Homebush is Not Home For Western Sydney

by Michael Huguenin on May 21, 2012

The new A-League team in the west of Sydney has taken a significant first step.

The announcement of Tony Popovic on Thursday as manager is an impressive decision that will hopefully give the new entity a decent kick-start on the pitch.

Popovic's name was regularly brought up as a preferred coaching target at the Football Federation of Australia's (FFA) fan forums that were held in different parts of western Sydney through April and May.

The fan forums were a brilliant initiative by the FFA and will hopefully become a standard move for the development of any future A-League teams.

While it is hard to imagine that the FFA's search for a head coach was based solely on the suggestions of football fans in Sydney's western suburbs, the selection of Popovic did lend an element of credibility to the whole fan forum concept.

Popovic begins the development of the new club on the pitch but it is off the pitch that will play a much larger role in whether a club in western Sydney can be successful.

One of the biggest early decisions that the new club will have to make will be where they will play.

A club's home stadium is a critical factor in its identity, psyche and success.

I didn't realise the Swans' numbers had dropped so much. Especially since they are near the top of the table currently aren't they?

My estimate of the size of the GWS cheer squad was favourable. In reality they were all families and occupied only the first 3 rows of one bay. Probably not even 50 people.

The FFA needs to ensure the derby is at Parramatta Stadium. If it's a sellout then that's a good news story. If people miss out attending, then so be it. Those people will try harder to attend the next derby.

The FFA needs to realise that 21,000 sold out at Parra is far more awesome compared to say 25,000 at Homebush. They shouldn't focus on the 4,000 fans who missed out, but instead praise the 21,000 who turned up at the game.

    Remember the fans, FFA.

Honestly, except when we are handing over our hard earned Pacific Pesos, when does/has the FFA ever think of the fans let alone put them first?

21,000 sell out at Parra would be awesome. If the FFA rewards the fans by taking the game away from the club's regular home ground then that is not a reward at all but a kick in the guts.

In terms of atmosphere and appearance it needs to be Parra.

However if finances win the day it will be Homebush.

They've done a decent job in the formation of our club to date.

I hope afl rots and dies in this part of town.. What a pathetic excuse of a sport.. If only the real football had the luxuries in this country .. It's only a matter of time..

If you're a swans fan, why would you bother going to a game that's going to be one sided? You'd rather go and watch a game that they could potentially lose. I call myself a GWS fan, although I haven't been to a game due to the fact that most of them seem to be scheduled the same time as saturday afternoon sport, and the 2 or 3 other ones I haven't been able to make for whatever other reason. Theres a game this weekend I think, which was literally the first one of the season that I could make when I checked the draw back before round 1.

I prefer that we play our games at a sold out parra stadium than half full homebush. but i wouldnt mind the last darby of the season there as some kind of neutral venue for both teams. like a darby decider. :)

this is a sound idea... a game each in the city & out west, with the decider in the middle - which way will the Resistance sway....

if you were going to play any derby match there it would be the first one as its likely to be best attended. Best just not to go near the stadium :)

    Nice bump.

Its interesting reading the thoughts of supporters during the embryonic stages of the club.

lol thank you i expected this thread would get closed straight after i bump it :P but i agree its very interesting to go to old threads and look at the views early on it makes me proud of how the club listened, yes obviously we said no to ANZ and we are at ANZ but it was really the only option the entire no to anz is something they listened to and that makes me happy because they listened to us when it comes to everything
