And in all honesty the AFL does not give a **** if Football/NRL people don't follow us. It's not them they are trying to hook anyway.

In other news,

Congrats to Gold Coast for belting the Dee's. tracking very nicely for a team that is supposed to be worse than Giants.

That's right... both the Giants and the Suns teams are there for expat Vic/SA/WA/Tas/NT supporters to have as their second team (and maybe become their first team) and also to turn up to see an AFL game. If they get some local support then great also (it worked for the Swans after 30 years!).

Fat chance if that will work on me... and I'll be doing everything in my power trying to get my children supporting the Bombers!

Also, am happy for Gold Coast too, but it helps that they have the son of God playing for them!

Please explain Folau and Hunt then if the two new clubs weren't trying to attract NRL fans or more likely kids who idolised these two?

And you can easily make a case for the Suns being all about expats from AFL forced states but the O&B Clowns? According to Sheedy/McGuire-logic the Western Suburbs expats are more likely to enjoy felafel and pho than Kitchener buns and potato cakes...

“We don’t have the recruiting officer called the immigration department, recruiting fans for (successful A-League soccer club) Western Sydney Wanderers.

this was a quote from kevin sheedy after only 5000 at the giants game turned up. disgraceful.

what do we think of this?

its kicking off on big sports breakfast they want they want wanderers fans to phone in their thoughts.

I dont think Sheedys a racist - but his comments are ignorant. Shows the Sheila's wogs and poofters mentaility is alive and well.

The Wanderers cant possibly have succeeded becaus they engage the community and created and amazing atmosphere. The onlt reason they succeed is because it si a "migrants game"

That is extremely ignorant and a product of Australias isolationist past.

In regards to the Folau thing. (Hunt has proven himself to be pretty tough customer in midfield. Opposition ball winners speak of always checking to see where he is because his tackling is bone crunching) its a bit naive to assume the AFL thought they would win over Rugby League fans.

It's a marketing ploy purely and simply to subtract from NRL column space, How do we do that? We create a scenario in which the giants have a constant rolling story, how? You can see where it's heading.

Edit, I support "the game" in a pure sense, and rarely agree with AFL direction of management and don't agree with above policy at all.

with Folau and Hunt i think they are trying to attract Pacific Islanders to the game

Never had an issue with Hunt since while it was obviously a marketing ploy, you could tell that Hunt had the skills to adapt and be decent at AFL. While on the other hand anyone that followed league knew that Folau would be a failure at a game like AFL.

Cammon man, I think you're being ignorant, your arguement proves he's racist, and what all of us in that area have grown up with all our life.

If you were playing soccer in that region growing up, we were all picked on, doesn't mean we gave in to it!!

How the heck isn't this a racist comment?????????????????????????????    “We don’t have the recruiting officer called the immigration department"

Posted

I don't think anyone actually supported GWS because of izzygonnakickitnohesnot. But that being said Hunt for GC has actually proven himself to be worthy of playing in the AFL.

On sheedys comment....

Yeah I think it was dumb. I still don't think that he's racist.

Here's another way of looking at it (not that I support it, just trying to add a different feel to the debate),

Maybe it's in a way a compliment that's not worded properly? People on this forum say that for years they've been hanging out for a western sydney FC in the a league. No one in sydney was hanging out for a second afl team, therefor it's a harder demographic to target and convert.

Still worded stupidly, and still don't support any codes trying to quash the other.

Posted

Thrillo I think you are more or less right, except that he said it before - it was a rehearsed line - and you've got to then question if he's had the time to think about it why he'd still word it so poorly. There are any number of ways he could have said it: "we are facing an uphill battle; the people of western sydney are soccer people already, and we have our work cut out to show them what our game/team has to offer". Instead he managed to tap into years worth of resentment while painting a large proportion of his target market as un-australian - and regardless of the intent, when the idea that soccer is un-australian is still being sprouted by sections of the press and the AFL then that's what he was doing - and also demonstrating that he completely doesn't understand that target market, therefore sending a message that the Giants as a team/organisation have little idea, an assumption that is already out there.

As it stood as well, it's not a compliment when the suggestion is that the wanderers didn't have to do anything because all their work was done by simply having immigrants in the area.

