  • Guangzh-Ouch As Wanderers Run Riot In China

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have demolished Chinese Super League team Guangzhou R&F 5-0 in the second match of their Asian pre-season tour.

In hot conditions the Wanderers took 32 minutes to open the scoring, wunderkind midfielder Martin Lo carved out a chance that was finished by Brendon Santalab. There was no further scoring in the first half.

The second half team was Ante Covic, Shannon Cole, Dean Heffernan, Iacopo La Rocca, Jerome Polenz, Jake McGing, Jason Trifiro, Aaron Mooy, Nick Olsen, Labinot Haliti and Kwabena Appiah.

The new line-up saw immediate rewards when Labinot Haliti was put through on goal by Aaron Mooy, the wing-forward making the score 2-0. 7 minutes later it was three, Haliti again, this time on a through ball by Dean Heffernan.

On the hour a raft of changes were made, as Mark Bridge, Michael Beauchamp, Tomi Juric and Hersi were substituted on in place of Cole, Appiah, McGing & Haliti.

The last 20 minutes belong to Hersi, who scored from just inside the penalty box to make it 4-0 with strong work by Juric to hold and then lay-off a pass to the winger. Aaron Mooy delivered a killer ball to Hersi who slammed it home to make it 5-0 and a thumping victory.

With Hersi, Santalab and Haliti in good form, the midfield working well to create chances and build the play, and the defence keeping a clean sheet, this looks like the epitome of a pre-season match and one that I'm sure the squad and coaching staff will be extremely please with. So far this pre-season the biggest problem being faced by Tony Popovic is who out of all the impressive performers he's going to start. Which is always the best problem a manager can have.

The Wanderers next match is against Tokyo Verde on Thursday the 12th of September.

Someone has suggested on SST Facebook page that the Chinese team were made up of 18yr olds. Can anyone confirm this?

That is what I heard. However, it is only a pre-season match and I gather the purpose was to give the squad a taste of what it is like to travel through Asia in preparation for the ACL.

Comments on 442 indicate that it wasn't the first team for R&F (http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/281468,wanderers-five-star-show-against-guangzhou.aspx) so no sign particularly of Eddy Bosnar. No matter one way or the other...considering we have SFA pre-season for 2012/13 the amount of game time and the value Popa and the squad are getting from this must be doing us a world of good. With Santa, Tomi and now Lo sticking their hands up there are some pleasing signs re new faces in the red and black...

It's a pretty sh*tty "highlights" video, isn't it? 2 out of 5 goals and lots of barely half chances. It's obviously just one of the staff members filming, but you'd assume we could at least see all the goals.

And that Guangzhou team looked quite young from the vision (as has been previously mentioned on here).

Tour seems a bit of a wasted opportunity to me and maybe put together too hasitly. I am sure there are some positives coming from this like player bonding. But the chance to play quality teams in Asia before the ACL infront of a crowd, a chance to grow the Wanderers brand, games aren't televised and no crowds. Poor marketing.

Maybe the team would of been better playing Rockdale, BWE or SU. Seems they would of been better opposition and prep for the A League.

I think the main purpose of the trip is to acclimatise the team to all the travelling and different cultures/playing styles that they will encounter in ACL.

But yes, it does seem a little hastily organised.

I think you're severely over-estimating what a pre-season tour for an A-League club is for.

Please elaborate and enlighten me on what it is for.

I was under the impression it was to prepare them for the upcoming season

The tour was, from my understanding, used to come up with conditioning plans for the players so that when we have periods of travel the strength and conditioning staff can get the players as best prepared as possible in a little amount of time.. simples..

Thanks, this makes sense. Would explain why it seems hastily put together. I still think it is a bit of a missed opportunity to grow the Wanderers brand, but it was probably too hard to oraganise in a short period.

A pre-season tour of Asia in a season we have our first go at the ACL isn't about marketing, growing the brand, playing in front of Asian crowds or televising matches played on a training ground. It's about preparing to play the ACL, preparing for Asian conditions and travel, and preparing for the upcoming season.

At least we went there to play football. Unlike the ESFC Magical Mystery Tour / junket (let's do some sightseeing and ride the gondolas in Venice) of Italy :woah:
