  • Wanderers One Man Down, One Goal Winners over Heart

    mack

A second half penalty won by Youssouf Hersi and converted by Shinji Ono gave the Wanderers all 3 points despite playing from the 13th minute without Jerome Polenz who was dismissed for cutting down David Williams in the box as he was about to shoot. Ante Covic stood tall and denied Josip Tadic from the spot to keep the game level.

The first ten minutes were played at a frenetic pace, end to end action that saw shots across the bow fired in by Mark Bridge for the Wanderers then Jason Hoffman and David Williams for Heart, Dino Kresinger was involved in the first talking point of the match. Having picked up the ball with his back to goal, he turned his marker Patrick Gerhardt and was slightly held by the central defender. The Croatian striker flung himself to the turf and was promptly awarded a yellow card for simulation. It wasn't received well by the 14,624 strong crowd and will hopefully be the final example of simulation for Western Sydney this season. David Vrankovic was very lucky to escape a harder punishment than a yellow card when Shinji Ono pounced on a wayward pass and was cut down by the Heart defender when it appeared he would be clean through on goal.

In the 12th minute a turn over from Mark Bridge in central midfield allowed Jonatan Germano to skip around Aaron Mooy. There was a gaping hole in the central defence caused by Nikolai Topor-Stanley & Michael Beauchamp both being drawn to Josip Tadic and Germano threaded a ball into the open space for Williams to run onto. Jerome Polenz hadn't tracked the wing-forward but Polenz did very well to make up the distance on the flying Williams. Unfortunately for the Wanderers that only allowed him to get close enough to make a poor challenge as Williams was attempting to shoot past Ante Covic. Referee Strebre Delovski had no hesitation in showing a straight red card for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity. As the foul had occurred in the box Josip Tadic stepped up to the spot to attempt to open the scoring. The side-footed shot was poor, neither central or toward the side netting and Covic palmed the shot to Topor-Stanley who headed it clear for a corner.

The penalty save energised the supporters and the players, Bridge having two good chances in the 18th and 20th minutes of the match. The first was cutting inside after receiving on the wing, and with the Heart defence standing off he scuffed his shot and Heart keeper Andrew Redmayne collect it at his feet. The second shot had Redmayne stretching to turn the ball away from goal, Kresinger used his strength to hold up the ball and draw the attention of four Heart defenders. As they closed in he laid the ball off to Bridge, the left footed first time shot was saved down low and Heart recovered the ball. Wanderers manager Tony Popovic elected to make a substitution in the 22nd minute to keep his players in their natural positions. Aaron Mooy was sacrificed for Iacopo La Rocca, who filled in at right back with Poljak returning to his defensive midfield position in combination with Ono playing further forward.

Pressure from Shinji Ono forced a turn-over in central midfield, ball falling to Hersi who played a lob over the top of the Heart defence. Kresinger, having manoeuvred around Vrankovic, was unlucky not to tip the ball past the diving Redmayne. The Red & Black domination continued, Kresinger nodding a corner from Ono that Germano had to head clear. Hersi stole the ball yet again from the ineffective Heart midfield, instead of his usual incisive runs he chose to strike on goal from a fair distance out, it moved and swerved in the air and for a moment threatened to arrow into the top left corner until Redmayne plucked it from the sky. Ono had his own chance from another Heart loss of possession, Bridge lofting it over the Heart defence, Ono knocked the ball down with his first touch but his second touch on the stretch couldn't get the ball past Redmayne.

With 30 minutes on the clock Heart finally regained some kind of coherent play, a free kick conceded by Hersi was hit across the park by Williams, Richard Garcia was left open and he headed it back across goal. A deflection from Kresinger kept the ball moving to the 6 yard box but Tadic couldn't make proper contact on his acrobatic side volley attempt, Covic clutching the ball gratefully. Nick Kalmar was given free space in front of the Wanderers back line and took the opportunity to strike at goal, Covic deciding to take the risk free option by knocking it down for Topor-Stanley rather than attempting to hold it. A Germano strike from a similar range was held by Covic as the 40th minute ticked over. A series of corners late on threatened to send the Wanderers into the break with the lead but several short corner variations weren't able to find the killer ball, 0-0 at half time.

Williams opened the second half with a decent effort on goal that Covic smothered low. Adam D'Apuzzo fired back 10 minutes into the half with his own tame effort. The best chance for the Heart since the penalty miss came from Williams again. As fireworks from the Parramatta Park Australia Day celebration began exploding over the stadium, Hersi nearly lit the fireworks on the pitch. Mark Bridge skipped through three Heart defenders and put the flying winger through on goal. Hersi hesitated with his shot for a couple steps more than he should have taken, and this allowed Redmayne the time to get down low and block the shot out for a corner.

