  • Haliti's Havok Brings Wanderers To Brink Of Premiership

    mack

A brace from Labinot Haliti & a match sealer to Iacopo La Rocca has brought the Western Sydney Wanderers to the brink of their maiden A-League Premiership in a 3-1 win over Melbourne Heart.

The three points puts them 8 points clear of the Central Coast Mariners, and broke the all-time Australian League record for wins in a row, taking the current tally to 10. Central Coast must win their match tomorrow against Brisbane Roar to keep the title race alive. Western Sydney were well on top early in the wet conditions. This match was vital to the finals chances of Melbourne Heart and their desperation manifested in a thuggish display throughout the match.

4 minutes in Heart conceded a free kick just outside the box. Aaron Mooy's delivery to back post gave Nikolai Topor-Stanley a free header from a tight, narrow angle and the big central defender should have hit the target rather than the side netting.

Mark Bridge tripping of Jonatan Germano put Western Sydney on the back foot. In the first of a number of unsavoury incidents involving the Melbourne Heart supporters, one of their number shined a laser at Ante Covic as he tried to line up his wall. Luckily for Covic the shot was aimed directly in the middle of the goal, no problem for the keeper.

After 20 minutes Aaron Mooy, who was playing as the central attacking midfielder in the absence of Shinji Ono, turned his marker and unleashed from the edge of the area but like Mehbratu before him could only find the opposition keeper. 7 had passed when Mooy used his skill to create the opening goal of the match. Mooy's strong work in the box in gathering a blocked cut-back allowed him to find Haliti along the floor. Haliti had made space for himself by backing away from the Heart defensive line, his first-time shot on the left foot beating Andrew Redmayne, smacking the far post and rebounding to bulge the net to the delight of Haliti who made his way to celebrate in front of the several hundred travelling supporters.

When only 6 minutes remained in the first half Melbourne Heart struck back. The most dangerous Heart player Mehbratu was fed by Fred and was encouraged to shoot by the 6,000 or so home supporters. Beauchamp, Poljak & La Rocca all failed to close down quickly enough, the three Wanderers failing to converge in time as he let fly with his right foot. It cracked off boot, a pile driver from at least 25 meters out, swerving away from the outstretched Covic, whistling past his hands like a gunshot. Western Sydney had a scare in the last minutes of the half, a free kick not being cleared, Heart headed the ball toward goal, it evaded Covic but thankfully for the league leaders the final touch came from a clearly offside position.

The second half was more of the same, poor defense from Heart, thuggish tackling from Heart and a goal from Haliti, this one on the hour mark. La Rocca had stepped up from his usual defensive midfield position to threaten on goal. Haliti drifted between defenders, Simon Colosimo looked to shut down La Rocca but the Italian knocked the ball through into the path of Haliti who swept the ball over the head of Redmayne to put the Wanderers back in front.

Aaron Mooy had to be replaced when clattered into disgracefully by Richard Garcia, joining Polenz as the second Wanderer to be substituted due to injury. Youssouf Hersi should have had his great cross rewarded with an assist, Dino Kresinger getting a free sight on goal only yards out. Unfortunately Kresinger could only steer his header straight into the path of Redmayne.

Just when it looked like that miss could help Heart back into the match they shot themselves in the foot. Simon Colosimo picking up two yellow cards in nearly as many minutes for two stupid challenges on Kresinger, the second he slide in late and recklessly and wasn't even close to the ball, Ben Williams showing no hesitation in sending the Heart veteran from the field.

While the red card may have cruelled the hopes of the much needed comeback for the Heart, it was Iacopo La Rocca who ended the game as a contest. A Jason Trifiro cross was cleared only as far as Poljak, who noticed that La Rocca was free on the other flank. His looping cross found it's target, as the Heart defense claimed in vain for what would have been an incorrect offside call, La Rocca calmly brought the ball down with a brilliant first touch to put the ball in front of him, followed by a pin-point accurate bending shot that curved around the stranded Redmayne.

If Central Coast fail to win their match against Brisbane Roar on Sunday, Western Sydney will secure their maiden Premiership in their inaugural year, an incredible achievement. Labinot Haliti is one of a number of Wanderers yet to sign a new contract for next season, his brace here and his match-winner against Central Coast are making it nearly impossible for Popovic to allow Haliti to leave. He looks the most dangerous of all the forwards in the squad and will likely lead the line if not for the Derby & against his former club Newcastle, all the way into the finals series.

The Wanderers next match is against Sydney FC at Parramatta Stadium, Parramatta, on Saturday the 23rd of March at 7:45pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

I think we might see Tarek and Kubi on the right hand side with JP and Hersi out.

