  • Wanderers Pre-Season Schedule Announced

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have announced 6 pre-season friendly matches.

With the Western Sydney Wanderers entering their pre-season preparation, the club have confirmed a half-dozen pre-season friendly matches.

    • Macarthur Rams - Wednesday August 7 - 7:30pm Kickoff - Campbelltown Stadium
    • Canberra Olympic - Wednesday August 14 - 6:15pm Kickoff - AIS Athletics Field, Canberra.
    • Wellington Phoenix - Wednesday August 21 - 6:15pm Kickoff - Lily Homes Stadium, Seven Hills.
    • Adelaide United - Sunday September 22 - 2:00pm Kickoff - Centrebet Stadium, Penrith.
    • Melbourne Victory - Sunday September 29 - 2:00pm Kickoff - Kingston Twin Ovals, Tasmania.
    • Bankstown City Lions - Thursday October 3 - 7:15pm Kickoff - Jensen Park, Sefton.

    Opinion:

There are some stand-out issues I can see with this schedule. The first is that there is a month long gap between the Wellington & Adelaide matches. It seems extremely odd that a club will start by playing three pre-season matches, then simply stop for a month.

The second is that the Western Sydney Wanderers have snubbed the three major New South Wales Premier League teams that exist in South-Western Sydney. Marconi, Bonnyrigg & Sydney United all exist in an area that has major support for the Wanderers. Club Marconi has the largest section of local support when the Wanderers play away matches for example. If Sydney FC can arrange to play Marconi, how is it that the Western Sydney Wanderers cannot?

My final consideration is the quality of the clubs being faced is not particularly high. While the quality of Melbourne Victory is clear, both Wellington & Adelaide are undergoing rebuilding phases under new management, and the three other teams are all outside the NSW Premier League. Sydney FC had their season start incredibly poorly due to a badly mismanaged pre-season campaign, and they have chosen to undertake 15 pre-season matches this year. I hope that the Wanderers are not repeating the mistakes other clubs have made in the past.

I hope that the month long gap is being prepared for a tour of some kind, or for friendlies yet to be announced. Pre-season is vitally important in getting the A-League season proper off to a good start, and getting it wrong could derail our campaign to retain the Premiership before it even begins.

I read/heard somewhere maybe even on this forum, that friendlies against Bonnyrigg and Marconi were almost confirmed. Hopefully they'll slot into the gap.

Definitely thinking of going to the Campbelltown, Seven Hills and Penrith Games.

To get to the Seven Hills game, turn off Prospect Highway at Seven Hills Public School onto Lucas Road, then turn right at the Lights into Quinn Avenue.

Of what I remember, there is parking in the restaurant place Lily's which is basically next door

i remember last year a truck got stuck in them side streets starting going up and realised with all the cars on the sides that he wasn't able to get through.

I like the oval its a nice ground, decent accoustics the RBB will be heard for miles!!

Aren't the empty months filled by the Indonesian Preseason Tournament?

We aren't playing. That is going to be CCM and I believe Adelaide.

If I still lived in Kings Langley I would walk, but now I live a bit further away I would just park at the station... visit St. Pats... then walk to the ground :)

Anyone have any ideas when they will announce ticketing options for the games other than campbeltown?

Canberra should be free, the Adelaide at Penrith game will be through proticket like Campbelltown (sigh, more ripoff fees), the Tassie game will be either free or general admission pay cash at the gate (I have no idea), and the Jensen Park & Lily Homes games will likely also be cash at the gate deals.

Be interesting to see how many people we get to the games this time around. Especially in the RBB.

I'm sure the local games will be big crowds. The test will be Canberra when people need to leave work earlier to make the game. It will be the true test

Blacktown CIty game is $10 for adults and $6 for children. Tickets available next week through proticket

So should we add at least another $7-8 transaction fee?  :xmad:

Surely it is illegal to have transaction fees cost up to 80% of the ticket price?

When I bought tix to the jets game it was $4-5 max added on for the whole amount of tickets you bought

Tickets for the Tassie game go on sale August 7 I think and there will be a limited number. IIRC it is $15 for adults.  Can't recall kids prices.   All for the privilege of sitting/standing on a hill and lining up at Portaloos.

I'll be buying all my tickets the traditional way, at the gate, to avoid the stupid fee.

    Bring on the friendlies!

Anyone know the capacity at Lily Homes stadium?

Hoping it won't sell out. Not giving Pro ticket a single cent. Greedy #&%$ing bastards.

    Gabbie Stadium?

    what the

That's the original name of the stadium, again, according to Wiki: "The venue has been originally known as Gabbie Stadium until recent naming rights deals with Fairfax Community Newspapers settled on the name of Fairfax Community Stadium from 2007-2009 when it was renamed Lily Homes Stadium."

There are countless stadiums that have naming rights sponsors, often it is one of the ways they can keep the ground open.