Hersi continued his great work when Redmayne spilled a low cross out into the 6 yard box. Hersi with his back to goal and surrounded by defenders attempted to back heel the ball home. A poor clearance from that moment fell to Hersi who weaved toward the corner before turning back around, Vrankovic stuck the foot out and collected Hersi's leg that took him down. Delovski instantly pointed to the spot for the clear cut penalty. Shinji Ono stepped up in front of the Red & Black Bloc, Redmayne dived the wrong way, Ono slotted the goal away and the stadium exploded into noise louder than any of the firework displays across the country on it's national day. Hersi was substituted by Kwabena Appiah-Kubi to a standing ovation. Kubi had an immediately impact, creating several good chances with his blinding pace, drawing a yellow card from Jason Hoffman and a run into the box that he couldn't find a team-mate with the cut-back at the end of the run. Ono received his own standing ovation in the 83rd minute when he was replaced by Labinot Haliti, as a result of a heavy collision with Redmayne as both came out hard for a ball over the top. Haliti had his own good chance after he came on, when most expected him to head to the corner to run down the clock, he cut back onto his favoured right boot and hit a pile driver from a narrow angle that would have been a goal had Redmayne not turned the shot over the bar with his fingertips.

Even with the score being against them Melbourne Heart continued to be second best, Kresinger was allowed to turn and shoot from 25 yards but his shot was well off target. After several minutes of effective and legal time-wasting in the bottom left hand corner, Heart managed to scramble the ball upfield. With only 40 seconds to play Vrankovic lofted the ball high and long. Beauchamp slipped on the turf and it was the catalyst for the ball finding it's way to Williams. His strike was deflected by a sliding block from Topor-Stanley, the bounce in front of Covic meant he could only get a hand to the ball but not to control it, when it seemed certain that Tadic would tap in on the follow up, Covic leapt to his feet once more to smother the ball, Beauchamp cleared it into the stands and in the wash up Western Sydney were given a free kick for Babalj chopping under the Wanderers captain after the clearance. The clash of bodies left Covic clutching at his face seemingly caught by a stray boot, but when play resumed Covic kicked it long, Delovski blew the final whistle and the stadium roared in celebration of the heroic victory.

The Wanderers stoic performance sees them leap ahead of Adelaide United on goal difference, both teams currently on 32 points. It also signifies the end of the 2nd third of the season, and the start of the home stretch into the finals. With no injuries reported the only downside is the loss of Polenz for next weeks match, it is likely that Shannon Cole will step into the fullback position as he has done often this season.

The Wanderers next match is against Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide, on Sunday the 3rd of February at 5:00pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

I think that's why we received a free kick.

Should have been a card to the heart attacker, definitely.

Watched the game again (third time) yesterday and I think it's fair to say this was Dino's best game in the red and black since he signed on. And must say Heart were just as unimpressive on TV as they were live

Agreed. Just rewatched it (finally!) last night. Dino was best I've seen him.

Also, Hersi seemed to be getting pretty frustrated with people not passing to him. He was making a lot of space both on and off the ball, but the passes just weren't coming out as much as he'd like.

Missed you at the game POUMista...

And I guarantee if Polenz hadn't been red carded he would've given more service to Hersi. Having said that Hersi must've been given some instruction from Popa to come inside as much as he did, looking to play off to or from the midfield. And what does it say about how woeful the Heart were that on the flank where we had gone down a man they let Hersi (and then Appiah-Kubi) run riot...

    possession wsw=47% heart=53%

    that was actually wsw=53% heart=47%

i think foxsports stats said even higher, i need to check, but maybe that was time in opposition half

what's stranger is that normally we have less than 50% possession even in games we win

but i think our time in possession has been rising over the course of the season which is very encouraging, even our 6-1 win against adelaide was only 48%! 2nd derby was only 43%

    also 12 corners to 1 v heart

totally dominant performance with 10 men

stats at http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/aleague then click on each game

edit: FFA says possession wsw=53% heart=47%, foxsports says wsw=47% heart=53%, so dunno

    territory wsw=58% heart=42%

Nearly 350 passes from the Heart-less and yet they could only muster 9 shots in total (which is 2 less than our shots on goal)...FFS how is it that Aloisi still has a job and the smell of burning Heart memberships isn't wafting over the Murray River!

The more I think about it the more I think that Saturday's win was one of our top five performances so far this year (alongside the wins in Perth and against ESFC at their respective home grounds, and the Wanderland victories over Victory and Adelaide).

After Dino got his yellow for the dive a bunch of people in the Western Stand started the 'Dino' chant. I didn't see it live but on the replay you see him turn to the crowd and beat his chest. Good to see him so fired up.

The difference between us and other teams is that we counter a lot more effictively. When Shinji, Hersi or Bridge are dribbling there is always something on. Then there is the combination between Polenz and Hersi on the right. Dino now is also becoming a threat. I believe he is a close range goal scorer, and the reason he doesn't score more is because he is double and triple marked. Hence this gives the midfielders plenty of space to play in.

The other team can have the ball all they like. Our defence seems comfortable most times. It's what you do with the ball when you have it.

Nice work mate, well done, your blog has been bookmarked! I really like the idea of saving highlight moments in GIF form, not necessary the goal scoring, but the finesse moments that get lost in transit during the game. Props once again!
