  • Wanderers Round 19 Fixture Rescheduled

    mack

The Wanderers round 19 match against Melbourne Victory has been rescheduled due to atrocious FFA and Melbourne Victory planning.

The match, which was previously set down for AAMI Park on Saturday the 15th of February 2014, and was schedule to be a Wanderers Supporters Tour Of Duty match, has been changed to AAMI Park on Tuesday the 14th of January.

The fixture was changed because the FFA & Melbourne Victory released the schedule and draw without securing the use of AAMI Park for the original date, and were subsequently usurped by a concert.

A change to Ethiad Stadium on the original date is impossible due to preparations for concerts taking place there on the 18th & 19th of February. This change is going to cost Wanderers supporters as a collective thousands of dollars in wasted flights and accommodation.

This match on the 14th is being squeezed between a Sydney Derby at Parramatta on Saturday the 11th and playing in Adelaide on the 19th, giving the players only 2 days rest from the Derby before playing Melbourne Victory in Melbourne, flying back to Sydney, before leaving again for Adelaide to play another away match.

This is an absolutely shambolic piece of organisation from Melbourne Victory and the FFA. They have allowed a draw to be released with dates, knowing they do not actually have them secured. I find it incredible that a club playing at a stadium built specifically for Football that between the FFA and the Victory there is not a contract giving them priority over concerts, especially a concert at such late notice.

Damien de Bohun's attempt to spin their ridiculous scheduling is an insult to supporters. His claim that this will be a 'marquee fixture' is ludicrous, because it was already going to be a marquee fixture if the FFA and Victory had actually secured the use of their stadium. With the two best supporters groups in the league, and two top tier teams playing in arguably the best stadium in the country, this fixture could have been the best game of the year on and off the park and one of the best matches in all sport in Australia.

This change will only hurt the status of the fixture, trying to call a match played on a Tuesday in the 3rd week of January part of the 'holiday period' is wrong as most people will be back to work, and with the original match scheduled for a Saturday there was no need for the match to be in a so called 'holiday period' to begin with.

If Melbourne Victory cannot secure their stadium they should be punished by losing home ground advantage. This match should have been moved to Sydney and played on the original date at Parramatta Stadium.

    UPDATES:

Sources in Melbourne (note, not official) believe that this issue was a result of the FFA ignoring advice by MVFC that the date may result in both stadiums being unavailable.

The RBB is working to determine changes to our Tour Of Duty, so please do not adjust or cancel your bookings yet.

There is a letter to the FFA that I have penned about this issue, involving numerous questions to all parties concerned. It is located here (registration may be required).

    TUESDAY!?!

    FFS.

    Parra not free that weekend?

I doubt it. More likely the FFA didn't want to move the fixture from Melbourne.

The question remains.. what are the ffa going to do to compensate fans? They would surely know after last year that this impacts a HUGE amount of travelling supporters.

Since alot has pre-purchased flights and accommodations, if a whole lot of us complain together, I hope they can come up with a solution to compensate this.

Thankfully I hadn't bought my flights yet, but absolutely disgraceful that this has happened. I really feel sorry for those who have bought flights to this fixture.

I'm pretty sure it's happened before and the FFA won't do **** to compensate people.

Adelaide and Perth swapping home games (round 1 this season) - the FFA didn't do **** about it

Same. I was thinking about it, good thing I didn't go through with it.

I reckon choosing a Tuesday is to try and cull the active support/numbers of us traveling down. Chosing that day cause its considered a holiday period won't wash with me if they start using that as an excuse. It's no secret that active support is hated by the authorities down there and even Melbourne Victory aren't very supportive of their northern terrace. They know that this will probably be one of if not the most actively supported games all season and so to avoid any chance of trouble they've done this. Talk about biting your nose off to spite your face, they could have had one of the best atmospheres at this game and really benefitted from it.

    What a shame this is.

After last season's fixture, this is the away game ALOT of Wanderer's supporters have been looking forward to.

Don't they have an allphones arena type venue down in Melbourne? Surely that would be a better venue for a concert.

Yeah they have Rod Laver Arena. AAMI park is bigger though.

Melbourne didn't want to be shouted down at their home ground. Go on Victory, prove me wrong and move it to another ground on the original date.

i am posting this in both threads. Time to move and flood the FFA.

    Dear Mr Bohun

I am a Western Sydney Wanderer foundation member and of the Red and Black Bloc. I have just read that our game against the Melbourne Victory mid-February has been moved to mid-January. Have you and the FFA seriously considered the implications of this move. You have scheduled a game not only mid-week but also between the Sydney derby and our game that weekend in Adelaide. Our club is now forced to traverse between three states in a week and you consider this 'the best outcome'.

"While there is always some inconvenience in these amendments, we're delighted that the new date falls into the Christmas / New Year holiday period and will be become a marquee match in our Summer of Football campaign."