They've been down that side all season in the youth league

injuries and suspensions for the derby and the business end of the season, not good.

would be good to see kubi coming in for hersi.

polenz will be a big loss. hopefully he will be good for the finals.

if both mooy or ono is injured then that will be a problem.

i just hope that brisbane get something against ccm, that way in the derby we dont need to risk any injuries at all.

Another great result yesterday. In the end if was quite easy. Most of everything has been said.

Dino should have scored with that header. Haliti is surely now number 1 given his delicate touch around the goal. But yeah agree with what others are saying he probably plays in place of Hersi meaning Dino will come back in.

Great effort for the away fans heard them loud and clear at times! Great work boys!

I just saw what happened with the Heart fan against our brother on YouTube.

What a dog act. F*cken cowardly. King hit the guy when he wasn't looking.

    Is the brother ok?

Again 99% of crowd well behaved. One idiot does that should be banned for life

I'd like to see Tarek given a go at RB in Polenz's absence. He attacks well and has pace. Still Jerome has probably been our best this year and helps make Hersi look good with his decoy runs and link play.

As long as we have either Mooy or Ono I still think we are ok, as we can play both la Rocca and Poljak in the middle. La Rocca could be our man coming in to the last few weeks and finals. He's assured on the ball, can make an incisive pass, tackles well and can score goals.

Popa has rotated players all season.  We have won games without our "top" players - really all of our players are "top" in their own way.  What we have over other teams is that we can change our shape and attack to suit the game, situation, players.  Remember the 2 games we won with 10 men.  The team just reshaped and carried on as if everything was normal.  Popa has them weill trained to fill all gaps no matter who is playing - so I trust him to work around whatever injury/pulls/soreness some players have.

On a related topic, I have noticed that Popa is very respectful of our players health and fitness. He does not play people with even a little niggle.  He looks after them, gets them proper treatment, rests them and puts them back on for the amount of time he has decided they are ready for.  Read the words that both Ono and Hersi have said about how they have grown under Popa's leadership after they both had about 2 years out with nagging injuries.  Why did Ono knock back 2 million from China and take $750,000 from the Wanderers???  He is in the last phase of his career, and he is being looked after in a pleasant and safe country, and he can end his career in a few years time with a winning team in a league that is growing better every year.

So ...  why this small rant??  Let's just trust Popa to do what he has always done:  loook after our guys and put the best team with the best strategy on the park next week in the derby.

    Go Popa!  Go Wanderers!

And - well played last night Chaps!!

Hope the invader gets police charges, not just a ban.  And if none of this happens when we have guys out after hurting no-one I will not be happy.

    What a win!!

Well done to the RBB, hope those involved are ok.

And well done to the team! Haliti is just lethal, iv said it before, he can be a bit of a luxury player but in our set-up its perfect, not discounting his effort either, he works hard just not as effective as say Dino. Le Fondre of the a-league!

Great goal by La Rocca, he was superb. Could have been 7-1.

Sad part is our injuries and suspensions now. Polenz is a HUGE blow, namely because Cole and Elrich hardly fill that gap. Mooy can be covered somewhat, but if its for a few games thats a huge loss too. I hope we at least get Mooy back for Newcastle.

Hersi, is off course a huge loss. But its one game. It takes alot of class from the team without Hersi, Polenz and Mooy but we just have to be smart and play simple against the smurfs and we will kick them out of the top 6!

If Hersi and Polenz are indeed out for the derby i think itll be time to throw Elrich and Visconte into the mix even if only on the bench. They both have something to prove and something to give.

    Up the mighty wanderers!

I'd say Elrich will be on the bench as the only real option for Popa as a back up defender, whilst Visconte is a far less likely chance. It all depends on the fitness of both Mooy and Shinji. If both Shinji and Mooy are fit enough to play then La Rocca might be squeezed out onto the bench, plus there is still Trifiro as another sub. If Popa decides to rest one or both of the two creative midfielders then Visconte might get a bench spot. I can't see him getting a start. Cole will be a starter in Polenz's place and don't discount Appiah Kubi...the lad has shown some nice form when brought on to replace Hersi...my only concern with him is his defensive skills aren't as strong as Youssouf's, which would put more pressure on Cole.

love the white shorts. they add clarity, make the whole kit look sharper. the black makes it look grubby and ill-defined, like the colours have run in the wash.

Great story in the Herald today. A good news story for a change!

"Labinot Haliti never wanted to leave the Newcastle Jets. The Kosovo-born refugee was part of the fabric. He spent four years over two stints and played 69 games for them, each appearance played with the fervour of a man appreciating a second chance at life. He had an affinity with the Hunter faithful matched by only a few.

Then the 27-year-old joined Western Sydney. ''That is the beauty of this game,'' Haliti said. ''Newcastle was a good place. I still have mates there and a close connection to the city. But this is something else. The people of western Sydney needed a club. You can see the passion. It has only been eight or nine months and the people are all wearing the jerseys, and all come [to the games].''
