  • Milanovic Masterclass Conquers City

    mack

Melbourne City hosted the Wanderers on a Saturday night clash in Melbourne to close out November, Nicolas Milanovic opened the scoring with a penalty he earned and scored & Marcus Antonsson closing the game as a contest with his late goal to complete a comfortable 2-0 win.

Wanderers manager Alen Stajcic once again elected to leave marquee signing Juan Mata on the bench, a move that will continue to put pressure on his tenure at the club if the losses keep mounting up. The defensive unit required a reshuffle due to an injury to foreign loan signing Jeong Tae-Wook, leaving Stajcic to use the very young central defensive duo of Alex Bonetig and Anthony Pantazopoulos. Melbourne City returned Aziz Behich to the starting 11, their injury woes seeing 17 year old Medin Memti leading their attacking line.

The game kicked off in torrential rain, the teams soaked to the bone. City fashioned an attack in the 2nd minute where Yonatan Cohen and Steven Ugarkovic collided at the cruical moment but managed to knock the ball into a defender for a corner. That corner almost ended in the first goal of the game, an in-swinging corner that was flicked on toward the back post, turned back inside where a shot along the ground was kept out by Thomas, and the rebound going pinball with Thomas again blocking the path to allow his defence to clear it away, just as the rain began to clear also.

Milanovic had a pop from halfway trying to catch Patrick Beach off his line, the shot was too high and wide. The remainder of the opening half-hour had neither team making a clear cut chance or dominating possession for any stretches of time. Milanovic had a shot in the 34th minute where he cut back on Behich, fired through the defenders legs and almost caught Beach short at the near post, hitting it and it going out for a goal kick.

Nathaniel Atkinson & Brandon Borrello both had similar glorious chances one after the other. For City the Austrian attacker Andreas Kuen dribbled to the byline and delivered a cut back, with Lawrence Thomas covering the near post Atkinson had an acre of open net to aim for but blasted his shot over the bar. Borrello was found with a low through ball cross but he was possibly offside and similarly kicked it into the stands as well.

3 minutes before half-time the Wanderers were sent to the spot when Milanovic dribbled past Behich, knocked the ball into Callum Talbot before being smashed to the turf by the defender. It was a clear penalty, and after winning the penalty he scored it, sending the keeper the wrong way with a stutter step and placing it into the net to take the lead in the game and for Milanovic, in the Golden Boot race with his 5th of the A-League season. The final act of the half was Thomas palming the ball away from an attempt to score directly from a corner. Milanovic's penalty the key moment of a half that was otherwise quite dire.

The game ambled to the hour mark, City introducing Harry Politidis off the bench with the penalty causing Talbot withdrawn. The Wanderers made their own sub not longer after, Antonsson coming on for Sapsford. There was a brief break as Thomas recieved treatment after being hit in the shoulder by an onrushing City attacker. Jimmy Jeggo came on as well as a sub for Zane Schrieber. With City starting to hold the ball for longer and longer periods as the Wanderers camping on their penalty area, Stajcic summoned a double sub to retake the momentum of the game. Aydan Hammond on for Borrello, and Mata on for Bozhidar Kraev. The starting striker duo had worked hard but had lacked a killer ball or finding enough space up front. To start the final 10, newly introduced Kavian Rahmani made his first impact on the game with a poor tackle on Dylan Scicluna that was punished with a yellow card.

Momentum shifted again in the 81st minute, Gabriel Cleur doing some excellent work in the midfield to close down and steal the ball away from Behich and he ran at the defence, turning them backward and scrambling. Unable to stop the fullback he produced a wonderful through ball to Antonsson who made a great run to open up his left foot and turned it past the onrushing goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

The final subs of the game came as stoppage time began, Scicluna and Pantazopoulos off for Oscar Preistman & Dean Pelekanos. City had a shot bounce up over the bar for a corner, and claims for a penalty waved away when Souprayen went down under at most an extremely light contact from Cleur. Thomas continued his good game by denying Kai Trewin's snapshot on the turn, the second corner coming off Jeggo and well over. The 4 minutes of stoppage time expired and full time sounded to give the Wanderers their first away win against Melbourne City at AAMI Park since 2015.

Three points and their 2nd win of the season, the 7 points not enough to enter the top 6 but at least providing them with some space from the bottom of the ladder as the team go into their first Bye round.

The Wanderers next game is against Brisbane Roar, at Parramatta on Saturday the 14th of December with kick-off at 7:35pm. The Wanderers have the bye on the weekend of the 6th to 8th of December.

So they were missing players. We won, can only beat what's in front of us.

