  • Golec Guns Down Guangzhou

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers will take a 1-0 aggregate lead into the second leg of their Asian Champions League quarter final after a remarkable match against ACL Champions Guangzhou Evergrande were beaten by a goal to Antony Golec, followed by finishing the match with just 9 men on the park.

Golec claimed the winner on the hour mark, cutting inside from the left flank before delivering a low cross that beat everyone including the Chinese goalkeeper, who was frozen by the run of Tomi Juric, before nestling into the bottom right hand corner.

Evergrande saw two red cards and their World Cup winning manager Marcello Lippi may face further sanctions as chaos reigned following the dismissals of Zeng Linpeng in the 88th minute and Gao Lin in the 90th.

Shannon Cole has the best chance of the first half, after Haliti stormed down the wing he put a wonderful cross that beat the leaping Evergrande defence, only to see Cole glance the header wide when he should have put his side in front. Liao Lisheng smacked a ball moments before the break that Covic turned away.

The second half was all Wanderers from the opening stages, Tomi Juric menacing the diminutive Chinese defenders and being the cause of the goal from Golec despite not getting a touch. Vitor Saba made his Parramatta Stadium debut and made an immediate impact, gliding around his opponents and drawing numerous fouls, while also showing an appetite for the hard defensive that he will require playing in the A-League for Western Sydney.

Chaos reigned in the last moments of the game, as Linpeng smashed La Rocca with an elbow and was shown a straight red, followed minutes later by compatriot Lin who kicked Vitor Saba in the face and quickly joined Linpeng for an early shower. At that point Lippi stormed onto the pitch and confronted the referee, who eventually regained control, denied Juric a penalty in the final seconds then ended the match.

The result means any draw or win for the Wanderers will see them through to the Semi-Final, while even a 2-1 loss would be enough to progress on away goals.

The Wanderers next match is Leg 2 of the Asian Champions League quarter finals against Guangzhou Evergrande, in China, played on Wednesday the 27th of August.

It's safe to say they join Melbourne victory and Sydney fc as our rivals you would think right?

I would say Sydney FC as our main rivals with victory second, their fans just hate us since our club has been a massive success for the league, can't stand us hard working and very passionate Westies who truly know how to support our club. Now Guanzhou will be our main rivals in the ACL as well by the way they are carrying on.

We're in with a chance of knocking out the champions, but its going to be tough conditions and a hostile crowd. I've gotten used to the wanderers pulling rabbits out of hats, but getting the series win against the best team in asia at their home would be pretty special.

The number of raging chinese keyboard warriors going to google translate to come up with hard hitting gems like "your mother dead" or "I intercoursed your mother until she satisficed delicious" if that were to happen would make for endless entertainment.

Their fans and even the team seem mentally brittle. Haters gonna hate - but as the great bearded one himself said, "It's a shame that we're in this position now.... but there's no problem - I'm a cool guy and I don't take it seriously"

Guanzhou by a country mile heyitsrobbie, when a team and it's players cop this abuse from a team that can't stand losing and by how we can shut their skill sets with great defensive pressure they go off.

well they may be a our greatest rival we'll ever have. It may only be in the ACL but the hatred between the 2 sides dwarfs both sydney fc and melbourne. i really wish we could fill ANZ stadium with WSW fanatics and let them know where they are

I hope we draw Guangzhou in next year's ACL.

Our paths will cross again in future ACL competitions and it will have added spice / meaning that is for sure.

I am kind of coming down from this weeks game now. All this excitement will seem a little hollow to me if we cannot finish off the job next week. Also I now have a similar feeling going in to an ESFC game, I really don't want to get beaten by this Evergrande scum, horrible club and fans.

Already feeling a bit tense about the game......... ***** what I wouldn't give for an away goal in the first 10 min!

So the Chinese think a dog looks like a horse that's been hit by a bus and has dicks for feet? And what's on the S? Is it supposed to be hair supported by some random bone or has horsedog somehow shat on its own back?

I just translated one of the longer comments...

"NLogicMS: saba should be sent off, it was a joke. I am crazy fans, but FIFA should stop this they have been blatant diving, fraud end should be suspended for him.

PeteinCronulla: rangers showed in the game, as usual, dirty, including la roca in the top of the head of the match each other's players, but the referee did not say, it's a dirty team.

DMurphy: Austria team is twice oscar levels of performance, nausea, don't deserve play in austria.

Billybooth: that' funny, if I support the diving, is a disgrace.

Jon: the two diving is italy and brazil, their ugly game, too many fouls.

RealityCheck: can't wait to see homeless people being beaten in 5-0.

Askgrub1: football fun and beautiful not performance."

Hahahaha looks like the guy just made up his own interview

I wonder if lippi is under any pressure even before this game there were a couple of articles saying they had learnt from mistakes and were at their peak and that they would not slip up like against mvfc.

This. We have our first true Asian rivalry. I really want to hold on, but I'm quite nervous about it. An early away goal and we will be good. The longer the match goes though, the more nerve racking it will get.

Actually at least Sydney FC fans have not gone to the extreme lengths that Guanzhou fans have, that I will compliment them, more like a half good and half bad rivalry with Sydney FC, but us and Evergrande are we want to beat them to see them suffer big time for the bad things they have said to us fans, the players and teasing the whole western sydney community.

If they are serious about their team and want to show they can compete in supporting their team at home, they will have to. The pressure they would face if they don't would be huge, after all they have said they apparently have a big support base from some things I have seen. Just hope the guys get a win or a hard fought draw over there.

a big support base is one think but lets hope they not as seemingly un-hinjed as the mob that got on on instagram

that said they are most likely just kids and keyboard warriors
