  • Wanderers Chasing Ballack

Not to be outdone by A-League rival Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers is chasing the signature of off-contract Germany star Michael Ballack, The World Game can reveal.

With the Sky Blues basking in the glory of landing Italian star Alessandro Del Piero on a two-year deal, it has emerged Wanderers has launched an audacious bid of its own for one of Germany's greatest ever players, who's contract at Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen is up.

It is believed representatives of Wanderers have been talking to Ballack's representatives over the past week, with a view to sealing a $1.6 million one-season deal.

Wanderers has filled its five Visa allocations already, but Ballack would still be able to qualify as a non-visa foreign player, eligible by residency in Australia.

In a mouth-watering sub-plot to the A-League's first Sydney derby, Ballack and Del Piero would face off when the two clubs meet for the first time on Saturday 20 October at Parramatta Stadium, should the deal happen.

Ballack is a veteran of 98 appearances for Germany, which he also captained. The 35-year-old midfielder was one of Roman Abramovich's first high profile recruitment coups joining Chelsea from Bayern Munich in 2006, before returning to Bayer Leverkusen in 2010.

The news comes in a ground-breaking week of high profile signings for the A-League, with reports on Wednesday linking Newcastle Jets with the $1 million signing of English striker Emile Heskey on a one-year deal.

    With what money?

Wasn't there a report that WSW had been given the green light to chase ADP by NRMA who would have cough up the dosh for him? Could it be the same with Ballack?

How does that fit with this from gorman:

"Our connection with our community won’t ever be around the individual signing of one player. It will be around our ongoing contribution as a community asset and catalyst for change for young boys and girls in the Western Sydney region over a long and sustainable period of time. And that’s our brand equity."

not saying it wont be great, but it doesnt fit with what they have said thus far

That was all good and well up until Campbeltown and ADP, we need to generate more interest and if it's on the FFA's books then i'd run with it!

    Oh. My. God.

Ballack is the entire reason why I love football. I remember watching him in the 2002 WC and just loving his style of play and the way he led the team.

My favourite player of all time and my footballing idol. I'd love for this to happen in oh so many ways...

I have 4 jerseys of his: Germany 06, Chelsea FC 06/07, Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen (the latter two with no name/number)

Would be incredible for WSWFC, the A-League and football in Australia in general.

    :D

The NSW's based clubs appear to be going in hard and may be trying to generate other interest in the TV rights deal which is currently being negotiated.

An extra % increase on the reported amount of 40 million, may paste over any defiencies that may be incurred by chasing headline marquee players to their squads.

Gotta say thou, we asked the club to not sign any superannuation fund top up seeking, has a been, over the hill, marquee players.

Ballack does not fit that description and would be a sensational acquisition for our midfield.

A second German player, what is this meant to be, Veztern Sydney Bavaria?

But seriously, as much as I'd love us to sign him, I thought we didn't have the funds.

Melbourne Heart haven't been told of this rule on MQ not being included in the VISA spots.

One of our VISA players has to leave for Ballack to come in.

LOL. And you call us a faceless, corporate, 'Bling FC' football club. The irony if this is true is so monumentally overwhelming, I'm actually lost for words. Your club, The FFA and Gormless Gorman have bloody lied to you, and every other football supporter in this country. No doubt it would be an asset to the league overall though. (I support this, don't get me wrong) But. . . .

"We have no money", "We are not about big signings, unlike our cross town counterparts, we engage the community" etc. . . . - These things were said by those directly involved with your club. (Not direct quotes, but much the like)

What utter bullshit. If this happens, take a step back, and see if you can still call yourselves the 'club for the working class'