I'm an aussie rules apologist make no mistake. I much prefer the game itself over the rugby codes. It frustrates me greatly that the AFL has gone about the Giants the way they have. They sure aren't making it easy for themselves.

I think Mark Neald is the AFL coach with the biggest problem this week.

You've basically said what I thought Zip, but think about the cynical and exploitative attitude shown by specifically the O&B Clowns when it comes to Folau. What does it say about the club, the sport, Sheedy etc when using a guy who was a fail at the sport as a marketing tool for spoiling the NRL's narrative, at the cost of $1.4 million per season (thus earning $2.8 million from 2010 onwards). How much of that money could've gone on developing real junior talent in the supposed focus area of the Skoda fails...you know, where all of us Sokkah fans have been shipped in en masse by the Immigration Department to help fatten the numbers for the Wanderers?

Everything that has been done by the Orange and Black Clowns has been based on disrepect, dishonesty, manipulation, fraud, subconscious xenophobia and utterly alien to the genuinely decent aspects of a good sport. I won't fall into the hate the AFL because it ain't football, but it is oh so easy to show disdain and virulent hatred for the shysters, shonks, parasites, xenophobes and ratbags that are using this Potemkin franchise to enrich their pathetic lives.

Posted

a long history of "xenophobia" and now the AFL parade and acclaim their cross cultural prodigy (Majak Daw) - oh the irony

as for Sheedy, surely the defintion of a "boofhead" needs to use him as best practice !

Posted

Majak daw represents the ultimate in classic foOtball xenophobia. You are only an Aussie if you play footy. "I don't like those Sudanese, they come here and form gangs.... That daw bloke though, he's alright isn't he?"

Sheedy, who has been a tireless advocate for Indigenous Australia and diversity, said social inclusion was a key objective of the GIANTS.

“Two weeks ago down in Canberra I was at the Immigration Department to find out the numbers of multicultural people living in Western Sydney so that we can actually invite all the nations that come to live in Australia to create a game against Melbourne later in the year,†said Sheedy.

“It’s a great opportunity for when people come into the West of Sydney that they can actually meet our club as well as any other sport,†he said.

Posted

At first I thought, why the hell didn't sheeds just head out to western sydney and find out himself.

Then I remembered, aside from not living in western sydney and probably being unable to find it, he's just spent the last 7 weeks in canberra where there's **** all else to do but visit the immigration department.

Seems legit.

First thought:

Wouldn't those sorts of numbers be found from the Australian Bureau of Statistics?

Love the way the spin is focused on Sheeds going to a government department in Canberra to try and find out about the demographic background of the Western Suburbs.

Here's a wacky way-out-of-left field idea...why not actually spend a few months on the stump in the Western Suburbs actually meeting the real people who live there instead of relying on some bureaucrats report. Sit inside the sports bar at the Pioneer Tavern in Penrith, mount a stall at Westpoint Blacktown, meet the arvo trains at Richmond on a weekday, set up a personally mounted display and members sign up at any one of the ovals where AFL is played between Homebush and Broken Hill...all the real world engagement activities that a club that started about 13 months ago in a rival code did with staggering success...the one that flourishes thanks to people smugglers and 457 visa entries...

NRL fans call the AFL gai;

NRL player gets famous for sticking his fingers in other players a$$ holes.

And 20 times a game everyone joins arms, bends over and sniffs each others a$$es.

Hmm.....

I try and avoid this gutter humour having copped it from both ends ( :xnod: - pun is there for all to see) when I lived in Melbourne (for following League and Rugby) and then in Brisbane/Sydney for watching AFL and barracking for the Bombers (but it was always ok for them to support the Bears/Lions or the Swans... just couldn't figure that out  :unknw: ). In Canberra it didn't really matter due to the transient nature of the population, with the locals loving any attention at all!

Just to delve into the gutter... my uncle in Melbourne calls players who play Rugby/League "butt sniffers". So there you go.

I couldn't care less.

Did anyone catch the Saints v Blues last night? (Damn Monday night fixtures)

WTF happened to Carlton? I thought Malthouse had them up and about the last few weeks.

Or did Ruwey just have "one of those nights?"

Lol I'm doing myself in as a Doggies fan saying this - but just remember - Rugby League has the scrum. An action where men can stick their heads up someone elses ass and call it sport.