That said we should be looking for a CB and LB in Jan

There's a few names available now and in January

Joshua Laws - Got released from Swiss club Grasshoppers in October. Can play centre back and left back
Brad Smith - departing Houston in December. He is 100 times better as Jack Clisby. Would definitely sign him and have him as a first choice left back
Tomislav Mrcela - Currently a free agent.
James Holland - despite mostly playing as a defensive midfielder, he can play as a centre back, currently a free agent
Harrison Delbridge - Contract with Icheon United ends in December
Tass Mourdoukoutas - Contracts ends with Canadian club Valour FC in December

Dellbridge, Laws and Smith would be an instant yes. If we signed those 3 I'd even be fine with the kids in midfield.

    Mrcela wont come back

James Holland is older than most fine wines, he isnt the future. We dont really want another 6 month stop gap, do we?

Tass Started every game in the CPLs wooden spooners. The CPL is a mile off the Aleague

Ooof, geez. OK. I remember he had a shocker in his debut but I didn't notice his career overall in Canada has been a complete shocker.

He should come home and play for Sydney Olympic.

Yeah I like his style as a player. He should never have been encouraged to convert to a CB, he just doesnt read the game well enough for it

Looked like 2 groups of players that are still working out how they should be playing, hence there was little strategic impetuous for each side to bounce off - leads to a boring stalemate.

Sergio Ramos is a free agent.

Staj could play him on the bench next to Mata.

Panta has shown why he was voted the best NPLVIC player before we signed him. And Bonnetig seemed more comfortable and settled with Panta than Jeong.

I think it's because Panta and Bonetig would of played together for a bit in the NPL squad. These two plus Barrie and Grdic were very good as centre backs for the NPL squad until the demise in the squad mid-season where they had to rely on Roman Culina and Ricky Fransen who were awful.

Are we to assume now that Beadling is totally out of favour?

Apparently, he has visa issues. I say if it isn't sorted by the end of the month, he'll head back to England.

wow, so what happened there. He wasn't a regular starter player, but handy enough squad player who could cover a couple of positions.

From what I understand when he rocked up he got extremely ill very quickly. Took him quite a while to get back to fighting fit. By then the depth chart had been reorganised a fair bit. He never really cracked it back into the squad from the performances we all saw. Staj basically just didnt see enough from him to warrant him being a long term option.

I whole heartedly disagree with letting him go. Are we really of the opinion that Pelekanos is the better midfielder for depth? We just played a game on the weekend with literally no defensive cover. None. Zero. We barely had 4 defenders unless you want to claim Clisby is actually a defend :D

I dont think beadling was a long term option for us but letting go a very physical senior player didnt seem like the smart play unless he was utterly refusing to play or indeed had visa issues

Beadling was almost never around. He was either injured or suspended last year. The year before we went through almost half the season before he was finally fit to play. Its not really a loss if he barely played due to fitness/suspension issues.

I had to laugh at Hill and McBreen's frustration with how inept we are at playing out from the back. They should think themselves iucky, as fans we have to sit through it every week. No surprise that Clisby was singled out by McBreen for dwelling so long that all his forward options disappear. They were not much kinder in their criticism of our centre backs. On a positive note, Scicluna is improving every week and is becoming a key player for us.

It's driven me totally mad. To be fair to Panta at centre back he's not afraid to hit a long ball straight for borello to run on to.

The player who you would want on the ball more than any other sits on the bench until it's too late to have an impact. Still like to see Mata start in deep lying role.

Every presenter involved on the broadcast had a crack at how **** the game was haha even Tara wasn’t impressed. It was hilarious, they didn’t try and hide their disdain whatsoever

    Good things

    1) We won

    2) We didn't concede

    3) Sciluna is ace

    4) Panta looked good as a CB

    5) Milanovic makes stuff happen

5.5) Clisby played a beautiful ball to Borello

    Meh things

    1) It's a minor miracle we didn't concede in the first 2 mins which would have been a very very different game

    2) Cleur giving stupid free kicks away, ok they aren't dangerous as they are high up the field, but their player is going nowhere we have an opportunity to press and win the ball in a good spot or at the lest get a throw, and grabs the player, so they get a free kick and all the pressure is gone

    3) Clisby getting the ball in space, taking 2 or 3 touches before neatly playing the ball back slows everything down

    4) We still are no closer to working out how / if Matta fits into the team, again brought on way too late

    5) With the amount of players they had out, still hard to tell if we are really a top 6 team

Lord above this gives me the sh/its. I counted 5 in total he let Behich off by yanking his shirt. And on one occasion he was literally blowing past Behich and likely to nick the ball off him inside the box all alone. Genuine chance to steal a goal. If I were a striker theres no way Id waste energy pressing the CB if I saw Cleur hunting down the opposing LB. You just know he's going to get handsy and Ill waste my legs

The only time you'll ever get away with it is in park football when someones random irish mate refs the game. The type of guy who waves play on to a two footer in the knees
