case you want to remind yourself of the blinkered, racist, dumb-arse mind behind the Orange & Black Clowns...

Record low AFL crowd for GWS home match
Rob Forsaith
19:31 AEST Sun May 12 2013

On and off the field, AFL club Greater Western Sydney were singing the second-year blues on Sunday.

Adelaide dished out a 135-point thumping at Showground Stadium, with a crowd of just 5,830 on hand for the Giants' first game of the year at their Sydney Olympic Park home.

It was the lowest attendance figure for a regular-season AFL match since 5,083 showed up to Fitzroy's one and only win in 1996, the Lions' final season before merging with Brisbane.

GWS coach Kevin Sheedy flagged the fact it was Mother's Day and nearly a third of the way through the season before their opening game at the venue, which was unavailable earlier due to the Royal Sydney Show.

But the four-time premiership coach seemed let down by the turnout, especially after the Giants far exceeded expectations in their last start.

"We've got to play better than that to attract a crowd," Sheedy said of the team's one-sided loss to the Crows.

"It's a pity because in the end that's how many turned up after a pretty solid performance against Essendon (a 39-point loss) last week.

"...That was probably a reminder of what the Swans have been telling us. (Sydney chairman) Richard Colless says you're going to do it hard early.

"So it just tells everybody how tough it's going to be to build the club.

"We don't have the recruiting officer called the immigration department, recruiting fans for (successful A-League soccer club) Western Sydney Wanderers.

"We've got to start a whole new ballpark and go and find fans."

The Giants have played away from Sydney since their opening-round derby against the Swans, a major hurdle in the hunt for crowds.

Sheedy, renowned for his outside-the-box ideas, had a novel solution to get the Giants onto their Olympic Park base earlier in the year.

"To get here in the middle of May (is not good enough)," Sheedy said.

"Even though the NAB Cup final might not have been played yet, we can still move in and start a season earlier.

"Just like they have in England ... the FA Cup is still running (at the same time as the Premier League) ... so you can have a two-season prong.

"We've got to get our game here earlier."

Sheedy also took a swipe at the AFL for scheduling Gold Coast and GWS on Mother's Day.

What a fücking idiotic presumptuous jumped up nobody with absolutely no fücking idea as to how to actually make his fail club worth following for anyone out in the west.

The first best step that the Skoda Fails can actually take to start winning fans...get rid of Sheedy.
