Yeah...I leave fruit out for the possums most nights esp in Winter- both ringtails and brushtails... so I kind of have a connection to them (not that I see them regularly, but I know they're there)

The cat is just following his instincts...but I feel very bad that i didn't get him indoors early enough to prevent what happened.

you cant blame yourself these things happened, similar thing happened when a bird drowned in my horses water(we put a stick in there so it cant happen anymore) its one of those things that you just cant blame yourself for

One of our cats is completely deaf, Albino, 2 different coloured eyes (so possibly blind in one). We can't let her out because she can't hear cars coming etc.

A friend rescued her as a kitten. Found her running in between cars in traffic on parra rd. Street cat. No collar or ID tag. No chip.

For the first 6-12 months that we had her she would just attack you for no reason. You would be asleep on the lounge and she would jump up and start trying to claw your face off.

Everytime she did something like that I would pick her up and try to calm her down. Never get angry or scold her.

Nowadays she is like a dog. Follows you around, jumps up and licks your face etc.

Sometimes, with the right treatment, the most feral of cats can become the most devoted and affectionate of pets.

A few months ago, just after school, out of the windows in our staffroom, one of my colleagues spotted a little,  mainly white kitten dash across the road - only 2 lanes, but a busy road, esp just after school.

He and one of the wildest kids in  Yr 7 followed it into a neighbouring garden, and after quite a bit of effort, and scratches right up to their elbows, managed to capture this filthy, bedraggled,  totally feral little creature.

We put her into a box., hissing and growling...my colleague took her home...

After only a day or two, she would purr as soon as anyone went near her....she's  now .....adorable ....

  • 4 weeks later...

Sad day yesterday with one of our dogs. We have 2 Jack Russel's, brother and sister.

Took the day off yesterday to look at the boy (Milo) as his foot looked a little sore and he, well, he appeared sad (he's normally a 100-miles and hour). So local vet seemed to think it was soft tissue damage and bed rest and pain killers/anti-inflammatory. Anyway, he got worse as the day went on, one foot became two (back legs) then eventually he was having trouble walking. Late last night took him to the local vet hospital who referred us to the bigger hospital at Homebush.

He was there last night (which distressed his sister, Molly, was a bit all over the place - first time separated in there entire life, 5 years), and is having an MRI today. They feel it's a disc in his back pushing against his spine. He appears perfectly fine apart from the fact its like he is sliding on ice with his back paws. Now to deal with the insurance companies - wish me luck!

Milo update: Received a call late last night to say that he had the MRI and they found a bulged disc in his back. They are looking at him again this morning with the specialist and will make a call if its something they can leave to fix on its own (I assume with the aid of steroids or similar) or if surgery is required.

The prognosis so far was better than we had anticipated, the thought that he may not need surgery is good but we'll see once we get the call today.

Good news is that they said he is in good spirits and happy. His sister is loving life at home, get lots of cuddles and treats but she is a little sad, missing her big brother.

Update on Milo Watch: He ended up having surgery yesterday. Surgeon called me yesterday morning saying that was the best option (but the most expensive) and that they were fasting him in the morning (I'm thinking, he's being fed in the morning and night? He won't want to come home).

So, they did the surgery and got a call yesterday afternoon saying that it went well, but basically what had happened was a disc had disintegrated between the 11th and 12th vertebrae and the fragments inflame and put pressure on the spine. They said he looked good after the operation but will call me this morning to give me an update. Fingers crossed.

Yeah they're a really great breed. She's 13 now and is starting to get bad arthritis in her hips (like most old people) but other than that she's going strong.

She's doing well at 13 to be starting to get bad arthritis. It's true about owners having their dogs personality ! Mine was playful n ate a lot.....just like his owner! :D

Milo Update: The surgeons said he pulled up well from that and we visited him last night – for a little dog, he has a 6†long incision on his back and his back legs still aren’t working. The surgeon said that is normal whilst there is inflammation but can take days for him to gain movement – then it’s rehab and such.

Throws a massive spanner in the works with our holiday next month and where to put him as the kennels won’t take him, but we might be able to book him at the hospital itself as a special border (costs a fortune). At least (I hope) insurance will cover the main surgery stuff (up to 80% anyway) as that’s $10k+.

I'm looking into getting another Lab, would like a male chocolate , they're great fun loving dogs! :D

Would love to get a big dog like a Lab, Bordie (wife loves Dalmatians) but they're so freaking big and our house/backyard is quite small :(

Only problem with a border is their energy. Being a working dog they need a fair bit of exercise. I have a working dog (an ACD) and she happily does my 8km run a few times a week with energy to spare :S

Labs don't need as much, but they are bigger than bordies too

Of course! All dogs need to get a good run and be entertained, just that things like working dogs need more.

Labs need it because they also get so fat so quickly lol

I have 4 chickens, two are getting older and have stopped laying. I don't think they'd be good for eating, but would like to 'replace' them with two younger ones that would provide a constant quantity of eggs.

So do I need to sharpen my axe? Try and prepare them for eating? Anyone ever done this?