On what grounds do you base 'this delight'. Our players and supporters for that matter are not a performing circus doing party tricks on demand for the FFA. Have you considered the toll of travel, heat and sheer mental exhaustion you will be putting our squad through? Also - were you and the FFA aware that the RBB had nominated that match as one of the two Tour of Duty campaigns for the upcoming season. Did you know that many of us over a month ago begun purchasing airfares, organising accommodation and work for that weekend? Do you realise how many thousands of dollars we have now lost? Do you know that by moving the game to a weeknight it makes it impossible for the RBB to travel so on what grounds do you claim this will become a 'marquee match' in your "Summer of Football' given most of the RBB will not be there.  Did you know that most of us are booked to travel to Adelaide a few days later for the second Tour of Duty game. What are you without the fans Mr Bohun.

Mr Bohun. The A-League erupted last year and made international news because of the WSW and in particular the wildfire that is the RBB; Our presence has since blazed a trail through the west of Sydney and lit the passion of football followers throughout the country. Do not treat us with such contempt. It is us and not the heads of the FFA that drive this vehicle. Do not mock us or treat us lightly Mr Bohun. It is not the media or the advertisers or the 'entertainment dollar' that you are finally answerable to - it is us and we now through the RBB have found a weekend voice and we are not going away.

    I await your reply.
A voice from among the RBB.

That's a real shame. It spoils the good rivalry between both groups of fans. It's not good for the people who booked flights.

I fear that the change has more to do with the Heart punch incident, ie they think WSW fans attract trouble.

If Adelaide and Perth switched their home and away dates, why couldn't WSW and Victory

Okay, apparently you can change your flights on Jetstar for $40.

NO ONE CHANGE YOUR FLIGHTS YET, THERE IS AN ANNOUNCEMENT TO BE MADE TONIGHT OR OVER THE COMING DAY ABOUT AMENDMENTS TO THE 'TOUR OF DUTY'.

Mack, please help me emphasise that ^^^^

The annoying thing is that they've had plenty of occasions where the draw has TBC on it for various reasons. That stands for "to be confirmed" so it implies that anything that doesn't have TBC next to it has been confirmed. Had they put TBC next to that fixture until they'd sorted out the availability of the venue then it wouldn't have been picked for a Tour of Duty.

    • I knew I was missing one. Zdrilla should be super high on the list.
    • Thats a slightly pessimistic view of what he's achieved. His wiki is outright wrong. His first stint at Oxford as a player but mostly coach lasted nearly 10 years. Then 4 years at Wellington. Then 2 years running youth NT. Then a short stop at MC then 2 years in India. The reason why I want at this particular moment is the same reason he gets dragged around. He's absolutely outstanding with youth players. He gets moved to do a job, though I will admit the india move was a weird one, despite winning silverware and a decent run in asia. His MCFC stint was always interim He's regarded as top teir when it comes to young players. When you look at the crop we have right now, the right coach could build a dynasty. Instead we are looking at another season with a bloke who constantly uses players and other coaches as human shields. The youngsters need to study the bus time table this off season to avoid getting thwon under it.
    • Here's a few names: - Andrew Christensen: Despite the fact he doesn't have a choice on the NPL squad each week due to some players getting the call up to the A-League squad. What Christensen has done so far this season has been magnificent with the NPL squad. He would use the likes of Sapsford, Blair, Younis, Hammond, Priestman, Bonetig and Barrie into the squad and looked how some of those performed last week? They have more passion to represent the club than some of the actual seniors within the squad. He would probably promote youth players like Hollingdale, Cameron and Bugarija as well who honestly deserve a scholarship into the senior squad for next season anyway.  - Adam Griffiths: Currently the assistant coach at Wellington. He was at the Wanderers last season but left. Prior to that, he was managing NPL club Manly United and did a great job there. They got runners up in competition one year under Griffiths - Franco Parisi: He's only been managing APIA Leichhardt for two seasons but he won the premiership with them last season. - Arthur Papas: Did alright at the Jets even though they were a below average team at the time. He is liked by fans within the A-League and it would nice to see him back. He would probably grab Eli Babalj as an assistant coach as well.  - Tony Popovic: I would not be surprised Lederer has been talking to him to come back. Personally, I wouldn't want him back. What he did for the first and second at the club was great. Then, it spiralled.  - Scott McDonald: Currently managing Gold Coast Kinghts who has been killing it in the NPL QLD competition Long shots: - Mirko Jelicic: He's an Australian that's been managing in Uzbekistan. He managed a Uzbekistan club to win a treble one season and he currently is the assistant manager for the Uzbekistan national team. - David Zdrilic: Rudan praised him for his work at Sydney FC.  - Des Buckingham: As @Upthehill mentioned, every club he has been at he's done really well with them. - Jon Brady: Helped Northampton Town get promoted into League One last season
