More and more outlets reporting that LVG is gone but no official confirmation. Also a QC named Paul Gilroy was spotted arriving at the club. He's a lawyer for the League Managers Association and managed Moyes sacking.

Apparently if it happens today we'll know when the New York stock exchange opens as that's where they have to disclose it first.

Gone.

Statement from the club:

Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward said: "I would like to thank Louis and his staff for their excellent work in the past two years culminating in winning a record-equalling 12th FA Cup for the club (and securing him a title in four different countries). He has behaved with great professionalism and dignity throughout his time here. He leaves us with a legacy of having given several young players the confidence to show their ability on the highest stage. Everyone at the club wishes him all the best in the future."

A decision on a successor as manager will be announced soon.

Statement from van Gaal:

It has been an honour to manage such a magnificent club as Manchester United FC, and in doing so, I have fulfilled a long-held ambition.

I am immensely proud to have helped United win the FA Cup for the 12th time in the club's history. I have been privileged during my management career to have won 20 trophies but winning the FA Cup, which is steeped in so much history, will always be one of the most special achievements of my career.

I am very disappointed to be unable to complete our intended three-year plan. I believe that the foundations are firmly in place to enable the club to move forward and achieve even greater success.

I hope that winning the FA Cup will give the club a platform to build upon next season to restore the success that this passionate set of fans desire.

Having managed in Holland, Spain and Germany, I had always hoped for the opportunity to manage in English football and be part of English culture. Both of these experiences have lived up to expectations and been fantastic.

I thank my players and wish them well for next season. It has been a pleasure to work with them and it has been particularly rewarding to see so many young players take their chance to break into the first team and excel. I look forward to watching the continued development of these young players next season.

Thank you to the owners and board of Manchester United for giving me the opportunity to manage this great club.

I would also like to express my gratitude to the amazing United supporters. They are truly the best fans in the world.

I am indebted to my support and coaching staff, who have given me their all during their time at the club.

I am deeply grateful to each and every member of the club’s staff - the sports science team, the medical team, the kit and laundry department, club administration, the press office, the manager's team, the Academy team, ground staff and the catering team, both at Old Trafford stadium and Carrington training ground, all of whom have given me their unwavering support in my time at United. Never in my 25 years as a manager have I been so well supported in my role.

Finally, my special thanks go to Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton for always making me and my family feel so welcome throughout my time as Manchester United manager.

The bus operator is about to descend on Manchester. How do the United and Chelsea fans feel about that? I recall when Bayern signed coach Otto Rehagel from Bremen, plus their play maker (Austrian Andreas Herzog). I felt like puking for days.

The club has now clearly indicated what they are about. Forget about dignity & stability. Let's bring in someone who can get us short term success, but whose philosophy & behaviour goes against everything the club supposedly represents.

I think we have to wait and judge Jose on his actions when he actually becomes our manager. This has been his dream job for a very long time and he's always talked very highly of Manchester United.

Just how LVG was hired based on his attacking style and intent with previous sides but turned into the most defensive, ancient and boring manager while in charge of us.

BBC: a Mou for Man U. With Pep in town as well things should get pretty interesting in Manchester.

I've seen it reported as fact so many times, I'll only believe it when it is officially announced. So it is done? Is he finally coming? No more false reports?

LvG was a revelation in his first year at Bayern, and a debacle in his second year.

Mou will be good two years, he'll sign a four year contract extension, and then history might repeat itself. Looking forward to the next editions of Mou vs Pep already.

Sky Sports has an article about his apparent dour style.

Firstly, the matter of Mourinho's style has always seemed a curious criticism. His first Chelsea side were a swaggering force following his 2004 arrival, with the wing threats of Arjen Robben, Damien Duff and Joe Cole providing plenty of entertainment to go with the power.

In the space of nine Premier League games in that first season, Chelsea put four past six different sides as they finished with 72 goals - 14 more than Manchester United that season. They repeated that feat in retaining the title the following year.

Nobody scored more goals than Porto over his two full seasons in charge, and Mourinho's Inter were the top scorers in Serie A in each of his two years in Italy. But it's the efforts of his Real Madrid team that should really have banished such talk.

Mourinho's Real not only scored more than 100 league goals in each of his three seasons at the Bernabeu, but they even succeeded in outscoring the great Barcelona team over that period too. The 121 goals scored in the 2011/12 title-winning season is a La Liga record.

I do remember his 2nd season with Madrid. They were something else. From memory, they also ended up with 100 points on the table.

However, I believe that was also the year he snuck up behind Vilanova and eye gouged him. That's why I don't want him at the club. It's not his playing philosophy, it's everything else.

Also FWIW, Barcelona was his original dream job. He worked under Robson and then LVG. He applied for the job when Pep was chosen. It went down to him and Pep.

He also said that he wanted to create a legacy at Chelsea in his 2nd stint. That he couldn't see himself ever leaving. That all changed when he reportedly wanted Stones and Pogba; and when he didn't get them bought for him he acted like a spoiled kid.

I hope he changes and we see him succeed long term at United. I'm just highly doubtful that he will and the club is crazy to take the risk based on his previous behaviour

Yep. Zlatan and the Special One at United. I'll heat up the popcorn.

They were together at Inter n got on pretty well

Yeah I'm not worried about them getting along with each other. Their usual antics will be entertaining enough.

Bayern's CEO said last week that they turned down a 100 mio Euro offer United made last year. It was never considered. Mueller has since extended his contract.
