This. It was clearly due to the formation change and i'll die on this mountain. Changing from 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-2 was probably the biggest backwards step Rudan took. We constantly played with 2 CDM's as this is what the formation allows for. But yet we had two CAM's (Kittel and Ninkovic) in a formation that simply does not have a spot for a CAM. Kittel was always playing striker and Ninko on the wing. 4-4-2 is notoriously more defensive, i wonder if Rudan knew from the get go that he wasn't going to have a sufficient replacement for Mrcela so he opted for a defensive formation to cut his losses? Clearly this didn't work.
To me, in hindsight, our season took a turn when we 1. Lost Mrcela and 2. Changed formation.
