  • Wanderers Draw Guizhou Renhe, Ulsan & TBD of Japan

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have been drawn in Group H alongside Guizhou Renhe of China, Ulsan Hyundai of South Korea & a team from the Japanese J-League that is yet to be determined. The Wanderers will kick off their inaugural AFC Champions League campaign against Ulsan Hyundai on Wednesday the 26th of February at Parramatta Stadium.

The draw took place in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon. Preceding the draw was a new initiative called "60 Minutes" designed to reduce time wasting during AFC Champions League matches. Statistics showed that because of time wasting most matches only included 53 minutes of game time, in comparison to many other leagues and FIFA competitions where 60 minutes is the norm. 60 minutes is the new target, and the AFC believe this will improve the spectacle of the football on offer.

Guizhou Renhe qualified as the 2013 Chinese FA Cup winners. Guizhou finished 4th in the 2013 Chinese Super League. The club has an Australian connection through Jonas Salley, who played for the New Zealand Knights, Sydney FC, Adelaide United & Gold Coast United.

Ulsan Hyundai of South Korea qualified as the Runner Up of the 2013 K-League. Ulsan won the 2012 edition of the AFC Champions League, defeating Al-Ahli 3-0.

The Japanese team in the group is yet to be confirmed. While Yokohama F. Marinos finished 2nd in the 2013 J.League, the position may be impacted by the Emperor's Cup. If Sanfrecce Hiroshima win the Emperor's Cup then the beaten Emperor's Cup finalist will take the Group H position. If Yokohama or Kawasaki win the Emperor's Cup then Cerezo Osaka will take the Group H position. If one of the other teams wins the Emperor's Cup then Yokohama will take the position.

If Melbourne Victory progress to the Group Stage their opponents will be defending AFC Champions League winners Guangzhou Evergrande of China, Jeonbuk Motors of Korea & the Japanese Emperor's Cup winner. The Central Coast Mariners are up against Sanfrecce Hiroshima, FC Seoul & the winner of the other qualification play-off.

Every Asian Champions League group stage is tough and the Wanderers have received a draw that reflects this. While none of the other teams in group are the Premiers of their respective leagues, both Ulsan & Yokohama (if they qualify) finished 1 point from the top of their leagues and will provide an imposing challenge.

Wanderers vs Ulsan - 26th February

Guizhou Renhe vs Wanderers - 12th March

Wanderers vs TBD Japan - 19th March

Japan TBD vs Wanderers - 1st April

Ulsan's choke is hilarious and ridiculously heartbreaking all at the same time. Coming into the final game of the season against 2nd placed Pohang they were 2pts ahead and only needed a draw to win the title. Mind you there were at home where they'd only lost once all season, and going into 4 minutes of injury time with the score at 0-0 it looked like Ulsan would do it. That was until Pohang got a free kick after 94mins and 50secs and after a mad scramble scored with the last kick of the season to win the title.

Mack can you explain the 60 minute implementation? I have NFI what they're on about

Next tume you watch a game use a stop watch and time how much time the ball is in play.

Apparently the average time the ball is in play is less than 60 minutes, they want to get to an average of 60 mins for the ACL. However, I believe the FIFA standard is mid-to high 60's. It's all to try and stop time wasting. What would be easier would be fine or ban the repeat offending clubs and players.

Would be interesting to compare East & West Asian teams with those figures too...

maybe they can use the heart from last week, particularly the 2nd half, as an example the ball not being in play for long

Lol don't book anything, the draw could change.

    Mack,

Any idea when it'll be finalized?

Whenever the Emperor's Cup finishes. The quarters are being played in a couple of weeks.

if we play Yokohama or Kawasaki they are both very close to central Tokyo, and so the latter will be best base

rail travel from central areas of Tokyo to either stadium will be quite easy

to JR Kawasaki station is only 15 minutes on the Tokaido Main Line

to Yokohama is about 30-35 minutes or less via numerous JR and Subway lines

And Osaka is 500k's away, almost as far as Sydney to Melbourne.

I was thinking more along the lines of people saying "We're going to be in Tokyo so book now anyway."

so i have never really watched many acl games. were are we expected to finish or what are peoples predictions how good is the quality of the asia's top teams. how far has an Australian team actually got

    Link to comment

I don't see a reason why we couldn't top the group. It'll be tough, if they don't play well we could finish last.

Adelaide made the final I think 5 years ago (maybe longer?) and got beaten heavily in a two-legged playoff.

The Mariners always say they lose money from the ACL so it's not lucrative. We might do better if our supporters turn up to matches mid-week and we can get a big sponsor.

    Link to comment

oh so what can we actually get out of it then as a club? i would assume more publicity through out asia, possibility of new sponsors?
