is anyone else excited at the fact we have signed a 25 yo German defender / midfielder who has played at Werder Bremen ?

i can see him sitting in front of the back 4, tackling the f*ck out of anything that moves, feeding the ball to Mooy sitting in next to him who then distributes it all over the park.

The credentials are good, and a holding midfielder is exactly what we need. Hopefully he gets a run tomorrow.

    - Jerome Polenz is German and has played for Werder Bremen, Alemannia Aachen and Union Berlin and also Internationally at U19 and U20 level.

    - He's 25 years old and plays Defender (CB, RB)/Defensive Midfield and can also play striker.

    - He was in Germany's UEFA European U/19's squad in 2005 playing along side Manuel Neuer and Kevin-Prince Boateng.

Nice to see another young import which appears to be the norm this season across all the teams. It means their recruiting is better and also that the HAL is a seen as a real prospect for some of these players that must be struggling to make a name for themselves where they currently are.

hopefully he can drop some bombs from 30 out, one reason why i like the bundesliga, teams fancing themselves from 30+ out :)

Looks like the makings of a good midfield creator/destroyer pairing with Mooy.

It sounds like he can play every single position on the football field..

Weak foot is excellent, can play defence, midfield and was listed as a forward in the 2005 Euro U19 Championships.

This is exactly the type of signings i love to see! Great age, something to prove, from quality footbaling background.

He looks like the exact player we need to complete our midfield playing in the deep holding role, and can cover anywhere in defense.

    Im excited!

I am a bit concerned with this signing.

Have you seen his photo. He could well be another Croat !!!!!!!!!! :meep:

What will we call him ......"Polenzic????"

On a serious note, his history suggests that he has under-acheived so far and that he might have a point to prove. I wonder why he never made the transition from top junior to at least a regular Bundesliga player.

Nobody in the Bundesliga likes to keep a kid with a dodgy knee. See here for more.

Interestingly it also seems like he is predominantly a right-sided player.

    Interesting stats there Kopite.

I just did a comparison with Broich to get an idea of what we getting http://www.transfermarkt.com/en/basics/spielervergleich/basics_1762_10209.html

Broich had played a lot more 1. Bundesliga games but his value was definitely on the way down when he went to Brisbane. I guess time will tell, but there are positives and we can't in reality expect a player on the way up in Germany to look to Australia to improve his pay packet or development.

He's of algerian descent! Algeria is taking over the a-league! DEY TOK OWR TEM!!

Looks destined to the right sided holding role at the back of the midfield.

I think also that players whom come to the a-league at this age having played in leagues such as bundesliga, get renewed confidence and self belief.

I mean they come with a fresh clean platter, something to prove, and almost a naive belief that being a foreigner from such higher leagues they need to lead from the front, in a positive way. This really brings some confidence in there own abilities.

Offcourse Broich is a prime example. He runs around the pitch with such confidence and leads the team. In the bundesliga he would have been much more withdrawn.

Wow, i know its just a highlights package. But after watching that the guy can player all of RB+LB and across all of midfield. Offcourse though id be assuming he would have to be in midfield, and still he looks like he could either be a holding midfielder or a number 10. He's got the defensive side down packed and some great touch, skill and a decent shot.

Hope he plays tomorrow night. Cant wait to judge where he's really at for myself!

I must say I am a bit wary of watching videos of "best scenes" given that such an edit does not give you a complete picture. Like anything, consistency will be the key. I'm agree with you DD, I reckon he will have something to prove.

He hasn't scored any goals for at least 5 years so I'm certain he'll end up in a defensive minded role.

Which shall allow Mooy to move into an attacking midfield / distribution role.
